Eh. My personal favorite are the idiots that use rapper names for characters. Jaehood. Jayhova. Dazdilinger. They make me want to kick a puppy.

Yuckmouth.
:snickers:
I can't stand Jayhova! He's annoying and self-rightous too. I whispered that he should reroll and he told me I was trying to oppress black people or something. It was equal parts hilarious and stupid.

Isn't your main character an Adjective? I see Jayhova (whom I've never heard of actually) as more IG than Chivalrous. If anyone should be preaching for others to reroll, I don't think it should be you.
PS, I don't care that you are named Chivalrous, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

And because of opinions like that, there are great names like Stalin and Capone.

Yep, it's all my fault. Tell me, since you are the expert on names, what are some good ones?
Warriorbird

One that aren't based off rappers. One's that aren't based off modern references.
I think adjective based names are fine, because I can easily see adventurers picking up nicknames or going under pseudonyms. The stupid compound word/adjective names are explained away by the fact that the owners picked stupid names to begin with.
For the most part, these days, the policy is pretty lax about anything unless it's completely blatant.
I'd go through a WHO list but I'm not currently a subscriber.

See, I don't care about rappers or modern day people or Voldermort or Merlin or Arthur or Drizzdt. Those names seem ok to me, if I have no context to put em in.
Your all knowing ability to know every name and what famous person it's associated with would indeed make it hard to pick a name. Fortunately for me, I don't care.

I saw Chingy a while back and reported it. The GMs didn't know what I was talking about though. :(

It's fair enough, although tact has never been your selling point SHM.
That said I don't really like the name "Chivalrous" but he was rolled up eleven years ago and at the time I thought names like Blades, Simmers, Thorn, etc. were just top-notch. I have several other old names that are equally bad as Chivalrous, if not worse.
In game though Chivalrous does have a "real name" which his friends know him by and it's pretty clear Chivalrous is an appellation that was given to him when he was younger, as much he'll tell you if you ask him. He's not even a big fan of "Chivalrous". It's like a nickname he can't lose for some reason.
If I hadn't had him for so long I would reroll him, as it is, I like his history.
However, IMO Chivalrous is no where near as bad as someone named BiggieSmalls, Tupac or StevenTyler. The more reality based names get the harder it is to detach yourself from it. If we could totally remove ourselves from reality they wouldn't be a problem but I don't think anyone is capable of completely doing that. If I thought my character's name was disruptive rather than just stupid I'd reroll him.

Don't let having a bad name get you down.
My main character is a Warlock who's mother gave him the girliest name in history.
But at least it's IC and not LostprophetsRain , or something

Bah.. I can still give shit. I've had that character for a LONG ass time.. and was too lazy to reroll it. I only used him for rescues and healing and spells and carting shit around.
I also had a sorcerer by the name of Reper Cussion. I deleted that one. :)

I had a rogue named Felonie that I got to level 25-ish. Had another rogue named Larcenie that I just used as a locker.
Those were the only characters I had that weren't named after one of my cats.

I was thinking about doing a project for one of my classes on a list of gemstone names, but it didn't really work out so I'm doing something completely unrelated instead.
However I did get a chance to go over a list of 400 names and didn't see too many names that really stood out as being horrible.
For anyone interested in my counts:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 1
Lord of the Rings: 1
Names taken from inanimate objects/nouns: 9
Princess Bride: 1
Shakespeare: 2 (at least)
Classical literature: 2
Names of people/things spelled backwards: 3
Names with the prefix sky: 3
Names with the prefix dark: 2
Names that might be taken after one of the Gemstone gods: 1
Drizzdt like names: 1.
There were also a few names that I didn't know how to catagorise, like Godyva. Is that a character named after a chocolate company?
The rest...well there could have been names taken from books that I haven't read yet. I certainly haven't read all of shakespeare so there could have been more from that catagory. I wasn't about to go through and decide who was original and who wasn't, since that would have been pointless.
So the fact that I haven't read every single book ever written and therefore can't recognise all character names, and that 9/400 isn't really statistically significant I decided to do my project on something different.
Personally, I don't see a problem with naming your character after another character, but if that is the case, as long as the character doesn't make blatant references to out of gemstone things...People in the real world are named after other people all the time. I was named after an aunt. My friend Eleanor was named after a Beatles song.

Well, the chocolate company is named after a historical figure (Lady Godiva) who rode naked through the town of Coventry in England.
The legend is that her husband (the Earl) was taxing the people oppressively and that Godiva pleaded with him to reduce the taxes. Knowing how prudish she was, he said that he'd reduce taxes if she would ride naked through the streets, which she did. The only person to spy on her as she did so was the famous "Peeping Tom".

I have an empath named Somewon who was my very first character in Gemstone and well i never have had the heart to delete him after all the years ive had him.
