View Full Version : Shutdown = Pay Raises for Trump Admin. Officials

They totally deserve pay increases. Best Presidential administration ever.
The pay raises for Cabinet secretaries, deputy secretaries, top administrators and even Vice President Pence are scheduled to go into effect beginning Jan. 5 without legislation to stop them, according to documents issued by the Office of Personnel Management and experts in federal pay.
The raises appear to be an unintended consequence of the shutdown: When lawmakers failed to pass bills on Dec. 21 to fund multiple federal agencies, they allowed an existing pay freeze to lapse. Congress enacted a law capping pay for top federal executives in 2013 and renewed it each year. The raises will occur because that cap will expire without legislative action by Saturday, allowing raises to kick in that have accumulated over those years but never took effect, starting with paychecks that will be issued next week.
Cabinet secretaries, for example, would be entitled to a jump in annual salary from $199,700 to $210,700. Deputy secretaries would be entitled to a raise from $179,700 to $189,600. Others affected are under secretaries, deputy directors and other top administrators.
The pay of Pence is scheduled to rise from $230,700 to $243,500.

“For a thing like this to happen, I don’t believe in coincidences,” said Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees. “It certainly smells fishy, just as the federal workforce is being furloughed.”
The options for Congress include taking no action and allowing the raises to occur, approving the legislation passed by the House Thursday or passing a standalone measure to retain the pay freeze. It was unclear Thursday whether the White House had the authority, if it wanted to, to stop the increases.
“It looks like Trump has protected his own appointees, and everyone else gets screwed,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), whose Northern Virginia district has 77,000 federal workers, said in an interview. He suggested the president fix the problem by immediately issuing an executive order canceling the raises.

Stand in front of a wall, fence, or anything blocking you from entering another property. Now, you can go over the wall, you can go under the wall, you can even go through the wall. In doing so, what are you engaging in?
That is why a physical border exists. To let you, a citizen from another country, know that there are ways to seek asylum or help or even migrate. Doing so by going under, over or even through a physical barrier, is the illegal method of entry into the country.

Illegal activity is done in the gaps between our borders. So much so that certain routes are checked by patrols for bodies or signs of. Now, the natural argument is that those people need to 'do their jobs better' but that's pretty weak. Considering most of those guys have hundreds of, often inaccessible in a vehicle, miles of DESERT to check.
This, a wall, allows those people in charge of things like National Security to physically deter would be traffickers of human beings and drugs.

You have a very poor understanding of how walls and border security work.
Did the Berlin Wall stop people from crossing? Nope, and that shit was guarded by machine gun nests, mines, dogs, etc. A wall wouldn't do shit to stop illegal immigration.
Between 1945 and 1988, around 4 million East Germans migrated to the West. 3.454 million of them left between 1945 and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. The great majority simply walked across the border or, after 1952, exited through West Berlin. After the border was fortified and the Berlin Wall was constructed, the number of illegal border crossings fell drastically. The numbers fell further as the border defenses were improved over the subsequent decades. In 1961, 8,507 people fled across the border, most of them through West Berlin. The construction of the Berlin Wall that year reduced the number of escapees by 75% to around 2,300 per annum for the rest of the decade. The Wall changed Berlin from being one of the easiest places to cross the border, from the East, to being one of the most difficult.[1] The number of escapees fell further to 868 per annum during the 1970s and to only 334 per annum between 1980 and 1988. However, escapees were never more than a small minority of the total number of emigrants from East Germany. Far more people left the country after being granted official permits, by fleeing through third countries or by being ransomed by the West German government. During the 1980s, only about 1% of those who left East Germany did so by escaping across the border.[2]
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_attempts_and_victims_of_the_inner_German_bo rder
Edit to add: and in a rare double whammy shutdown of your stupid, poorly researched arguments - Consider that the more difficult the means, the lower the overall rates. This psychological phenomenon has been researched fairly in depth with suicide rates. When it's easier, more people do it. When the available means are more difficult, not only does that method lower, but rates lower overall. Here's a Harvard study that details it.

Just the legitimate threat of it being more difficult to cross the border illegally deters people from trying.

It's funny watching Androidpk make the argument that some people will find a way around a wall so why even bother?
That's why car makers stopped putting locks on their vehicles, why even bother when some people will find a way into a car anyways?
That's also why in California they passed a law making it illegal for home builders to build homes with locks, they figure it just unnecessarily increases the price of a new home since people can find a way into a home anyways.
I know no one else on the forum needs me to spell this out but I'm pretty sure Androidpk needs me to spell this out...I'm being sarcastic.

I don't think you're making the point you think you're making. Notice in both instances we are talking about criminals breaking the law, yet you're apparently okay with stripping legal gun owners of their constitutional rights while ignoring the fact that criminals will still find a way to get their hands on a gun, but you want to use the same argument that we shouldn't build a wall because criminals will find a way into the US anyways.
Here's something that may shock you; NO ONE wants dangerous criminals to own guns. The problem is your so called "common sense gun control" laws always seem to target law abiding citizens.
Try again but this time remove your head from your ass before responding.

This may come as a surprise to you, but sometimes even if people feel a certain way, they refrain from making arguments when literally all the evidence is against that argument. Please read the previous sentence twice. It's a skill you could benefit from learning. Still waiting for your argument on how increased border security doesn't decrease illegal immigration though, so maybe wait to learn that lesson til after that.

Or tighter regulations on guns because the bad guys will always still get them?
They wouldn't get them if the guns had walls around them.

Call outs from TSA employees are up 300%. Not good for airport security.
Please sight this source so we can laugh even harder at you.
Call ins are up 1.1% over last year and it's flu season. It's like the shutdown has proven we don't need most of the federal government.

It's like the shutdown has proven we don't need most of the federal government.
Some people are making it sound like the end of the world because local businesses near some parks who rely on tourist dollars are chipping in to keep the roads clear of snow, the garbage bins empty, and the bathrooms cleaned. Oh and some groups have volunteered to pick up trash at the National Mall in DC. It's absolute anarchy!
Not sure Democrats, the party of big government, wants people to realize that not much changes when part of the federal government shuts down.

Democrats are not disagreeing on that. They are disagreeing on a giant 15ft, 1500 mile steel wall that will cost 100’s of billions to actually complete.
Remember Trump wants 50 Billion which will not complete the wall only build a part of it. An incomplete wall is like making a cup with half a bottom, in a word, useless.
You have a big problem with zeros. Are you hyper-inflating it to make some sort of point.. or are you this miserably informed?

I have no dog in the fight here, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that since most cities vote democratic in the first place, that... probably has something to do with it. There are plenty of rural areas that are fine with ignoring, suppressing, or otherwise hindering immigration laws. They just don't have large governing bodies like cities do to announce it.
Look at a place like New Hampshire. Live Free or Die. Their whole state basically runs on "Do what you want to do, don't get all up in each other's business, and everybody will get along just fine.". Most of those people are probably more offended at the notion of adding a law to their books than they are about whatever the law would be about.

Yes, I mean most major cities. Like the ones on this list of sanctuary cities.
http://www.apsanlaw.com/law-246.List-of-Sanctuary-cities.html
You don't really see smaller towns declaring sanctuary status so much because they don't have large, overarching governments to do so. They just kind of do things that make sense to them without making big announcements that are nationally recognized. Does Princeton, NJ want immigrants to be safe and allowed? You bet your ass, but the population is only 32,000. It's a well known thing there, in rich hippie central, but on a national scale it's not worthy of note.

They don't need to be large, overarching governments to declare themselves a sanctuary city. Declaring themselves a sanctuary city just means they are instructing their local police department to not cooperate with ICE unless they have a warrant. I'm sure crazy California will eventually make it so the police can't cooperate even if there is an active warrant for murder.

Pretty sure the romaine lettuce death count was like 5 people, at least as of June 1. I'm sure millions have died from lettuce since then though. Possibly billions.
No wait, there were 0 deaths with the second outbreak. Just a bunch of people with diarrhea. Which you should be able to relate to, because you are actual diarrhea.

2 easy steps to not die from lettuce.
1. Don't eat processed lettuce, that shits gross.

In the midst of the longest-ever government shutdown in U.S. history, Senate Republicans have instead decided to consider a bill on Thursday to codify existing restrictions that make it harder for low-income people to get abortions.
The bill codifies the Hyde Amendment — a provision that passes annually and prohibits federal Medicaid dollars from covering abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment — among other things. The bill is unlikely to get the 60 votes it needs to move forward. The vote also comes ahead of this weekend’s March for Life rally, the largest annual anti-abortion event nationwide.
Looks like conservatives have their priorities straight. Instead of going with a spending bill that was unanimously approved, they're coming up with ways to fuck poor people during a government shutdown.
Absolutely deplorable.
