Just curious is all.
I've been trotting along my dwarf warmage and playing him more lately. He's level 34 and is maxed out on spell levels that I will be training him in (he's got a fun backstory I created and his training reflects this and his limited spell knowledge).
Here's his current skills:
(at level 34), your current skill bonuses and ranks (including all modifiers) are:

At 29 EL:A ranks, he gets his swing RT down to 1 second with 506 running and swinging his 6x falchion.
I plan on just focusing EL:E at this point....maybe tossing a few ranks into Air eventually to hit the next bonus point for 911 and another open disk spot.
Only wielding a 4x shield right now - will work on getting one to 7x eventually, then hopefully to T5 for the extra CvA against spells
A few enhancives to help boost his OHE ranks up a bit, plus the use of EVOKE 902 and COL his current AS is 278.
If needed I can utilize the self cast tremors and even call wind - should I want to chance the spell hindrance (at it's max low of 7%).
He's currently wearing some Cuirbouilli Leather equivalent (some 4x, SWCP leather breastplate and some DCP arm greaves).
I had him learn up to 913 for the added benefit of a spell you're hard pressed to find outside of knowing it and 520 so he could get the base use of Mage Armor.
He can easily obtain elementals from others. The only real downside I see with him is as he progresses higher in level that his AS will be behind a bit due to the lack of 425 and his DS/TD will lack some because of not knowing 430. I can offset some of the lack of TD with ensorcell on his armor and shield, so I'm not too worried about that.
With disarm having changed some so you don't outright lose your weapon if you can't steal it back from a creature, I'm not horribly concerned about dumping his CMAN points into disarm. I'll probably focus on Cunning Defense first, then I'll gauge how well my DS is - if rubbing a small statue won't be enough, I may snag up a few ranks of Combat Movement for a few extra points of DS and then work on getting Feint up to rank 3.

[redux: Redux points: 791.0] (this was at 688 last level, though I'm not sure where this number needs to be before you actually hit redux)

In the end (capped, if I get him that far) I plan on having him in brig (sure, he'll have 20some% spell hindrance, but he won't be a big caster of any sorts so it shouldn't really matter) or an equivalent of leather breastplate with accessories. The only big difference between leather breastplate and brig would be the brig would offer 3 extra points on the CvA.
Anyone have any thoughts, comments or suggestions?

Well, without 425, and the subsequent AS bonuses you get from training MnE as a warmage, you're going to have to stay under-hunting by around 10 levels to even hit anything for much longer...
Also, 919 is mostly required for a warmage later in the game since they have to stay in offensive with lowered DS and limited protection compared to sturdier professions.
I don't know if you'll do well with anything less than 25-30 ranks in MnE (never underestimate 430), 35 ranks (haste is absolutely vital for surviving in RT locking situations) in MjE, and 19 ranks in Wiz. It will also suck to not have 550 to break free from stuns and status effects, but that isn't as big a deal as 425 or 919.

Minimum points required for redux is approximately 1060 + (2000/level). At level 34 this equates to ~1119 points. The points threshold decreases with higher levels. For a level 100 character the threshold is ~1080 points. Also, the fact that you have spell training does not affect this number. Spell ranks reduce the redux % only. If the test instance is open and you have access, you should be able to verify the number of points required.

Slowly making my way there.
This is where I was moments ago:

[redux: Primary skills: 39]
[redux: Secondary skils: 96]
[redux: Tertiary skills: 39]

Here is where I'm at for level 39:

[redux: Primary skills: 40]
[redux: Secondary skils: 99]
[redux: Tertiary skills: 40]
[redux: Redux points: 916.0]

I figure in about 5 (maybe 6) levels he'll finally have his redux! So far the journey has been pretty easy with his training, I'm just curious as to how far it'll take him since he won't be training up any further in spells.

I don't have redux yet, but the 5 ranks of crit padding from 520 do help me out in my leather breastplate (that I really should get padded, too).
A flashy vesperti swings a spiked flail at you!
AS: +292 vs DS: +234 with AvD: +46 + d100 roll: +97 = +201
... and hits for 55 points of damage!
Strike pierces gall bladder!
That's gotta hurt!
You are stunned for 3 rounds!
A flashy vesperti swings a spiked flail at you!
The energy surrounding you condenses into hard stone, softening the blow!
AS: +292 vs DS: +215 with AvD: +46 + d100 roll: +14 = +137
... and hits for 22 points of damage!
Torn muscle in your left leg!
I wanted to get my revenge on it, but the stupid "flashy" cheap shit gives the creature the ability to magically lash out while "consuming" nearby energy....so you can get dispelled and injured all at the same time!
A flashy vesperti throws back his head and shrieks!
A swirling burst of essence lashes out from a flashy vesperti, consuming nearby magical energy!
A luminescent aura fades from around you.
The hazy film around you fluxes chaotically!
... 8 points of damage!
Plasma scorches a hole in your shield arm!
You are stunned for 1 round!
The hazy film fades from around you.
A swirling burst of essence lashes out from a flashy vesperti, consuming nearby magical energy!
The deep blue glow leaves you.
You are coated in a hazy film.
I fucking hate those stupid mini-bosses.

At your current training rate (25 pts. per level) you will ascend from purgatory into the promised land at level 47. You'll need approximately 1107 pts. at that level to expunge the dreaded "Current skills bonus is insufficient to gain DF reduction", messaging. You would have redux at level 45 if you were fully trained in the three secondary skills,

This is an awesome project but I can't see how you get around the lack of 425 AS much past the mid levels or so. As it stands, a melee warmage needs a gang of enhancives to remain viable swinging at cap, and that's with 425 maxed out. Good luck!

I'm having fun - the only thing that's been pissing me off so far are those stupid ass 'mini-boss' creatures. Most can be avoided without penalty, but a few of them have stupid fucking cheap mechanics; such as dispelling and causing damage at the same time or that SMRv2 based stun they do. You can't even try to run by them without fear of getting tagged by these cheap mechanics.
He does use a few enchancives and with the use of 509 and 902 on top of a 5x weapon he mainly uses, his AS is 293. I could get it to 303 if I switched to a 7x weapon, but I haven't felt the need for it yet.
It's been an entertaining experience learning to how to hunt with a crippled build. I don't have access to the spells I'm used to with my other wizards and I don't have the CMAN/Shield abilities like my paladin and rogue get.

I'd like to think that the help of redux could make running bandits a bit easier. They have a tendency to put me into short stuns or a small stack of RT and then plink away at me right now.
Here's what a normal bandit encounter generally looks like for me:

Then I go on to STOMP to keep them controlled best as possible, it may not generate RT for them, but it keeps them from wanting to hide on me again. Then I just focus on swinging and beat the crap out of them.
With 520 active getting and STUNNED I hit the Masterfully crit padded range, which helps keep some of the more serious hits under control some. I should probably look into adding some damage padding to my armor since I get free 5 points of crit padding with 520 active.

Seems like a lot of lore but whatever works lol
I’d 1x perception tho
EL:A is to get any 5 second OHE swing down to 1 second with 506 with him. Right now a scimitar (5x w/ air flares) and a falchion (5x w/ earth flares) he can swing at 1 second. I use a 7x/T1, lightning flaring short sword against squishy targets (scale armor and down). I use the scimitar against creatures with immunity to stun or have some kind of natural padding - the air flares can knock down consistently on lower flares and it has a better DF than the short sword. I use the falchion against heavier armor targets.
EL:E this helps boost 509 and 502 bonus. This one is a must for a warmage to help give them a better than just +1.5 to AS every level past 40 ranks of their weapon skill.
I did 2x in lores right away to get his Air up high enough and also get a jump on his Earth lore to help out. I've since dropped to only doing 1x every training in EL:E.
At 51 EL:E he gets an extra +5 to his Weapon Ranks bonus (over the initial 10 that spell 902 gives) and he gets an extra +7 to his AS from the Strength spell. +12 AS might not seem like much, but every bit helps when you're limited with what spells you have in your arsenal.
I didn't start perception right away, precious TPs and all at the start. I'm working on keeping that a skill I always train in from here on out. With Perception and CM both at 24 ranks, they're a combined 48 ranks and that is just over 1x to go towards SMRv2 defense. Most pures don't do more than 1x PF (which I do) and 1x Perception pre-cap. In terms of SMRv2 defense, I'm right on par with them.

I just level to 45 and checked into the local inn. Upon leaving this was the only messaging I saw:
Leaving your room, you check back out of the Solhaven Inn, wander over to the front desk and hand the room key back to the innkeeper. He nods and thanks you for your patronage.
I've hit my goal!

It's been a bit of a challenge as of late hunting him, but I've been doing pretty good against Shan. I try to avoid warriors because usually it goes like this:
Disarm - stuck in some RT with no weapon out.
Tackle - stuck in more RT and on the ground.
Lay there until the RT clears and hope nothing else comes around while I'm down.
Clerics/Rangers/Wizards - as long as they haven't prepped a spell, I just STOMP and they fall over and I wait for them to stand up (they stance to offensive when standing) then I STOMP again and kill them all.
I've got 2 ranks in Disarm, Feint and Cunning Defense now. Hopefully that'll help reduce some of the disarm fun the shan warriors have been having with me.

Seems a warrior didn't take a liking to me killing it's ranger friend.....
A shan warrior bares his teeth and barks ferociously!
A shan warrior swings a gleaming silver flamberge at you!
AS: +341 vs DS: +282 with AvD: +46 + d100 roll: +95 = +200
... and hits for 69 points of damage!
Whoosh! Several ribs driven into your lungs.
You are stunned for 5 rounds!
At least he didn't boost his AS again while I was stunned. Also took a leg minor and then ran away when the stun wore off. Let us not forget that 520 helped here too, gives me a base +5 crit padding when not stunned.

Have you considered going the DS route? I have a similarly leveled warmage that didn't have any issue with the warriors (but did get spiked a few times by rangers). I have 20 ranks CM, 1x in THW, 2x in spells up to 520, 930, and 46 in mne. wearing doubles. Enjoying it greatly

He's at his max number of spells he'll ever train in. Up to 913 and 520.
His DS in defensive is over 400, that was his offensive DS he got tagged with that hit. I didn't have a small statue active, so that would have helped a bit. Usually he doesn't get hit that hard, just one of those rarity shots that happened.
He currently uses cuirbouilli leather armor and his spell hindrance is only 7%. Since he doesn't require the constant use of spells, 7% doesn't fell like it's a penalty for him. Only spell he has to constantly try to keep using is 506. My next goal is to get him fully trained to use studded leather at the lowest spell hindrance at 70 AU ranks.

Now sitting at level 46 and having my redux, morbid curiosity left me wondering if I could run the DR Arena with this guy. Last time I tried the Arena was 2 or so years ago with my level 46 rogue and he just got his ass handed to him and only made it to the second champion before time ran out. Without having to watch for traps and the fact I can swing like a mad man, it only took about 7.5 minutes.
I feel kind of bad that it felt like I was just kind of strolling through the park. Sure, I took a few shots, but overall it was pretty simple.
Keep up 506, those that turtled I'd just STOMP with 909 self cast and swing like mad. A few monsters shook stuns off and the champs didn't stun of course, but overall it was pretty easy. Here are a couple of hits I took from the last champ:
In an awe inspiring display of combat mastery, an imposing minotaur champion engages you in a furious dance macabre, spiralling into a blur of strikes and ripostes!
An imposing minotaur champion swings a broadsword at you!
AS: +338 vs DS: +263 with AvD: +34 + d100 roll: +83 = +192
... and hits for 24 points of damage!
Jarring blow to your back.
An imposing minotaur champion swings a broadsword at you!
AS: +338 vs DS: +263 with AvD: +34 + d100 roll: +89 = +198
... and hits for 24 points of damage!
Broken finger on your left hand!
An imposing minotaur champion belts out a guttural battle cry!
An imposing minotaur champion swings a broadsword at you!
AS: +344 vs DS: +277 with AvD: +34 + d100 roll: +68 = +169
... and hits for 22 points of damage!
Slash to your left leg hits high!
Kinda makes your knees weak, huh?
Kind of fun having a bit of redux and the ability to spam 506 and swing like hell. Now that I'm a couple levels over shan, they're pretty easy. Warriors still disarm me with a 65+ roll, but other than that, I handle them pretty good with this warmage.

Your redux reduced the broadsword's damage factor from .250 to .240 and the redux factor (RF) range calculated from these attacks is: MIN .040 (4.0%) to MAX .043 (4.3%). In both attack 1 (ER 192) and attack 2 (ER 198) the total damage was reduced from 26 to 24. In the third attack (ER 169) the actual and calculated damage were both 22, therefore no reduction in damage taken.
If the redux factor was lower than .040 then the actual damage (24) in the 2nd attack would have only been reduced to 25. If the redux factor was higher then .043 then the actual damage (22) in third attack would have been reduced to 21.

Question for you....since I don't dive into the DF damage calculation like others do.
He's wearing scale (cuirbouilli armor, which you probably already know).
He's got +5 crit padding from 520 running. Also, his arm greaves give +7 extra crit padding on the arms (since 520 is supposed to stack and his armor doesn't have any padding, his arms should, in theory, have +12 crit padding).
Curious to know if that changes things at all in your calculations?

You should get 919 eventually. That will make up for your lack of DS from 430 and such. Also, you seem to be over-training in lores which doesn't seem to be a good plan. Those points should be getting you to 1x in CMAN instead. Not sure why so much earth lore this early on.

Critical padding and/or weighting do not affect redux calculations. Damage padding and weighting, however, will distort the results.
The redux factor range that I calculated for your character includes the spell penalty. Without spells this character's RF would be approximately .055 (5.5%). This is a ballpark figure since I only have a rough estimate on the spell penalty effect.
Can you post the number of redux points this character had at the time of these attacks? Thanks!

I haven't trained in lores in the past two levels, they're on hold. Any extra points are going to CMAN (first) and perception (second).
The idea of building up redux with him is to see if the offset of spells that he lacks, will pay off or balance out as he gets higher in level. Then again, I built a story around him that I like and this will be who he is, limited in spells and sporting redux for a wizard.
Shan were a pain in the ass the first level or so I hunted them (when he was level 44). Learning how to control the swarms and what tactics work best took a bit of trial and error. He's very viable at hunting right now. He doesn't have access to 400s, so he can't utilize ewave and 912 can work, but only sees about a 66% success rate at knocking down shan when he uses it.
I've learned to utilize STOMP with 909 when a ranger enters the room - I hate getting thorned by them. Usually it puts their DS around 240 and if I get a high enough endroll or a good flare, the ranger will be stunned and that's the end of him. If I don't get a stun and he stands, he goes into offensive to stand and his standing DS is usually around 230 and I make short work of him.
Clerics and Wizards - I can generally get good results from using cman feint on them and I can hit them most of the time without any other actions. If their DS is too high, STOMP fixes that. I don't have to worry about their CS based spells, his TD is high enough to defend from them.
Warriors, their armor usually means the DF from my shortsword won't give me a direct stun unless I hit the eye or neck with a hard enough swing. The lightning flares are pretty good at stunning them. I just need to work on keeping them down if I really want to take them on to keep from getting tackled or disarmed.
In the end, the only thing that really concerns me is the lack of TD due to not having 430. I can make up for some of it if I were to get his shield to T5 (only at T2 right now) and his final armor he'll be using (some sort of studded leather) to T5. His current armor is only T3 (or T2.....I can't remember without checking). He can gain a little more TD and for his current hunting range, it's enough to keep him out of harms way, for now.

Combat Maneuver training is as follows:
Skill name - - - - - - - Ranks
Disarm Weapon - - - - - 2
Feint - - - - - - - - - - - - 3
Cunning Defense - - - - 2
Once I get CM to a full 1x (hopefully by level 60) I can start pushing up lores some and training more in climbing and push perception higher. Training that second rank of CM is really eating up the TPs right now.
With my perfect 7x/T1, zorchar shortsword, COL and enhancives I get my AS to 336. If I was really bored I could take the weapon to 9x.....but I think I'll keep my pots for a more efficient weapon. The shortsword is decent for what it can do, but I'm working on getting a perfect gornar falchion up to 7x (under the old enchant....probably only get it to 6x before the old system is pulled, but both my enchanting wizards will have maxed essence stored to take it to 7x on the new system).
So far it's been pretty fun. Certainly a challenge to find creatures to hunt as time goes on and he gets higher in levels. I don't take as much fun in hunting bandits as I did when he was around level 30-40, the stupid traps you walk into can be horribly debilitating. Not to mention the fact that sure, he's nearly 1x in CM and has the small bonus from Cunning Defense, the subdues, groin kicks and such leave him with such a long stun duration or RT that he gets plinked away at to near death and it's not any fun to constantly run away to heal up, head back out, run away to heal up, head back out..... Too bad self cast 909 doesn't knock bandits from hiding.....

I probably would have gone with shield + UAC combination here for efficiency and to overcome the AS issues that not having 425 is going to cause. Having low UAF isn't so bad, and you can't get disarmed. It's holding a shield that would lower your damage output and chance to hit by dramatically messing with your MM. However, I think it might still out-perform OHE.
Also, it would reduce your lore requirements to get 1s RT with 506 so you could easily have 1x in CMAN by this point. You're currently way over-trained in lores, which is really costing a lot of TPs that could go to improving your physical skills.

He needs 29 ranks of air lore to get a 5 second OHE weapon to 1 second RT. At least that's what he needed 14-15 levels back, not sure if it changed much with a few stat point increases since then. Right now, swinging a short sword (4 second weapon) means I can be encumbered a bit and still maintain that 1 second RT if I'm not ready to head in yet.
I haven't trained him in lores for the past maybe 8 levels now, they've been stagnant. I let all my spare TPs filter into picking up an extra CM rank each level.
One thing I do wish I changed in my training path was getting CMAN FEINT up to rank 3 sooner. I should have taken feint to rank 3 first, but I only just picked it up rank 3 at level 49. It's pretty handy CMAN for a warmage, most targets I go against I can force out of defensive stance using feint with decent success at rank 3 and cut them down in a few seconds.
I know there's a free fixskill coming up in a month, I may think about addressing some skills by that time. Right now he's very viable for hunting, granted I'm under hunting by a few levels. It just takes some time to figure out new hunting grounds with him since he's a bit limited when compared to other warmages that haven't skimped out of spell training or a warrior/rogue that has access to a slew of more CMANs and/or guild skills. So getting to know when to defend from a new creature's attacks or when to put them prone with 909 or when to time your feint is a new learning process, even on creatures I may have hunted many, many times before with other professions.
I'd love for specialized shield skills to be made universal for all classes. Not all of the shield skills, but some of the more basic ones. I'd love to have use of SHIELD BASH with my wizard. Start off with a Feint, followed with a SHIELD BASH and then beat the piss out of the creature with my weapon.
I hope the ASCENSION skill system will help me in my efforts to build a better version of this warmage I'm working on. I know a few possible ideas suggested in the list the GM posted would certainly be beneficial for him. I guess we wait and see what kind of skills/abilities come out for that system.

I jumped into the test server and pumped up his levels a bit to see if he's still viable. I found I can manage the black forest without any difficulty as long as I keep the creatures to no more than 2 to a room and I can keep them down. Anyway.

Here are a couple of hits that I decided to take to see what the end results would be. He's still wearing just his cuirbouilli armor. I let an ogre smack me a few times with its mace, here are the results:
A black forest ogre swings a rust-covered dhara at you!
AS: +374 vs DS: +273 with AvD: +33 + d100 roll: +100 = +234
... and hits for 32 points of damage!
Mighty blow cracks several of your ribs.
The impact of the ogre's blow rattles teeth and brain and sends you flying south!
(resulted in a minor chest wound)
A black forest ogre throws a rust-covered dhara at you!
AS: +324 vs DS: +216 with AvD: +33 + d100 roll: +69 = +210
... and hits for 24 points of damage!
Stomach shot lands with a hollow *thump*.
The rust-covered dhara flies past you, disappearing into the local environs.
(resulted in a stomach minor)
A black forest ogre swings a rust-covered dhara at you!
AS: +324 vs DS: +234 with AvD: +33 + d100 roll: +89 = +212
... and hits for 28 points of damage!
Smash to the kneecap.

So, guys think it's still going good with him? Looks like I can still have some good times over the next 10 levels at least.

I'm dropping some EL:E. Losing 20 ranks will result in a loss of 2 weapon rank bonus from spell 902 and 3 strength bonus from spell 509. Loss of 5 AS.
I'm moving his CM up to full 1x, so those extra 7 ranks of CM should give him +3 to his AS. This shift will put an extra 28 points into this Redux to get a slightly better result over what he has now. It won't be much, but every extra bit helps.
Overall, his AS should only drop by 2 points, which isn't a big deal.
I'm putting some more into his swimming ranks and I will be going 1x from here on out in climbing and swimming until they reach 50 and 60 ranks, respectfully. I want to be able to swim into Nelemar or climb to minos without issues by the time I get to those levels.
I'm going to work on bringing EL:A to 46 ranks as soon as possible - this will give a few extra bonus points for Dodging from 911, a couple extra disk spots and hopefully let him swing any 5 second base OHE at 1 second even when he becomes encumbered some. He can swing any 5 second OHE at 1 second right now, but as soon as he gets slightly encumbered he swings them at 2 seconds - I'm looking to remedy that with some extra EL:A ranks. Once I hit 46 EL:A ranks I'll shift strictly to EL:E.
I also plan on starting to train in MIU starting his next level and will take it 1x from here on out to help offset some spell burst that comes into play at higher hunting grounds. He needs to be able to have 401/406/414/101/107 from outside help to keep him protected as much as possible. Without them he becomes a punching bag, especially to any CS based spells tossed at him.
If by some chance I can get him up to that level 80ish range, when extra TPs become available, he'll be starting to train in Brawling - so if he gets disarmed he'll retain a little extra DS and it'll aid in his redux.
Depending on what can be done with the Ascension skills that are coming out - I may end up altering his training again in the near future, but for now, this is my current plan.

Shifted my skills a bit with the annual fixskill. I put CM to 1x and dropped my EL:E by 20 ranks and made a few other minor shifts in a couple of skills. I'm also thinking about dropping HP down to .5x here on out. Right now at 160 mana I rarely drop under 90 while out hunting and I can't fathom needing 300 mana or so when (if) he caps because he doesn't cast spells much, just ones to keep hunting (902, 506 and 909).

I'd stick with the 1x HP assuming you have 919, as you'll eventually start needing 919 to stay in offensive as a warmage in many hunting grounds.

I'd stick with the 1x HP assuming you have 919, as you'll eventually start needing 919 to stay in offensive as a warmage in many hunting grounds.
Won't have that spell, he's capped with spells he'll ever learn (MjE at 520 and Wiz at 913). Which is why I don't see a need for 300+ mana.
I don't want to cut it out completely because moving up in higher AsG means higher spell hindrance, which means I will probably fail casts more frequently. Right now his 7% hindrance isn't really an issue for him, sometimes I might get a couple of failed casts in a row, but surprisingly I don't see hindrance failures all that often.
I'm really hoping the Ascension skills will provide an exciting set of skills that I can train in to help boost his redux and hopefully allow him to wear chain mail with some sort of tolerable spell hindrance I can live with.
By the time I hit cap - if possible - I should be able to patch together a few Armor Use enchancives + some extra ranks of AU through Ascension to get his AU skill to 130 so he can wear brig with the best 12% hindrance.
Then I'll try out chain mail if they still plan on releasing an Ascension skill that reduces hindrance penalty, I'll be looking to train that. Then if I can find a paladin that's trained up Armor Fluidity to 4 or 5 ranks on top of it, chain mail might be very viable for my mage at cap. Right now I'm kind of playing the waiting game to how things progress as I keep working on leveling him up.

Got knocked on my ass and took a pretty good hit, only received a minor. No stuns
A greater faeroth tries to bite you!
AS: +332 vs DS: +230 with AvD: +28 + d100 roll: +73 = +203
... and hits for 41 points of damage!
Nice puncture to the back, just grazed the spine!
I never really noticed how much bites hurt before - like getting hit with a two-handed bastard sword or two-handed trident in scale armor.
I'm reluctant to really push further in levels until Ascension skills come out - I want to see what they offer and what it takes to train in the skills. This was my first hunt since I last leveled a week ago and it went pretty normal - took a couple of hits, just minors.

I haven't done much with him lately, still level 54. But I decided to drag him out to the arena in DR again to see how it goes.
Only lost once out of the 15 matches because my connection hung....everything snapped back after about 30 seconds and a champ had me prone and down to 12 health. I couldn't cast anymore so I had to surrender.
Only change is I moved from my 7x/T1 SWDW short-sword with lightning flares to my 6x/T2 FCW falchion with earth flares. I miss the outrageously high lightning flares that hit at times, but the extra weighting and DF from the falchion seems to cleave through the targets better.
Only creatures giving me troubles are the champs with padding and high DS and the few creatures that might spawn with a ranged weapon and their offensive DS is around 340. That matches my AS range, so it takes a bit to STOMP and whittle them down. Most runs take him about 7 minutes.
It's kind of dull. I don't know how folks do this over and over again.

If I can get my redux warmage to cap - I don't see any issues with him being viable. Playing around on the test server to see what kind of hindrance he'd have with ATPs dumped into AU ranks.

Using his 6x/T2 SWC falchion and his current set of enhancives and COL, his AS is 421.
His DS will be higher. He's not using a small statue at the moment and at the minimum I'd have the armor at 7x/T3, so he's missing out on 60 DS and an extra -6 to CvA (from T3 ensorcell) + another -7 CvA for having enchanted armor over non-enchanted.
Using chain mail with 130 AU ranks (this many ranks is required to get brig down to lowest hindrance of 12%), chain mail has a 45% hindrance. Even when I wear a couple of enhancives that adds +7 to AU and max out ATP AU ranks, he ends up with 158 ranks. The chain mail hindrance never budges from 45%. Without having an full set of AU enahncives (that aren't armor accessories) I don't know if the hindrance will budge from 45% until much closer to the needed 230 AU ranks to achieve 16%. At best, if I found a paladin with 5 ranks of armor fluidity that would only knock off 50% of the base hindrance (which is 8%) and I could get his hindrance down to 37%.
I decided to run out quick to OTF and see what came of things. I don't know what his redux is at (;redux doesn't give a proper return on the test server), but he took a couple of decent shots with only receiving minors.

Maybe a 45% hindrance won't be a big issue for him. Out of the 10 minutes or so I hunted him, I only came across 5 or 6 spell failures out of all the casts. Here's hoping an Elite Ascension skill reduces spell hindrance and it might just be viable to keep him in chain mail.

Still not sure why you wouldn't just do the +6 ranks in wizard, so you can have 919 going full time. Also, 2x in EMC so you can have 515 going and then those spell failures won't be so dramatic.

The skill shortfall penalty to spell hindrance is .05 per skill point. Add this penalty to 1 and then multiply the base hindrance by this result.
Example: 16% base hindrance
Skill required to reduce a spell's hindrance to 16% is: ((16 * 20) -10)) = 310 skill (210) ranks
At 300 (200 ranks) skill the multiplier is 1 + (.05 * 10) = 1.5 where 10 is the skill shortfall. This yields a spell hindrance penalty of 16% * 1.5 = 24%
At 290 (190 ranks) skill the multiplier is 1 + (.05 * 20) = 2 where 20 is the skill shortfall. This yields a spell hindrance penalty of 16% * 2 + 32%
At 280 (180 ranks) skill the multiplier is 1 + (.05 * 30) = 2.5 where 30 is the skill shortfall. This yields a spell hindrance penalty of 16% * 2.5 = 40%
This .05 per skill shortfall penalty applies across the board as do the multipliers. Whenever you are 10 skill short of the base hindrance skill requirement the effective spell hindrance will be 1.5 * base hindrance. The hindrance penalty with a 20 skill shortfall is (base hindrance * 2) etc.
Example: 10% base hindrance
Skill required to achieve 10% base hindrance: ((10 * 20) - 10)) = 190 (90 ranks)
At 180 skill the hindrance penalty will be 1.5 * 10 = 15%
At 170 skill the hindrance penalty will be 2 * 10 = 20%
etc.
This demonstrates how a relatively small skill shortfall can result in a very substantial hindrance penalty. Of course there are maximum hindrance caps for each armor.
This is the formula posted on the wiki: Total Hindrance = Base Hindrance * (1 + (Required Bonus - Current Bonus) / 20).

I've officially moved into my Studded Leather (yeah!). Got some good enhancive properties on it to boost my OHE and PF along with 5 CER of damage padding.
7x/T2/SWCW falchion with all my enhancives and COL active gets his AS to 357 so he doesn't have any issues hitting anything he hunts.
With all his enhancives on, if they do indeed help his redux, he's sitting at:

He's up hunting right now, out kicking the crap out of vipers, ogres and boars in the blighted forest.
Only thing I need to finally decide as I slowly creep closer to capped range (which is a ways off) is if I bite the bullet and accept the fact that he'll probably need to be wearing chain mail and suffer through the 40%+ spell hindrance or work on making a quality set of brig and have a much nicer hindrance of 12% once he can get his AU ranks to 130.

With my new level and the 1 ATP I just earned that I put into Physical Fitness, without any enhancives I'm close to 10% redux.
Only irritation I really run into right now is the stupid ass black ogres that dispel. I might change over from casting Earth 520 to Water 520 to see if that helps much....the spells that always seem to get dispelled are 913, 911 or 401. While 913 and 911 only cost me mana to recast, if my elementals get dispelled I have to go back in and find someone to recast them for me. I guess that's the plight of not knowing any 400s as for this reduxmage.

No, never tried it. No paladin on the test server for me to utilize and I've never tried it in the normal instance of the game....
Then again, I suppose I could utilize the test server and roll up a couple of characters - one being a paladin and just make use of LEVELUP verb to reach the necessary skills/ranks and test things out.....that just sounds like extra work and I'm too lazy right now to try it.

His studded leather has 4 CER of damage padding and 2 CER of crit padding. He's still running around the blighted forest from time to time and holds his own well.
Ascension points so far are applied here and his current exp is split 45/55 (regular and ascension):
Skill name ----- Mnemonic ----- Ranks
----------------------------------------------------
Armor Use ----- armoruse ----- 5
Edged Weapons ----- edgedweapons ----- 1
Physical Fitness ----- physicalfitness ----- 2
Right now the only real downside for him is the DS pushdown when there are multiple creatures in the room. His offensive DS of 310 or so drops rapidly into the mid 200s when 3 or 4 creatures are in the room. I might need to contemplate getting his MOC up to at least 10 ranks to help negate some of that FoF....but that sounds like a lot of work for a mage with the cost being 15/10 for TPs or spending a total of 15 ATPs to get MOC up to 10 ranks (that's 750,000 ascension exp).
I'm still pissed with the whole adjustment to SMRv2 defense getting adjusted down. He went from only having about a 15% chance (outside of an open roll) for a viper to hit him with spit to having a nearly 40% chance to getting hit with viper spit. I used to hunt the vipers as part of the hunting routine - go through, kill about a dozen creatures to fill his mind and go rest. Now I avoid 1/3 of the creatures and it can take a bit longer to finish a hunt. The viper spit itself isn't the main issue, it's when a few of them spit and hit him at the same time the poison stacks hard and it also reduces your AS/DS for an awful long duration of 1-2 minutes. It pretty much ends a hunt. After a few hunts like this it just deters me from playing him and he sits unplayed for a week or two until I want to try again....then only to be reminded after a few hunts of the SMRv2 low defense changes that make viper spit overly irritating so I pack him away for a week or two and repeat things again and again. I guess that's the real reason why I haven't been playing him much.

I don't know about that, with boss/pack mobs you end up with 4-5 wraiths in a room pretty often and that will be a problem for their DS without MOC.

I use 1202 and with 140 transformation lore (postcap) can get AsG 13. If we are talking about reducing the damage based on training this could be an alternative way of training "redux" as a wizard. Using robes as a metric and a claw attack returns a 22% reduction in DF.

To my knowledge, 1202 doesn't help with CvA, though (if this isn't the case, please correct me). I thought about this route since I have an (I forget what they're called, not a mage rechargeable but an item that can hold a lot of charges) that has 1202 and can take up to 800some charges before it goes bad. But after reading up on 1202, you only gain the benefit of AsG and not CvA.
My reduxmage doesn't have the benefit of 425 or 430, and never will, so his DS will be a bit low - but that can be overcome without much of an issue. His TD on the other hand is going to be low and that's where the lower CvA from having a higher AsG comes in handy. He's in enchanted studded leather and that's got a CvA of 3, plus with having a T2 ensorcell on it (might be 3, I can't remember without checking) and a shield that also has a T2 (could be T3), his CvA is -7.
Unfortunately he needs the help of a lower CvA to help offset the loss of TD from spell 430.
I'll eventually get him into brig and possibly chainmail (this is a post cap goal) as time goes on, but it also depends on what the second and third levels of ascension bring to the table.
Fair point. The goal is to mitigate the weakness inherent in the class, which in the case of a wizard (pure) is the glass cannon effect. This is a lot easier done today than it was years ago as the gear floor has come up so much. Average wizard is now wearing at 5 CER crit padded armor with Mage armor and has HCP at minimum. Extra padding through skill (520) and WPS are also easily obtained.
I guess the bottom line is a wizard weakness is not in their TD or honestly getting hit, it is surviving getting hit which there are ways to avoid. In my opinion the 1202 route is the best one for a wizard as it has a lot of PROs and the biggest CON is finding a sustainable way to cast the spell.

The DR Arena is stupid easy with this guy. I don't know why I didn't think of it last year when I ran the arena, but even without any Ambush training he can aim pretty good being fully 1x in CM and using his falchion. I just aim for the head (can't hit 3 or 4 types of creatures as they're too tall for this dwarf), so I take a leg out and then go for the head.
For the more annoying champions that have high DS and since they can't be stunned, I keep them stuck in RT with feint. STOMP with 909, CMAN FEINT, swing at the head a few times (maybe I'll get a lucky crit kill), if it's not dead then I CMAN FEINT, swing a few times, feint, swing a few times and keep repeating until the target is dead.
I was doing runs at 160-180 seconds this year. Last year my fastest run was 196, it's now 160 this year.
Only thing I find impressive about the DR Arena is how easy it is and how you can build up exp fast, sitting on 70K+ in long-term exp that I've built up over the past 12-14 months from hunting and from the arena runs.
Also, I dumped a couple more ranks in PF through Ascension and pushed his redux up a little and it now sits at 13.51%, up from 13.23%.
