We all know that wearing VHCP armor in combination with a VHDP helm gives half of both (so "somewhat crit padding and somewhat damage padding on the head).
We also know that padding over somewhat is randomized.
I sought to test whether the "halving" occurs before or after the randomization. If it occurred before, then there would be effectively no randomization because somewhat and down does not give randomization. E.g., the helmet would give a flat 6 points of damage padding
If the halving occurred after the randomization, then I should be able to see randomization, e.g., a range of 3-6 points of damage padding.
Avignon is a good candidate because he only has 2.86% redux according to ;redux.
Here is an example:
You swing a closed fist at Avignon!
AS: +337 vs DS: +87 with AvD: +4 + d100 roll: +50 = +304
... and hit for 7 points of damage!
Blow to the head causes Avignon's ears to ring!
Roundtime: 5 sec.
The rank 1 crit gave 5 bonus damage, which added to calculated damage from DF yields 13 total. Actual damage was 7, so the helmet provided 6 points on this hit.
Here are a couple more:
You swing a closed fist at Avignon!
AS: +337 vs DS: +87 with AvD: +4 + d100 roll: +93 = +347
... and hit for 8 points of damage!
Blow to the head causes Avignon's ears to ring!
Roundtime: 5 sec.
>
Avignon removes a rose-marrow potion from inside his white herb satchel, deftly sliding it out of the leather loop that secured it in place.
>
Avignon takes a drink from his rose-marrow potion.
Avignon's head looks better.
>ambush avignon head
You swing a closed fist at Avignon!
AS: +337 vs DS: +79 with AvD: +4 + d100 roll: +56 = +318
... and hit for 7 points of damage!
Blow to the head causes Avignon's ears to ring!
Roundtime: 5 sec.

You swing a closed fist at Avignon!
AS: +337 vs DS: +79 with AvD: +4 + d100 roll: +47 = +309
... and hit for 7 points of damage!
Blow to the head causes Avignon's ears to ring!
Roundtime: 5 sec.
I did this for a while, and I did not see less than 6 added, so I think the halving is before randomization
