View Full Version : 80's music: A veritable emergency of terrible urgency!

Liberi Fatali

Unmistakably, I am one of the biggest 80's music lovers out there. I find myself, ineptly, having to drive a substantial amount of time this weekend -- and I need your help! I'm trying to figure out which songs I should put on a mix for such gay revelry.

Are you an 80's fan? Hoho, if so, could you list me your top 5 (or top 3?) favorite 80's songs so I can see if I have them already (and if not, so I can gank them from Kazaa and add them to my mix!)?

Thanks very much!

Tabor.

I think we're alone now - Tiffany
Renegade - Styx
Strokin - (Can't remember is this REO Speedwagon?)
Karma Chameleon - Boy George and the Culture club (is this 80s?)

Too tired and drunk to think about this. I'll do this at work tomorrow morning. FYI wine is the devil.

I Think We're Alone now is a remake. The original is by the Shondells, recorded some time in the 60's. It's a fun song.

I had to google it, but I knew REO Speedwagon didn't record Strokin. Google says it's someone named Clarence Carter.

OK here are a bunch off the top of my head, not necessarily my top 5

1. Feels like Heaven - Fiction Factory
2. Don't tell me - Blanc Mange
3. Electric Blue - Ice House
4. Perfect Skin - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
5. Perfect Way - Scritti Politti

Of course The Style Council, OMD, The Specials, The English Beat, Ultravox, Talking Heads, Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs, Yaz, and Belouis Some are other good bets.

If you mean gay as in Beef Wellington then add Bronski Beat to the mix.

Since we have so many experts here...

I've been trying to find this one stupid song for 2 years now. (Not very diligently, mind you)

"I see your face before me". But not the original. I'm looking for the Pop remake. It's been so long since I've heard it, but I think it has a Franki Valli-ish sound to it. Anyone have any ideas?

I'd also suggest looking on Kazaa for punk covers of lots of these 80's songs. Most of them are pretty good/funny. I made a CD a while ago - I'll see if it's still in my car and list the remixed songs on it.

One I remember is No Doubt singing Come on Eileen.

"I See Your Face Before Me" is an oldie! Originated in the 30's. However, it's been recorded by these three guys, as well. Could it have been Jack Jones' rendition you heard, perchance?

Hey, thanks! If I can't find any on Kazaa (which usually happens when I do a search), I'll let you know.

Curiously, I never see Michael Jackson on any of the 80's compilation CD's on the market (you know, those 80's CD's with the supposed 'best' songs on them). I really enjoy his music, so I'm not sure why this is!

Hah, I like your type of music. I'm a big Emo/Punk fan myself. My favorite 80's rendition cover that I have is Thrice singing "Send Me an Angel" (STUPENDOUS SONG).

If you find the CD, can you list me a few of the bands and what song they sing? Punk + 80's = orgasmic.

That is because they would have to put an adult advisory sticker on it then. Listening to Michael Jackson may end in a trip to Neverland Ranch and one free rim job from the freak himself.

The reason you don't see MJ songs is probably the same reason you don't see Beatles or Zeppelin songs on 60's compilations.

I finally found it today. That wasn't even the right song. I could only remember a short snippet of the song, which was "I see your face before me", and that was what kept coming up on Google searches, so I was always looking for the wrong song.

It ended up being "Love is all around" by Wet Wet Wet. Who sound nothing like Frankie Valli. :(

Hee! Nope. Nobody was going to find "Love is All Around" while looking for "I See Your Face Before Me", sung by somebody who sounds sorta like Frankie Valli.
