A cow, compared to a deer, is a filthy animal, and the conditions in which most beef cattle are raised are simply disgusting.

A deer is a wild animal which has survived on it's own long enough to ensure it being in well health.

Maybe it's just a Southern thing, but I'd rather have deer meat on the table any day, and that's not even bringing the moral values into the argument.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Arby's. They used to make a mean baked potato.

I hunt every year. For the past like 10 years I've been eating more deer meat then beef (since I have a lot of it.) It tastes good and cost's less too. I love the issue of how hunting is so cruel..... 1 shot to the heart, compared to slitting the throat of a cow and letting it bleed to death (among many other cruel deaths to cows.) I'll take deer meat over beef any day of the week.

I used to be an avid hunter when I was younger, but as time's progressed I haven't had the time to be actively into the sport.

Hopefully I'll be able to get some hunting done this year. The county I go to school in has a policy where you can shoot both sexes the full two weeks of the season.

Back in my old county, you could only shoot bucks unless it was on one of the specified three days.

Hunting rules. We should start a topic.

That is a new rule they started 2 years ago I think. At least that's the way it is in Pennsylvania. It use to be buck for 2 weeks and then 4 days of doe afterwards. However since the deer population is getting out of hand, they opened it up for both buck and doe the week after thanksgiving.

The rule here depends on what county you live in. Some have both sexes all season, and some have only males all season. It just all depends on population, I guess.

What kind of weapon do you use?

The last year I was in South Central New York state, I remember people having four doe tags and two buck tags because of the overpopulation. And this was a good many years ago.

For deer I use a 35 Marlin (and a pistol if I need it.) I archery hunt as well and use muzzleloader if I have the time too. My house has enough guns to support a small army so it really depends on my mood on which gun I want to use. MOST of the time for deer though (since I always go out after thanksgiving) I use a 35 marlin since that's my favorite gun....

Good for you for eating your deer meat, Sintik. I agree hunting isn't nearly as cruel as some other things that are done to animals... but I still love a good burger. But Elk Jerky is soooo good.

People who eat their kills are cool, people who are purely trophy hunters make me want to hurl. Same goes for people in helicopters and all that trash.

I'm too softhearted about the fuzzies, though, I prefer to fish.

I use a Marlin 30-30 lever-action my Dad bought for me for deer hunting. No scope, either.

For turkey hunting, I use my Dad's Remington 12GA pump, and for squirrels I use a Savage 22 magnum/20GA over and under.

No pistols yet, though. One of the first things I intend to do after I hit 21 is to get a CWP and a pistol to go with it.

I won't eat anything I can't kill myself.

That said, with a hammer, I could kill just about anything myself.

I've eaten a lot of game and I like it, but I'm too soft to pull the trigger myself, so I will gather and garden whilst other;s hunt, lately though I don't have anyone to trade with for venison or anything else :sniffle:

I hunt with a Hoyt Superslam composite bow and sometimes I'll take out my dad's PSE (not sure of the model) composite bow. I'm not big on using rifles or shotguns for killing. I'm kind of a purist though, I don't use anything to bring the deer in IE smashed apples, salt lick, deer cocaine or doe urine. I don't use a high hide or tree stand. I like to find the trails, set up camp and wait on the ground. Once I get a deer within 30 yards it's supper.

I know I couldn't kill it, they're just too damn pretty. But in Montana we're not limited to hunting just deer. There are also moose and elk, the occasional bear and I think I was reading in the paper last week that they're going to allow some bison hunting near Yellowstone Park due to overpopulation. (I think.) Out of all of the various wild game I think I prefer elk, it's a bit more tender and not as gamey tasting.

::HarmNone pales visibly::

You eat elf? Elves are not for eating!

HarmNone will not be eaten. You will pay with a stomach ache and eight years of constipation! :D

Heee. You changed the "elf" to "elk". I shall remove the curse. :D

It's hunting season here in Alaska, and gosh we got some weird hunters. First there is my girlfriends uncle-in-law; he's about 5'3" and 400 lbs. He calls up, wants us to give him a ride to go moose hunting. I'm like where do you need to go? He says I dunno, you seen any moose along the road anywhere? I'm like ugh, no way am I driving you around to look for moose from my car.

Another friend of mine went moose hunting last weekend; on the back of a four wheeler. I was like are you crazy? They'll hear you from a mile away and run. I was laughing so hard it was pathetic. He finally agreed with me that it was more a scenic ride than a hunting trip.

We got some real whackos up here in Alaska. LOL
