As far as I know, written cantonese is not any or much different than written mandarin. It's spoken where that makes a difference. I could be wrong in that. Like I said, I don't have any experience in Mandarin.

No doubt. It's a pain in the ass to fully comprehend it in the same way you would English. It's just fairly easy to get a little context with the easier characters, and once you have context, it's a lot easier to read.

Without any outside information, you can pretty easily tell that the picture of the box with a label on it is probably the symbol for package, or the stick figure in a building with an item is a factory:

This is actually how some of the Chinese transplants I deal with in the states read. They aren't strictly reading in order of what's written. They're picking out symbols they recognize and then working outwards. Obviously this isn't the school-taught way they should do it, but it's a simple means to an end for those with less education in the language and structure.
