View Full Version : BUYER BEWARE

GemStone IV operates in a "buyer beware" economy. When visiting merchant shops, use the tools provided to get an idea of what you are purchasing, namely any posted signs and the INSPECT verb. Though keep in mind, many merchant shops intend to keep an air of mystery about their wares. All shops items are sold as-is and no refunds or changes will be made, unless there is an error in how the item is constructed.
When making a purchase from another player, there are several ways everyone can protect themselves from getting scammed, such as asking to see the note or contents of a container before buying, getting a bard to LORESING, having a warrior ASSESS, casting Elemental Detection, and using one of the magic crystals (such as the one in the Abandoned Inn). In order to avoid someone running off with your money before handing over an item, use the EXCHANGE verb. All buyers are responsible for protecting themselves from dishonest dealers, so it is a good idea to check into the reputation of a seller when making a large investment of silvers. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it most likely is!

It is, after all, entirely possible to lore sing or assess an item you can't hold.
GMs really suck sometimes.

I'm assuming people have been having problems lately with BS items sold in PC shops?

No, I believe this is stemming from a very specific incident where a player walked off with a set of 8x Brig for nearly 10 mill less than the offered price. The seller accidently exchanged for the wrong amount, twice.
The other person took the item, and when the other person asked for the remainder of the amount the new owner of the Brig's response was...
"Sucks to be you."
Its a nasty situation. I wasn't personally involved, though I have been following the issue for reasons of my own. Not pretty.

Lesson learned? There are alot of assholes who see nothing wrong with taking advantage of their fellow player in any way possible. They don't care about anyone elses money, feelings, or enjoyment of the game. As long as they think they can get away with it, they will do it, regardless of the cost to others.

That's why it's always a good idea to have a trusted, older friend around when doing business. It's a shame that people have to go into any transaction fully armed against possible fraud, but it's the truth of things and has been for quite awhile.

As an honest merchant...
I am all for allowing anyone to check out my items in any way they see fit that will determine if they will purchase my merchandise.
However...,
If I buy from someones shop, and get teh killer deal, I sure as hell am not oging to say, uh, think you meant to charge more. namely because I believe things are WAY too overpriced now!
(Tsin awesome uber items come to mind as an example..., and the GM's will not release more items of thier caliber, which I believe to be a huge crock of shit, but thats another topic.)
Dropping my dime...,
Respectfully,

not that I condone 'ripping' people off, but doesn't this situation add more to the potential 'rp' atmosphere that this game is supposed to be about.
people do that all the time in real life, why shouldn't a game be any different.

Not really, since it stems from a typo which has nothing to do with RP.
That, and people that take advantage of these situations generally don't care about RP to begin with.
But this is about BUYER BEWARE, not SELLER BEWARE

There actually was a great deal of Roleplaying potential considering the race and culture of some of the people involved. This merchant decided he rather take the silvers and fuck the roleplay. "Sucks to be you..." Thats a god damn quote from the log I have read of the buyer.
Disgusting.

Heh, buyer beware. Seller beware as well.
Sometime late last summer (I think) I happened to pick up a set of 4x very heavily crit padded chain armor from a player shop for 4.5m. Definitely missing a 0 there. Pretty high profile merchant, had talked to him a handful of times.
I returned it, and he gave me a pretty nice sabre in exchange. Good deeds don't go unrewarded.

You gotta realize, 90% of people in this game are so greedy and money-driven it's unbelievable, most will do anything to make a buck. Guess ya just gotta be more careful.

Wrong. The treasure generator could produce a 10x indredibly weighted weapon with self mana guidance these days. Its just highly unlikely.
