The University of Virginia is punishing a Latina sorority for making its members study at least 25 hours per week. The university said it would be hazing to make an Hispanic person study that much.

According to the complaint, the sorority asks its members to study 25 hours per week. A recruit complained about the workload to a professor, who then forwarded the comment to UVa’s student affairs office and to police.

UVa conducted an investigation, according to the complaint, and found that the sorority’s study requirement violated the school’s hazing policy.

I am a little confused. It has been a bit since I was in college, but from what I recall, I would have to study 2-3 hours for every hour of classes I was taking. So at a minimum, when I carried 15 hours it was 30 hours of studying. I guess if you are carrying 12 then it could be as little as 24 but that sure as hell would not apply to any sort of science degree. I bet I studied 15-20 hours a week just for inorganic chem and still only barely passed it.

Besides, they asked to be part of the sorority, if they do not like the requirement, just quit, or is the court now going to say that they have a right to be a part of a private organization?

How do you make a Hispanic student for the purpose of studying in the first place? Do you just walk down to the Hispanic store and get one?

Do your own damn studying. You don’t need to make Hispanics to do it for you.

I majored in Computer Engineering. Normally I took 16 units of classes, so that meant 16 hours of classtime. Usually I studied at least 30 hours a week, sometimes it was 40-50 hours. A 25 hour study week would have been a light week for me. It's hard for me to imagine someone whining about having to study 25 hours a week.
