View Full Version : Sahra is an idiot

Sahra smiles and pets her dragon's leathery nose before clambering upon its knee and scaling its bent neck to assume the saddle. "Fly, HuoLong!" she cries in a grating voice. With a horrendous hiss, the dragon gathers itself, and leaps into the sky, dwindling quickly from sight. You wonder, absently, why you don't have a dragon, too.

I get so sick of seeing this every day. Sahra, whoever you are, thats not roleplay you FUCKING TOOL.

I understand that the messaging is right before a queued movement script, but has anyone attempted to explain to this person how very wrong those ACTS/SMILES are? Some people seriously have no idea that making use of the verbs in that way is against TOS. Free-form RP is widly accepted in many RPGS.

Fallen
02-10-2005, 08:53 AM
I looked, but cannot find specific text which defines the Act/Smile policy. Can someone please pull it up for me, if it does exist, and post it both here and in the other thread regarding this character?

If it is not specifically stated anywhere, could we try to list the DO's and DON'T's we are sure that govern the verb?

Kainen

Knowing Simutronics, I bet there isn't anything put in black and white.

My thoughts are this: Make it something you can do and don't make your smiles or acts roleplay for other people in the room.

CrystalTears
02-10-2005, 08:59 AM
I couldn't find anything in the TOS either, Fallen. I think it's more about discussing the actual verbs and its uses and that usually is discussed on the boards or with speaking with a GM about it.

They really should put up a document about the correct uses for smile and ACT that don't abuse them.

Fallen
02-10-2005, 09:03 AM
Hmm, when I have the time today I will try to ask on the boards for specific clarification.

Who knows what is ACTUALLY allowed, and what is simply player enforced ideals?

Wezas
02-10-2005, 09:49 AM
It was wrong - but I didn't think it was horrible until this part:

"You wonder, absently, why you don't have a dragon, too."

Before I played GS - I was a developer on a few smaller MUDs. The #1 rule in room creation was "don't make them feel something". You couldn't say "The tablet in the corner of the room makes your heart beat a tick faster" - because for all you know they could be undead, or vampires, or whatever.

You can't implant thoughts into people's heads.

Unless of course you're the Borg.

YancyDC

If there isn't anything specifically saying what can and can't be in smile and act verbs, wouldn't her making a dragon that isn't there and a the aforementioned implied feeling be against policy? Dragons are in the game's lore, for chrissake, and some jackass sure as hell wouldn't be riding them like the Lone Ranger.

Insodus
02-10-2005, 02:18 PM
Exactly. But someone said they wouldn't mind a horse? Why would you not? We can't mount anymore for a reason. They took them out of the game, I don't remember exactly why, but they did. So why would she magically have one and no one else?

A good rule of thumb for "acts" is: What would this look like if the person I'm trying to impress did a "Look" command right now? Would they see a dragon? Would they see me flying off on a dragon? Would they actually feel as I say they'd feel, or think what I say they'd think?

Nope, they wouldn't see a dragon. Nope, they wouldn't see you fly off into the sunset. Nope, you can never know what another person will think, so don't start trying to tell them what they think.

02-10-2005, 04:20 PM
Yeah, we can't mount anything. Since parts of the world arn't in the game, does it mean they do not exist either? Dragons are not pets, it is documented. Horses (holy shit, check this one out) DO EXIST IN GS4!!11

Problem is.. where is the line? When IS it wrong to use act and smile to force a roleplay upon someone else? You say you are only forcing someone to see a dragon for 3/4ths of a second.. well, I suppose I could kill you and raise you in that same amount of time.. is that ok? How about I rape you in that amount of time.. still ok? How about I kill everyone in the room, rape them.. then raise them all up in that amount of time.. good? What if I had aliens come down.. kill me, kill everyone in the room, raise me, rape you guys and then raise everyone and then fly off.. still fine?

There is a right and wrong way to use smile/act. You choose to use it in the wrong way.. and were called out on it. If you didn't know about act/smile.. now you do.

Lesson learned I hope.

Horses don't exist in GS4? I've seen so many merchants with them and even a wedding where the bride rode down the isle on one (and I LOOKed.. and didn't see a horse).. The GMs do it for weddings all the time, making that special mood messaging. Sometimes it just takes a little suspension of belief.

But just you wait until they bring in the Pegasus travel system and all you evil scary people are flying around on lil fluffy white pegasus. I can't wait.. but then... this is a dream come true for me. ;)

CrystalTears
02-11-2005, 04:35 PM
GM's always do things that they don't allow players to do. I wouldn't rely on that reasoning (i.e. riding horses in GM weddings, making shimmering items and then not allowing players to use them in alterations, etc).

I think horses have always been this grey area as far as roleplaying. Horses DO exist in the realm, we just can't actively ride them anywhere. It can make roleplaying with them difficult since they are not available to interact with. However you can't shoot it down with the excuse that they don't exist because they do. Very much so.

Parkbandit

When you start down that slippery slope.. it's hard to stop.

Just don't do it. If you have to abuse smile and act for your roleplay.. you suck at roleplaying.

I played the game for years.. never had to abuse either of those verbs.

faiyth
02-11-2005, 05:22 PM
I think I can believe that horses and dragons exist in the game without abusing the smile/act verb... I don't think it's a if you believe they exist you suck at roleplay type of thing.

I think I probably have abused the act/smile verb before in regards to my kobolds. Like I use it to wink at them (since you can't wink at them otherwise) to kiss them on the cheek, etc etc.. but theres always a kobold in the room when I do it. I don't invent kobolds that only I can see. Though I think a character that sees things no one else ever sees would be a fun one to roleplay.. of course they'd be crazy.. or have many imaginary friends.

I think the difference is realizing that what your doing is likely going to get your character labelled a freak. I roleplay Faiyth as raised by kobolds, so she IS a freak.. I wouldn't expect people to think differently. So I'll kiss/lick/eat/bite/wink/snuggle the kobolds (who I otherwise couldn't interact with) all I want in smiles and acts.. see if you can stop me. :P heh.

Can I ask a serious question? Can you really not ride a horse in Elanthia? Could it be feasible to ride a dragon someday as well?

I don't really get the big screaming issue of the fundementals of her thoughts..I do understand the smile abuse problem. She could pretend..doesn't mean people wouldn't think she was crazy if she saw a dragon in front of her and no one else did.

I think the big issues are the oocisms that are so bad out there in Elanthia. In comparison to horses and dragons..which do exist..those are far more important to me.

There is a difference between pretending to believe in dragons.. and using the smile verb to create that which isn't there. You don't need to abuse the smile verb to illustrate her believing in dragons.

It's not a question of if they exist or could you ride them, but more the matter than you can't currently ride them or own them that people probably take issue with.

If I saw someone acting or smiling they were riding a horse or a dragon, or some other animal, and the animal wasn't in the room, I would just think they were deluded. Perhaps they worship Zelia.

Oh yes, there was drama. And I played a werewolf too. Yay! But I played more in the RhyDin Sparring Ring and then the Grand Central Arena. Yeah... I was in the little Japanese-worshipping clique that played characters from video games. Don't hate me, I grew up (a little) I swear!

gah, I've been reluctant to post because I hate to bump this thread... could we move this discussion to another thread please? Sahra is not an idiot, not at all, and she's already addressed the concerns that started this thread. For awhile now, this thread has been about something else entirely...

Hi, welcome to the mod team.

Err, actually it's quite about what it started with. Misuse of act/smile and the issues with completely freeform RP.

there's a whole other thread about the misuse of smile/act... so let's move it there.

Actually, this thread is fine where it is. It's a Gemstone Complaint and it's in Gemstone Complaints, specifically under Character Complaints because it's a complaint about the way a specific character is played. The comments being made are on-topic, since the problem with the character is the way the character is being roleplayed.

You'll often see threads that are talking about similar things. It's the way the boards work.

Referencing a specific person, it goes a specific place, thanks. And lo, I'm not even a mod!

Allow me to put it back on topic where I started it. Sahra is an idiot for needing to use smile for creative RP. There are so many ways to be creative in GS, use your god damn head. I wouldn't care one bit if it was...

Sahra smiles and pretends to get on what you can only imagine is a horse or dragon. She yells, "Off HouLong!" and runs away quietly making gallaping noises to herself.

(Monty Python anyone?)

That would be creative, and it would convey the point that her character is indeed retarded.

When you make up things that aren't there, or make up thoughts that other people aren't thinking, its just plain abuse.

Heh... Rhydin and the Medieval Tavern. I used to lurk mostly and then laugh with some of the other folks there, in IMs, about those three paragraph long entry macros.

I ignore people who insist they're vampires, wolves, and other weird things, because they're attention whores. What, being an elf wizard isn't special enough for you, because you are one in real life?

Yeah. I was one of those laughable types who had uber paragraphs of doom just to scratch the itty bitty booger off the nose or something.

Wow. I was so young then. Oh well, everyone has to start somewhere, hmm? I stopped playing in Rhydin when I went to Gemtone through AOL. Memories!

err...yeah, Sahra. About that dragon....

It's crazy on the Brigatta e-mail group right now too. At least she fixed it, and I must say, wether I agree with how she did it, at least she tried to be creative with stale scripts. From what I've seen of her redesigned ones they are better.

While I hate the dragon thing, I think she should get a thumbs-up for fixing it without trying to make some retarded argument about her roleplay being stifled, or something else lame like we've seen here before. Good for her.

I think there are so many worse things. Like.. blood drenched items with runes of death and decay. EW
