View Full Version : What Would You Have Said?

Tonight, I had my in game husband and myself in Pinefar opening boxes. I had just moved him outside for a parchment rep and his character's former wife came through...this is the log of that interaction. The relevent bits of info here. Our characters have been married for 3.5 years and we've known one another for 4.5 years. I had honestly forgotten even who she was, but after she jogged my memory - it was like de ja vu only a few years earlier that she reappeared from a hiatus and basically said the same sort of things to my character...the you have nothing to fear stuff...

I, nor my character are intimidated by this person, nor is there any insecurity about the RP between my character and her husband - I was just awestruck by her audacity. I can understand having a connection with a character and all that, but to assume that she was so important that she once again had to reassure the wife that she wasn't a threat almost had me speechless. I struggled for something to say. I asked my character's husband how long they had been married, and he said a year if that.

So girls, and guys (if you are inclined) what do you think? How would you have responded?

The porch is floored with wide, wooden planks, swept clean of snow and painted a wishful shade of green. All down the length of it, rocking chairs sit in a row, silent in the winter hush. This far north, the snow is a constant presence, transforming the row of pristine, green and white rockers into a wonderful winter folly. Generous, albeit short, double doors lead into the building. You also see a wooden barrel and a flight of stone steps.

I didn't really see the big deal, but it's certainly apparent that despite your claim you weren't threatened by her, you sure needed to remind her with almost every comment that he's your property now!

It would have been more interesting and juicy if she'd been whispering sweet nothings to him while talking to you.

I'd probably have headed the whole thing off by whispering to her (when she hugged him) that I was playing the character at the moment, but would let him know that she'd sent her "regards" when next he was in-game.

I don't deal with women that are catty very well. I tend to cut them off before they have a chance to feel superior in the situation. I would have been polite, yet short. Perhaps I would have whispered to her that I was in his body, I would tell him that she stopped by to say Hello. Then smiled and said "Nice to have met you.. I'm sure we'll see you again soon, take care". Her whole "I'm not gonna try and steal him back" gig, was uncalled for. Obviously, she's trying to make you feel inferior. (as if)

I don't see where she was defensive at all. XXX walked in, hugged him and said not to fear her since she's the ex. I would have been apprehensive about such an introduction, but TRL handled it very well.

Then again I've never been a fan of women with power trips over men they used to have a relationship with. Let's repeat that.. USED to. I don't know what makes them think that they're so grand that they could take any man away from their wife, but whatever, it's her fantasy world.

Jolena
02-16-2005, 09:59 AM
I had a situation similar to this once with Stunseed about a year ago or so. There was a woman whom he had been in an in game relationship with who disappeared for a while and she came back. Of course, we were together and had been for some time in game and she didn't wanna accept it. Basically she showed up and started being all smiley etc. but in whispers was very much trying to be 'more then friends' and finally after some time started to be very catty with Jolena openly as well. Basically, Jo laughed at her and took no mind of it. Eventually she just went away again. I've found that the best way to handle those things and get the person to give it up is just to take it with a grain of salt and chuckle.

Czeska
02-16-2005, 10:00 AM
I didnt see it as a big deal. A lot of women will automatically assume that their guy's ex is trying to move back in, so to speak. Women can be ridiculously competitive. Maybe she actually meant what she said. Either way, as long as she's not stalking him, I'd just blow it off.

YancyDC
02-16-2005, 10:01 AM
Since you were playing the husband at the time, have him kill her instead. I find that's always a good way of making clear where ex's stand with me. IRL, of course, but I'm sure it could apply here, too.

DeV

Tell her to fuck off if she comes around again. She's nothing but trouble.

Kainen

Better than killing her.. ignore her. Act distracted, don't respond. Eventually she will leave you alone.

Shari
02-16-2005, 12:39 PM
This...I why I RAAARELY bother with in-game relationships.

I don't think it was really necessary for you to repeat that you were married for so long. I would have been curt, and polite. I would have told her I'll relay the message and been done with that. If she had kept talking I would have probably ignored her.

Women are psycho.

Skeeter
02-16-2005, 02:11 PM
This just reinforces that women are crazy and uber-jealous when compared to men.

She was polite, you were a bit defensive. I'll never understand why the fuck 2 women can't be friends. People say guys are competitive. Women are 100x more competitive, to the point where they can't even be friends with each other.

If you see 2 women in game being nice to each other assume 1 or both is a man.

Ew... I don't like the way she came off in that log. I agree with CT, there's something weird about women who like to assert their now-defunct position regarding men they used to be with. I also love how her account and your IG-husband's account of how long they were married differ.

From an RP standpoint, it was rude of her to introduce herself as "wife" after addressing him as "husband." She clearly knew he was married, and had that been my girl she would have thrown a fit. In cold tones and cutting words, of course.

I'm not big on in-game relationships however, once one of my characters met a guy that had been sort of hanging out with another female character. He got to know my character and they started spending more and more time together. He was never engaged or anything to this other female character. I suppose she was hoping it would go that way. Anyway, after it was obvious that he and my character were a couple, I start getting private thoughts from her that it was ok (like I needed her permission) that he and my character were together because she played another roleplaying game and in that game she was married to a really nice guy. wtf?? Can you say... NEED TO SEPARATE OOG AND IG? I mean, why she was having to tell me all about how she had to be all that (or something) because she was married in a different roleplaying game was just weird. My psycho antenna went up. Then she rerolls her character and announces on the amulet (this is no lie) that she used to be soandso but was now this character due to 'romantic circumstances'. The guy that my character was with was one of those really nice guys that women just liked. I use to tease him in IMs about her. I think she must have had major problems. It was sort of sad. (but not sad enough for me to not make fun of it) :P

This situation seems mild to me. The best way to avoid having to deal with it on your own is simple. Don't MA.

We were in Pinefar for god's sake. We had just walked out to go to a private place to pick, so saying don't MA might sound all PC but that doesn't solve anything. She would have acted exactly the same had he been in his body or not. (She did the same thing several years ago, when he was in his body.)

You're right the situation is mild, but I didn't post it because I thought that this was some psycho out of control situation, I did so because I wanted to see how certain people would have handled it. It's about RPing a strange situation, and gauging if my take on it registers with the opinions of others on here (well some folks anyway  )

I'm not trying to go all PC on you... just stating that it would have been up to him to actually roleplay it out instead of you if you hadn't been using his character.

I think you did fine with the situation. You were a tad defensive but I'm not sure I wouldn't have been also if I had been put on the spot like that too.

"OH MY GOD! THANK YOU FOR YOUR APPROVAL! I KNEW SOMETHING WAS MISSING IN OUR MARRIAGE, BUT I COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT UNTIL YOU SAID IT WAS OKAY! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I AM ALSO GLAD YOU AREN'T GOING TO TRY TO TAKE HIM BACK SINCE YOU ARE SUCH A SMARTER AND BETTER LOOKING WOMAN THEN I! YOUR SO KIND!" and then start kissing her feet and bowing down. Considering that situation was probably the last thing you expected, in character, or as the mind behind the character.. ya did just fine.

Lady XXX's behavior was distasteful, certainly. Such cattiness might be somewhat acceptable, in character, if their former relationship was a recent event. Not after such a length of time, though. I dunno.. I think some people just have to have drama ingame, no matter how they create it.. even if it's one-sided.

But, hey, it's a giggle for you and your ingame man. A good "as if!" to chuckle over, while sharing a toast to your life together. The joke's on her, for taking her roleplay to such a silly place. There are much better ways to enjoy the game. :)
