I dont know why it was studied.

It has been known "forever" in electronics.

That is why there is never a complete picture on your TV screen.

Your mind fills in the missing part based on what is on the screen shown by the pixels.

I'm a fan of staring at a TV long enough to see the RGB display.

It can be used to great effect in tv. Like the countless number of people who thought they "saw" Lucille Ball naked, for example.
