Looking for a good, under $2K, desktop gaming computer. Don't need a monitor, keyboard or mouse, just the computer itself.

I haven't kept up with what's good anymore so looking for advice on a good prebuilt (or even a build I guess).

I want something that'll handle complex calculations in R and Python, and great graphics for if I ever get back to gaming like WoW or similar.

Yes, I'm old. Get over it and offer up your youthful recommendations.

Oh, frankly under $1k is prefered, but I put $2k cause I'm a baller.

Are you building or buying a prebuilt?

Are you building or buying a prebuilt?

I'm competent enough to build it, but prebuilt is easier. I'm good either way so long as it's an Amazon/Tiger buy or a prebuilt.

My last computer is coming up on nearly 6 years old and I built it motherboard up, it's just showing it's age and I think it'll be cheaper to buy new or build new than try to get it up to current technology.

Get a barebones from that, buy your own graphics card, stick it in. I paid $800 for a barebones, processor, hard drive, OS, Ram (Currently still the 8th fastest processor on the market a year later and 32 gigs of very fast ram). Saved a couple hundred buying the graphics card elsewhere. Works spectacularly. Great company. Plus if you buy without a graphics card, they send you a free backup shitty one because they need to throw one in to benchmark and stress test the machine.

Edit to add: One note if you go this route. You can use their baseline model to customize and make a barebones out of, but the ram choices will suck on the bottom tier one. Just talk to a sales rep and ask if they can upgrade the ram to the choices available for the next model up. They'll do it for $50 and you'll get much nicer ram with a much better overall price for the same hardware otherwise.

Actually thinking about it, it may be 7 years old now. And Amazon/Tiger is just an example. So long as it's an easy buy I'm ok with building something... I just don't want to invest a ton of time in it.

I used this to upgrade my computer and it was really helpful to find out if the different parts will be compatible.

Also, depends on what you are using your computer mainly for. Graphic games, text games (lol), data entry, etc..

For prebuilts this one isn't half bad:
https://www.amazon.com/Alienware-Gaming-PC-Desktop-Aurora/dp/B076BHG74V

Has a 1080 and a decent CPU, biggest things you're looking for. Alienware has absolutely retarded case design which make futureproofing hard if not impossible, and they run hot. You'll want an SSD for a windows boot.

LOL. I actually have like 5 zip disks I need a zip drive to see whats on them. Nothing important I'm sure... probably GS logs and maybe some porn.

In other news, a quick search on the old interwebs popped up this big ass desktop.

I want it only because it's big and has purdy leds. Why the fuck do we need leds anyway?

Don't get a big computer. The bigger the computer, the bigger the explosion.

Thanks. I put an SSD in my (old) computer, IIRC 80GB just for windows boot drive and it's worked fine and still seems fine, slave drive is quarter terabyte uh..HDD I think. Worth it to migrate over the SSD or just start new do you think? I'd prefer to get a cooler machine if you have a rec... always seem to push the heat envelope when I'm doing complex calculations (again, R and python stuff).

I know. They aren't poor quality, just overpriced. The 2080 version of what I linked is $500 more.

As an aside, the upgrade to the 2080ti is worth it. Games aren't worth playing unless you can play them at 200 FPS faster than your eye can see and your monitor can display.

I always prefer a fresh install, less issues that way.

For cases, I recommend Corsair. They are solid and I like the more understated ones (I have a C70).

At this point we're doing custom builds so just get a 1080 - 2080ti, i7 9700/8700 (k if you want to OC for your programming), and a PSU, RAM, and motherboard to taste. Maybe a small closed loop watercooler. All that should be well under $2000 depending on the GPU.

Its a good time to go for a silent PC build, its so awesome to hear basically nothing*.
- ssd ... silent, go with the little thumbstick drives that attach directly to the motherboard without a cable... like a samsung evo
- get a fanless PSU, there are some 500w ones that would be good amount
- to do a fanless CPU, you need to find less than 65w TDP and put a huge heatsink on it.
- many GPUs are semi-fanless, meaning they have a fan but it won't run unless you are playing a game.

* sometimes you hear inductor whine when there are no fans to cover it up, sounds like leaves rustling though which doesn't piss me off too much

If you can't build it yourself, I don't have any experience with this company, but their shit looks great from looking at their website:

Same with this one:

So this is the one I put together a couple of weeks ago:

9308

I went with a sort of meh video card because I do not play any heavy graphic games, but I can drive up to 4 monitors with that card. I also upgraded from the stock Ryzen cooler, probably did not need to since the one that comes with the 2700X is pretty damn good, but I figured a radiator would be even better.

I have been blissfully happy with it, the SSD boots scary fast and everything opens pretty much instantly. The case is not suitable for WOW factor, but I did not care about that. Honestly I cannot think of anything I would change right now.

I have that exact Alienware Aurora R7 liquid cooled. Was too lazy to build my own figured I would give it a try. The case is awesome and sucks, because like said, everything in it makes it not customizable. For me it is one of the fastest machines I have ever used. It is impressive in everyway. Now they are liquid cooled It handles 3-4 instances of gemstone on your first monitor, bitcoin farming on your second video card, VR porn on your headset with an additional xvideos and pornhub on your first video card.

With all those apps running, and all 3 fans running only at 19% for less noise, liquid cooled the CPU is 39c and GPU 1-3 are 47c-48c. They no longer run hot like the R5 and lowers did

You're looking for a PC that could handle gaming, but that can greatly vary from person to person. What resolution and refresh rate are you using and what type of games (you mentioned WoW, but would you be looking into high-end new games pushing graphics to new levels?)

GPU - If you're not terribly interested in needing the best GPU, but something more than capable for 1080p gaming, I'd recommend the RTX 2060. If you're on a 1440p monitor look towards the RTX 2070. If by some chance you're using 4k then you want 2080 or 2080Ti. The price of a 2080Ti is outrageous and not worth it, in my opinion. Even the 2080 is overly expensive.

CPU - I'd suggest holding off till Ryzen 3 releases, but that could be another good 4 months from now, and getting something from that line up such as the Ryzen 7 3700 (12 cores/24 threads) or Ryzen 5 3600 (8 cores/16 threads)

RAM - If anything like Ryzen 2, you want something fast with tighter timings. But this is just a guess without actually seeing how different RAM performs

MB - you don't need anything fancy if you're not planning on overclocking and if you're not buying an unlocked CPU

Don't get an AMD processor. I used to swear by them, but they're helplessly behind Intel now and have been for about a decade. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the intel processors get you more bang for the buck, and have the added benefit of being able to act as GPUs in the event of graphics card failure.

Yes. Get them awesome Best Buy guys to help you out.

Last time I overhead a Best Buy Geek Squad person talking to someone about buying a new computer, they were pushing some Intel quad core processor on the lady. The lady asked what's the difference between having the quad core one the Geek Squad guy was pushing or the other one with two cores she was looking at.

He told the lady, "Each core runs at 2GHz, so when you have 4 of them you get 8GHz of speed. The other one with two cores, they only run at 1.8GHz so that's only 3.6GHz of speed. The quad core is more than double the speed so it's better and will work faster for you."

I started laughing loudly and said to the lady, don't listen to him, he's full of shit and walked away laughing.

It is almost easier to buy frame and some pieces and then scavenge reuseables from your old stuff. My current one I pulled the ssd drives, which I always keep, and to amuse myself made my current one have 10 hard drives. I think I might have only used 3 of them.

I still like the monster ass Corsair box, so I might go with that and then the rec's above from Taernath (and others that lined up).

Thanks everyone, I'm out of touch with pc tech today so this has been helpful.

Gaming laptops seem cool, but they fucking suck donkey assholes. Overpriced, can't upgrade hardware, and the battery life on them is such shit you wonder why you ever bought a laptop in the first place.

I just use my tablet or phone for streaming porn on the go.
