Cripes, I hope it misses me. Weather.com said it was probably not going to be a class 5 when it made landfall, but it would still have winds of over 100 mph. Also said it was going to hit somewhere north of South Carolina...waves are supposed to get higher than 20 feet along the eastern seaboard.
If it hits here, I hope power comes back after a couple days.

Um.. I'm in New Jersey, any idea how close it will get? I know a few years back one got us and it sucked because my basement flooded (my bedroom is in the basement) and I slipped and fell in the water and dropped my book in it.. my poor ruined book!

If you are talking about Floyd, that did suck indeed.
I believe that was a noreaster though.
The last actual hurricane to hit Jersey was I think David a looooong time ago.

Looks like Florida's safe...I think I'm still going to get winds that are between 35 and 50 knots though.

As long as it stays away from Hawaii, all is well. I'll rent out my basement in the nice hurricane-free Minnesota for cheap if you guys want to run. ;)

Hell yeah. The sound of rain and wind puts me right to sleep. And even if I wasn't sleeping, I love to read and listen to the rain.

I grew up with hurricanes, living in northeastern Florida, but I was never in a flimsy apartment with huge glass doors. I think the patio doors worry me the most.

Be careful guys, and no wind surfing like those morons during Hurricane Andrew. And keep your pets inside and and... bring all hurt wildlife this way.

Thank goodness it's missing all my family back in New England, Although, now that I live in MN, I think I prefer hurricanes to tornadoes. You can prepare for a hurricane, know approximately when it's going to hit, and although they do fantastic amounts of damage, if you get hit by a tornado, there is almost zero chance anything will be left intact afterward. I have survived Bob, Gloria, and a few others I forget their names. Fortunately, I have never been in a tornado

UNC Chapel Hill's closing at 2 PM. So far, just rain, a bit of wind....a lot of people parking where they shouldn't and whining and complaining like the world is going to end. A few traffic lights went out, which is about the only serious thing so far.

The day the hurricane smote the mortals...
----------------------------------------------------------
::shrieks!::
It is upon us! Repent now! Repent, for the end is nigh!
::Bell tolls ominously in the distance::
Hearken ye my friends unto the village chapel! There we can use the power of all the gods to save us!
::The crowds murmur::
Yes! The gods will save us! Bring us a sacrifice!
::Crowds chant eerily, droning on about the gods and sacrifice::
----------------------------------------------------------
::snickers:: Well its not that bad... but its still not fun.

Startin to get dubious here. A lot of traffic, especially on Franklin Street, the main Chapel Hill thoroughfare. Trees down, but the power's still on. May have more to say later on when the eye gets closer, but, for now, not too bad.

My power went out from 5 pm yesterday to about 2 hours ago. And classes got canceled for the 6th time in school history.
Wow, UVA's been around a long time too. You guys must have to go in the worst of snow.
We hardly got touched down here in Radford. Just seemed like a heavy rain storm.
Watching CNN yesterday you'd have thought it was the end of the world. Media hype at its best.

Hurricane my ass! It was the weakest storm ever. I have seen summer thunderstorms stronger than that. Did it get me out of school? No. Did it get me out of work? Nope.
What did it get me? Four long hours at work.. 2 of which had no power.. which means this... since I work at a grocery store we had to pull all of the dairy items off the shelves, into carts, and get them onto a truck.
Then after doing that for nearly two hours and running out of room, they were nice enough to buy us a $100 worth of pizza. Then what happens? The lights go back on and I spend the rest of the time putting the items back on the shelves! Which is so much harder because you have to figure out which thing goes where and how many rows it has... Thank you Isabel!
