for a hiding ambushing rogue how much ambush skill do you really need? how big of a difference is 1x vs 1.5x vs 2x for edged weapons when it comes to stance pushdown... to get them in offensive

These days you want 2x, if not for the pushdown, so you can access the new WAYLAY verb. It gives you the ability to strike from hiding with a great deal of damage weighting, and works better the smaller the weapon. Ideal for ambushing targets otherwise immune to crit death and greatly assists with attrition killing when necessary.

The bonus damage weighting is equal to the following (DEX bonus + (Ambush skill bonus / 2))

Waylay is a good tool and it can work with a crit weighted weapon. You would want to keep ambush above 1.75x at the least but if you need some of those points free there is a little leeway from being fully doubled.
