You gesture at a gold leaf-encircled orb.
You sense that the orb is a magic item that holds the spell "Cloak of Shadows" with 5 charges.
It is a mage empowerable item.
You determine the leaf-encircled orb can hold an additional 155 charges.
Given enough time, you feel as though you could push this item to 18 charges.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

So after 155 uses it crumbles? How do empowerables work? Sorry but the wiki is terroble.
They behave like a MR except there is a lifetime limit on the number of charges that can be put into them.
They may or may not crumble when the last (currently held) charge is used. Just like any magic item, you should have a bard check the item and track charges if needed.

Can empowerable items be greened like MRs prematurely, or are they guaranteed to allow charging up to the max # of charges provided you prevent it from ever crumbling?

I don't know for sure but the announcement didn't have anything about it being any easier / no chance to green / etc. I always assumed for all intents and purposes they work just like normal MR items, with the exceptions being the max number of charges and hard shelf life of charges, to allow for less common (like 712!) spells to be released more often.
