I'm about to start a long evaluation project regarding a possible M&A. Anyone have any ideas for companies I could look at that are likely to fall in either category?
To make it easier, I'm trying to narrow my search to small to medium companies that are in only one or two lines of business.

Well, pretty large, but Blockbuster just failed to take over Hollywood Video.

Heh. Simutronics and Wizards of the Coast (or Peter Pan Peanut Butter). ;)

I'm looking for companies that haven't actually completed a M&A.
I was going to do Federated and May Company, but that's already gone through apparently.

Very quick look on Google got me this page. Maybe there's something there you could use. :)

Elevation Partners, a private equity firm which counts U2 rock star Bono among its partners, and SCi Entertainment, makers of the controversial "Carmageddon" games, have faced off in a bidding war for Eidos PLC, the maker of the "Tomb Raider" games.

Heh...should probably have clarified a little more...
It needs to not have happened, be in the process of happening, or be in the news about happening.

Oooh, purely theoretical, then? In that case, I'm all for Simutronics and Peter Pan Peanut Butter. :D

Just find an underperforming company that has a very small market share and use that.
Seattle Coffee or Barnies taken over by Starbucks.

good luck.
it's extremely difficult (and illegal if you're on the inside) to talkabout aquisitions beforehand.
Since we sold ourselves to Kohlberg, Kravis, and Roberts I have been involved in a LOT of due diligence (from both sides). We have bought and sold divisions like dime store candy for four years trying to get the owners back to even (they bought us at the height of the market in late 1999).
