I was looking through a verb list and spotted this one:
>gem
-=*: REAL GEMS :*=-
Hidden in the lands in and around all of the cities are gems which you can find and turn in for "REAL" precious stones with the same name. Participation is easy. All you have to do is keep a sharp eye out searching everywhere you can. Real gems *will* be found. Maybe the next one by you.
Note: Free accounts, employees of Simutronics, and relatives of Simutronics employees are not eligible. You may only find a maximum of one gem every six months. When you find a "real" gem, you will be given instructions on how to exchange it. Follow these instructions precisely. If you have any questions after you find a gem, please do an ASSIST and a Gamemaster will help you with the proper information.
Type GEM MORE for more info.
I vaguely remember this from back in the day. Did anyone ever get one of these? Is it still running? I doubt it is, but I think it would be hilarious to get a freaking gemstone from Simu.

It's still running, but they're hidden fairly thoroughly. Couple years ago, they hid a new set of em. I think most have been found by now.

I only seem to notice real gems found when new areas are opened

No kidding, huh. What kind of gems were they and any idea where they were hidden? I'm not going to run off looking for one, just interested.

I dont know the type of gems but you would see the message:
Soandso found a real gem
whenever someone found one

I found one in the Solhaven inn a couple years ago.
I think that's the re-stocking they did that Makkah mentioned.
It was behind a curtain in a random, pointless room at the inn.

I've heard rumor that they're just cheap common gems. Not worth the cost of shipping it to you. Can't say first hand though.

They send like a sliver of the gem... I found some topaz, I think. Came with a pretty beef wellington certificate too, lol.
I don't remember paying shipping though.

Didn't mean that they charged you shipping. Meant that the gem wasn't worth waht Simu paid to ship it too you. Sounds spot on by your account.

Last time I actually saw a bunch of people find some, was when they opened EN... there were a LOT that day.

The woman who plays my in-game mom found a garnet once.

Is it me, or does Chadj look like that "Sherminator" from American Pie?

I found one once a couple years ago. It was about on par with what you get from the little quarter machines at the grocery store, or at best a flea market item.
But it was free so I'm not complaining, even if it is junk.
Would be funny if a GM accidentally put an uncut diamond in as a real gem though.

Its a nice keepsake, from what I am told. Just something special for the players. Its not meant to impart wealth or anything.

There were a bunch found one night around the landing not too long ago.

Correct. Over the past two years or so there have been 2-3 of such occasions where over a dozen gems were found all at once.
I have since squelched the messaging.

Its because the GMs tend to install fresh batches of them every-now-and-then. I recall Warden at the last Simucon saying something like "we'll be putting in a few in the next month or so".

I hate it when they announce stuff like that because then it becomes a treasure hunt and everyone wants to find one.

...everyone wants to find one.
I don't.
I would sooner search under tables for dust bunnies than to waste time finding a brown zircon that I would instantly throw away when it arrived in the mail.
Shit, for real, go buy a rock hammer and go look for "real" gems.

Eh... I look at it as people wanting to find one because they know SOMEONE is going to find one and it might as well be them more so than them really wanting the actual gem.

I remember when they released a lot after GS4 went live (actually it might have been a fair while after GS4 went live because I could go to the Bog in Vaalor)
I saw the messaging come up that a few people had found one and was totally disinterested in looking until Evey (Evelith) got one and I was like "Cool...I wanna find one too"
Then Hevinsbane found one and I totally went off the idea.
