View Full Version : Official: Maintenance Work on ALL Servers 6/18/19 10:30 AM - 3 PM ET

Our co-lo, where the Simutronics servers are located, needs to do some work on the electrical line leading to our area. We will need to shut down all of the servers while they do their work starting at 10:30 AM ET. We will do additional preventative server maintenance during the outage. This should take 4-5 hours. We anticipate restarting around 3 PM ET.

This means everything will be closed: games, website, forums, wiki, store.

Anytime you shut down a computer that has been running for years without a restart, there is a chance that it will not restart properly. If that happens, the affected server will be slower restarting than the rest while we work on it. We will update you if that occurs and delays any of the key parts returning to service.

"Due to player demand for more realism, and in order to preserve the realism of a new beginning after the server restart, we have stripped all players of all belongings and wiped out all bank accounts and made everyone level 0. No need to worry, everyone's FAME is still intact, as we realize that this is a critically important feature of Gemstone IV."

It would be WILD if this was how GSIV finally ended

Like it just never comes back after the restart

Not with a bang, but with a whimper

Damn, I was going to reactivate my account and buy thousands of dollars worth of SimuCoins at exactly this time window. Oh well, guess I'll spend it on ESO crowns instead.

Which probably means I should just close my accounts for a while.

No no no, you have to crowdfund the mobile game, then purchase it once, then re-sub for $99.99 a month. DR is also mandatory.

A lot of optimistic people post on here with a lot of convincing ideas and reasons for GSIV future after this "power outage and server maintenance" takes place.

I'm more of a realist. Simu is going to have issues getting things back up and running, but they'll get there. For our patience and understanding, they will provide unlimited stat fixing capabilities for everyone.......

On the test server.

If you ever thought GS was going to go out with a bang... Well... Don't know what to tell you.

i honestly thought, before i knew the servers were down on maintenance that this was how the game went out.
Then I thought how mad I'd be if I sunk a lot of money into it. Not too fussed about time i've put into the game as I enjoyed it.

I imagine people who are rich in game don't mind losing the items and everything. When I had valuable items I always thought it was just a game I'd paid for like a new guitar. But I'd still be pissed.
I am really rambling here.

I've played the last couple weeks of a few games. Wildstar the most recent. While I never sunk nearly as much into them as I have GS, I was still upset to see them go. Well, more upset that I'd never beable to play them ever again. I think that is really the thing. Regardless of my feelings for how GS is ran right now, the stupid cash grabbing garbage they've began to embrace more tightly, all of that... I might not ever play again, I don't know, but knowing that I can is one thing.

SWG was my last "last day" game. Wildstar I'd quit long before the servers went down. Luckily SWG came back and is now free, which is great, but it's still a sad, tired engine. I wish they'd stuck it out instead of killing it for SWTOR. The concepts they tried in SWG were ahead of their time. With consistent updates to the backing, it'd be an awesome game today.

I never liked SWG. I prefer SWTOR and the story telling. Well, the original. I hate what they've done with it now. I still go back and play the new stuff though.

Nothing wrong with SWTOR, but SWG was the closest you'll ever get to a graphical MUD. They had player housing, everything was a giant sandbox, the story and economy were driven entirely by the players, and that was awesome. Having talked with a few of the original devs, they can see where it all went wrong. The company panicked when the big theme parks released and tried to change directions about 85% of the way through development. So they've got the sandbox almost done and were forced to try to shoehorn linear progression into it instead of being a skill based open world sandbox. Then they just kept going down that route when WoW started dominating, just trying to fit a square peg into a round hole until the servers went down.

The engine also couldn't handle the eventual number of player buildings in range, which newer games now know and limit things like draw distance and number of pieces visible at any given time, et cetera. You still even with great internet connections all around get rubberbanding as a result in SWG.

The one I coded for was and is a Pre-NGE deal, that true sandbox experience. When I left we were right on the cusp of having the Jump to lightspeed space stuff implemented. It's probably there now. I'm gonna have to check it out again.

Eh, that is just how they made all the MMOs back then. Basically followed UO's model.

My characters 'escaped' GS in that I play versions of them across other MMOs and video games. Maybe that's why it's so easy for me to not really care what happens to GS.

That's true. UO was and is very much a graphical MUD too. I think the first Everquest was similar also. Similar enough that people kept saying they might get sued by Diku, which of course was crazy, but you know.

Instancing became big after those MMOs, and I prefer instancing. You don't have to dash for property space.

You know what MMO really had potential but got completely bogged down by the companies running it with the lootboxes and pay to win BS? Atlantica Online. Freakin amazing concept, great battle system. Only MMO I've really played that had a semi interesting story and an actual party system where you're controlling a team of characters as opposed to just your main guy.
