View Full Version : NPC's increasing their power (The fall of... me?!).

[I posted this on the main boards, and forgot to do so here. I have about 6 more logs (quite brief ones, though) if anyone wants me to post more (just ask). Notice how he kept increasing his power? Oh, how I hate that!]

Hoity-toity.

I was deceived into thinking (from a post on the boards here) that Nershuul's TD was relatively hitable for the standard capped player. So I went into Solhaven full of insults for him.

...Heh. Boy, did that go awry. I'll include the log of my first encounter with him, but the 7 more deaths that followed after which I won't.

At one point, however, I realized that he had quite a few spells up. I got rapid fire, and then dispelled all of them. His TD was then hitable (for me, at least) at 429. Unfortunately, I thought I had DC prepped, but I still had Mind Jolt prepped. I ended up stunning him about 100,000 times before I realized I was not doing any damage. I then switched to DC (stupidly! Grr. I should have used a different spell), and got him about 6 times before he came to and cold-cocked me into oblivion via the Zerroth ground-attack move.

He had some clever retorts to my insults, though.

This about sums up my night, though:

Strength (STR): 100 (25) ... 60 (5)
Constitution (CON): 68 (4) ... 16 (-22)
Dexterity (DEX): 100 (35) ... 60 (15)
Agility (AGI): 100 (30) ... 60 (10)
Discipline (DIS): 100 (15) ... 60 (-5)
Aura (AUR): 100 (35) ... 105 (37)
Logic (LOG): 100 (25) ... 60 (5)
Intuition (INT): 100 (30) ... 60 (10)
Wisdom (WIS): 100 (30) ... 105 (32)
Influence (INF): 100 (20) ... 60 (0)

And here I just spent a week straight of hunting to recover my CON from Ablen's whoopin'. I concede!

[Solhaven, Liabo Plaza]
Easily as large as the entire North Market, the plaza is paved with a spiral pattern of once-colorful bricks, but now only blood and ashes decorate their once pristine surfaces. On the eastern edge of the plaza stands a collapsed, charred limestone arch, and beyond it the ash-paved avenue stretches toward Vornavis' towering west wall. Black, splintered bones litter the ground around the arch. You also see a crumbling stone statue, a glowing circle, a battered mithril trunk, an old barrel, a terra-cotta bench and a grey stone arch.

Charred pilings and a stone block wall shore up Bayside Road and stand against the constant action of the waves. This section of Bayside is windier than most, and bits of blackened refuse and the occasional smoke spiral dance about in the winds. A splintered wooden bench sits facing the bay, its wooden shards spattered with dried blood. You also see a rascally island spirit that is flying around, a scaled Luukosian guard, a snake-headed black sentinel and a high canvas tent.

You feel your extra magical awareness leave you.
A white glow rushes away from you.
The buzz of thoughts in your mind subsides.
Like a faint wisp of a barely-remembered dream, your brief, enhanced comprehension of arcane mysteries slips away.
The powerful look leaves you.
The air about you stops shimmering.
The dull golden nimbus fades from around you.
The bright luminescence fades from around you.
A faint silvery glow fades from around you.
A dark shadow seems to detach itself from your body, swiftly dissipating into the air.
The deep blue glow leaves you.
You feel your extra strength departing.

The layer of protection fades away.
The very powerful look leaves you.
The white light leaves you.
The air calms down around you.
The light blue glow leaves you.

It seems you have died, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...

You mentally give a sigh of relief as you remember that the Goddess Lorminstra owes you a favor.

Yep, that'd be why. He killed me 6 times. At one point I managed to get about 5 casts of Dark Catalyst off on him before he boosted his CS +200 and made it 800 and then killed me.

GM's have their "Durr" moments too, I suppose. I have little doubt that if he could redo the situation he would have acted with a bit more "Flare".

Running an Invasion cannot be easy.

Nershuul is a cheating bastard, the only reason he has not killed me yet is because I always run off when he comes in the room...he did catch me with one of those major ewaves, but much like you his minions could not hit me stunned laying down. Yeah, it seems to me he kept pumping his AS, and his natural TD...even when you do hit him, he takes like 1000 damage and doesn't die. Hell, even his stupid V'tullian bots (monsters) suck ass, because I can't critt them, they have to be bled to death.

It's part of the story line for him to stay alive right now, so I guess we need to just get used to it...at least he can be hit, Morvule is plain absurd.

I'm sure if he had it to do over, his AS would have been 1500 from the start.

Most storylines don't make sense if any old PC can just walk in and blow up the whole event in their own personal vision of what the event is.

That being said, I don't get involved in most storylines anyway, because it is essentially the same people at the core of each one. The storyline running GMs have their favorites, and their favorites are the only ones who really get any of the play.

When an event is going on in a town, I suggest the same thing I say to most. Pack your bags, leave the town, and let the little core of 15 people and the 3-4 GMs involved have their fun. Don't give them the chance to impose their vision of RP on you, because the little core of people always involved love the attention they get from the rest of the people who turn into willing pawns.

So... Leave the Griffin Sword Saga to wrap itself up with 15 people. I am sure they will all do just fine.

OMG I AM A GM! THE PLAYERS MUST NOT EFFECT THE STORYLINE I HAVE SO CAREFULLY WRITTEN! TIME TO LEVEL UP.

Way to go for some excellent RPing there. I agree with the consensus that the above was BS, and is exactly why the GSS is a pile of crap. If I wanted to see an epic adventure with a pre-determined ending, I'd watch a movie.

02-21-2005, 12:25 PM
The problem is, 99% of the all story lines are crap and already pre-determined. Take invasions for instance. If everyone just decided to throw up the middle finger and not fight, I guarntee the monsters would go away eventually.

Then again, one needs to look at it from the GM's perspective. If you had one character that changed the course of a story line by killing an NPC or doing something great, people would bitch favoritism something fierce. I mean look how it is now. So seriously, what is a GM to do?

GMs in other games seem to have done alot better in regards to storylines. If I wanted to be another generic peon who just watches titans like Ulstram and Morvule clash, I'd read a comic. As it happens the way NPCs for quests are laid out is that they make us, the would-be hero's of GS, look like fucking peasants, even at the cap, which Tabor has proved.

Obviously, they are not going to allow a death of a single NPC to cancel an entire storyline.

There will always be people who are against GSS style plotlines because they do promote favoritism. Favoritism for those who devote the most time and roleplay to the plots. We can go back and forth on this, and I doubt it would make any difference to those who have already made up their minds.
