you need arcane symbols for scarabs

If you aren't going to learn spells, you need some way to get 403/404 to be a solid smith too.

Prob only 1x armor and drop pickpocketing if you want to be a better picker

Your build looks fine. You'll be able to open boxes your level with 2x pick/disarm fairly easily until around ... 40ish? By then you should have saved up enough TPs to get 4 ranks of spell research, letting you 2x the rest of the way to cap (though at cap you'll struggle with 1/3rd of your like-level boxes if you're only 2x pick/disarm by then). There will be some exceptions to this, like undead boxes being notoriously hard for their level, but you'll be able to figure that out as you go along.
If you want to be super safe with scarabs, 5-10 ranks of arcane symbols will make scarabs a breeze, provided you don't fumble a roll. You can still get by without any arcane symbols, but you'll want to disarm your scarabs twice to be safe (which loses a little value).
If you need to cut some TP fat, Derex has the right targets. You can always skimp on armor and pickpocketing is more of a roleplaying than lucrative investment with the current population numbers.

Part of the ?? was Stats. Wisdom will help you greatly in disarming down the road, and it's a little too far tanked. While your main growing stats are pushed higher.. Which is no big deal if you plan on buying a fixstat down the road but for right now I feel like even if your end goal is level 50 some of your main stats are higher than what they need to be while others are tanked.
I'd put armor on hold at least until you are caught up to only 1x.. you're already good for brig.. that will free up points for learning up to 404 slowly, or possibly 1.5x shield instead of just 1x... or even some dodge... and 2x CM has to be a killing as far as TP's go..you could probably taper that off just a bit to become more well rounded in other skills.
Also i guess society comes into play, with are you using spirit or stamina?

I know there’s a point where dodge isn’t all that useful when you have a tower shield and the right amount of shield training, but I forget what that point is. You might need to consider that. I think it’s something like 2x shield with a tower leaving you needing zero dodge vs 1x shield leaving you needing 1x dodge to make the same EVP difference. But I could be wrong. It’s been a decade since I used a shield.

All - I am so happy with the excellent feedback and help.
First, I will get to rank 10 in Arcane Symbols.
Second, I have been fighting a 6 sec rt with the Brig I am currently wearing. Will this ever go away or should I train down and just go with leather? Or should I train up and go with a stronger armor?
Third, I was of the understanding the combat maneuvers are huge and shield use is only important in stance d. Perhaps I was talking to the wrong person.
Finally, I have struggled somewhat with the stat calc.....I don't know why, but I did 20 years ago too.
What do you think my stats should be closer too?
Thanks again.....community here is great

What I can say is single both armor and shield use, stealing needs to go.. it's really not a practical skill, you might also consider lowing cman to about 1.75x training, that will free up a bit of points for learning arcane symbols and towards lock and trap lores. You will need to get 15 ranks in arcane to disarm a scarab on the ground you can disarm in current shape, which basically means without lore up you can disarm the max your skill normally and for bigger ones which you needed lore to cast up, you have to cast up lore to assuredly disarm it on the ground. Getting 20 ranks in arcane basically makes it so you can disarm any scarab on the ground regardless of lores up. To free up some more points you can lower perception and ambush about 5-6 ranks with being just as effective. No dodging? And what are the cman skills you currently know?

I agree with dropping the pickpocketing, that's just a waste of TPs unless RP is that important to you. Also I would recommend considering going the UAC route, I find it enjoyable as a rogue and they're basically the best class for it. It would allow you to consolidate your OHE/shield TPs which can give you more to spread around.
Second, I have been fighting a 6 sec rt with the Brig I am currently wearing. Will this ever go away or should I train down and just go with leather? Or should I train up and go with a stronger armor?
You only need 30 ranks of AU for brig if you're not factoring in spell hindrance, your 6sec RT at this point is likely from your encumbrance. I think brig is fine for a rogue if you want to primarily rely on hiding, ambushing and dodging. edit: Or brig now and work on getting into chain down the line for a bit more protection.

I don't believe this is correct. I feel that 10 ranks is all that is needed for safe and effective disarming of floor scarabs, and that's all I've ever heard from other locksmiths.

I will start saving up to be able to cast the elemental spells. I have a wizard friend who I thought could help me, but it sure sounds like I will need to focus on these more.
So I played literally 20 years ago. Funny story, but I was the original moderator here and the duelers arena. I know nothing about the combat maneuvers (cman) either didn't exist back then or really wasn't that powerful. I did complete some of the rogue guild, but felt like none of those skills actually became handy. What CMan's are handy to rogues? what contribute to these skills?
Sorry for my ignorance on some of these things....
should I 1x shield and 1x Dodge? Again, I didn't think shield contributed to my over DS when in Offensive Stance.
I have played the risky game of picking up scarabs BTW.

I really do not know much about UAC. Basically, you fight creatures with your bare hands and combat maneuvers? How do you get such a strong DS? I already dropped pick pocketing.

403 & 404 from a wizard or someone else is still useful, you just gain more to the size of lock/trap you can work on from your own lores vs someone else's. Sweep and subdue can be useful, and I suppose some of the cheapshots though I've not really used them personally. If you're worried about being a good smith, however, Lock Mastery is extremely useful in the long run but is on par with alchemy I'd imagine for how frustrating it can be to train.
As for CMANs, I struggle for cman points as a 3x smith but I like mobility, shadow mastery and punch mastery, personally (and feint, natch.)

UAC you're fighting with your hands & feet, but you can get UAC gloves/handwraps and boots/footwraps that can be enchanted, adding to your offense and defense, which are a little different from the normal AS/DS. You are able to use different attacks like jab, punch, kick and grapple, and using the right ones you tier up and land much stronger strikes. https://gswiki.play.net/Unarmed_combat_system
It must be the encumbrance. It really sucks to have a 6 sec AMBUSH RT. Is there something I am missing for encumbrance? What do you think about my current stats?
Ambush adds 1s to your RT. For your stats, post what you get from info start , I'm not the greatest mathing up your stats type.
edit: Forgot to mention, since it seems like it's important to you: UAC strikes will have a lower RT than traditional weapons, you can do an unaimed punch or jab in 3s RT, or aimed in 4, I think grapple too? Kick is a little slower. I primarily stick to jab and punch, with the occasional grapple for spice.

The problem with rogues is that TP's tends to be cheap in so many skills so it is very easy to dabble and water things down. My rogue is 71, he is a few ranks over fully doubled in picking skills, fully doubled in OHE and TWC, CMAN, S&H and I think about 1.6 in dodge. He has 4 spells and I only occasionally get a box I cannot handle, this will probably get slightly worse, so I may have to bring picking skills up some. Everything is a compromise, my rogue is primarily a hunter that picks, my friends rogues is primarily a picker that hunts so she is 3 times in picking skills. If you want to focus on hunting then set up skills to hunt and get what you can in picking, but it should be at 2X train in picking skills. I have 10 ranks in arcane symbols and have never missed a bug. I gave up shield to get TWC, and I think I am just over 1X in armor, I can hunt in breastplate but am using hauberk right now because I have some enhancive arm and leg greaves I like.

Do you ambush with TWC? Does this really beat up your DS? What type of weapons do you use in TWC? My GF is playing a ranger and I am encouraging her to go this way after she gets through the brutal first few levels of hunting rats.
I do want to be a hunter first with picking second. I just don't see enough picking out there to really level up.
I am afraid of becoming a dinosaur and not being able to hunt with a falchion and hiding and ambushing.

This is a pretty good way to put it overall. Until you're post-cap, if you try to be the best possible hunter and the best possible smith, you're not gonna be able to do both.

IMHO if you are not going to ambush as a rogue then you should be a warrior, as for rangers, yes, with their spells they make awesome ambushers. I hunt with dual short swords, but if RT is an issue then I would suggest maybe a short sword and dagger or main gauche, the gauche will help slightly in defense for the times you get caught in the open, but only a little. The phantom weighting and two weapons make a stun a lot more likely from ambushing. I do not hunt undead since they do not tend to stun much, he is in CoL but I am thinking about shifting him to GoS now that he is older and has enough stamina but to be honest the slight additional weighting from GoS is probably not as big of a deal as the additional AS from CoL.

I had a little more dodge than I thought and am just under double on ambush and CM, the other wonky numbers are caused by enchancives I think. It has been a while since I looked at him, been focusing on lock mastery and not hunting as much, might need to tweak some things it seems.

Nothing against Velfi's rogue, as his looks sweet, but I really like your training kutter. It looks like at some point you cut out double in ambush, combat maneuvers, and dogging to get your spells.
I never would have even thought about ditching the shield and going with two weapon combat.

I overtrained a lot in armor so that cost me a bunch of points there, but I have since stopped training in it and will just let it catch up while I get caught up in other things. I did not like the maneuver penalties from breastplate as a dual weapon ambusher, it might be my imagination but it just seems better in hauberk and hope you do not get caught out too much. I have to selectively hunt, the worst case scenario for me is spring from hiding, get a good hit and another critter walks into the room, then things get REALLY exciting. Breastplate would be awesome then. It is really hard to have a bad rogue, it is just in what you want to do.

No worries man, there are lots of ways to build your character, it just depends on what's important to you personally. The key (to me) is to optimize your character for how you want to play it. kutter's rogue looks like it would be a lot of fun to hunt with using TWC, I agree.

Ranged+hiding does have the advantage of not really needing cmans. Maybe just smastery.

To rolfards point, if you want the best compromise to picking and hunting then either ranged or UAC will likely be your best bet. I love UAC, I have a 47 train UAC wizard that is a blast, having said that I have an idea in my head of a rogue being from Assassins Creed, which means a blade. The first thing I would say is, figure out what you want your rogue to be, in your head, how do you see it, then train for that. I got 3 rogues to mid 20's in GS3 before I settled on my current one, it is a lot easier to fix mistakes now or change your mind.
I have never played with ranged, but it seems pretty potent.

Along with the RT and TPS side of going UAC an 8x medium shield will set you back about 15 million typically depending on spikes etc ... a 7-8x perfect falchion will set you back equally as much as far as silver..
Getting into 5x-6x wraps and boots maybe 3

According to the trainer from http://www.nitefallz.com/ you'll end up with 100/94/100/100/100/91/100/82/78/64 which isn't the worst but it's far from ideal at cap.
From messing with the stat maximizer on the same page, it looks like you could end up with all 100s except for a 91 in Aura and Inf at cap. However, you have to think about where you want your stats to peak. If you plan on playing all the way to cap, then it makes sense to have your stats optimize when you hit 100 as you get the best possible stat results. If you only want to play to 60 though, then having your stats peak earlier can make sense for what you want to do, at the expense of wasted longer-term gains and a fixstat down the road if you decide to change them.
Optimizing for 100 will result in some of your stats maybe not being as high as you'd like them as you're leveling though, such as str/agi/dex.

Range is fun but managing arrows can be tedious (particularly with blessed arrows), however, you get used to it after a while (if you write macros to do most of the work for you, it isn't bad). It's also pretty easy to find critters who can be one-shot to the eye, but at 20, you'll still have a lot of issues hitting your target so it's likely to be a lot slower going. A nice thing about range from hiding vs any other weapon is that once you're good enough at it, firing an arrow typically won't pull you out of hiding. Probably the biggest leg up that range has over any other weapon is that your AS is based on the enchant of the bow + the arrow, so if you're using a +25 bow and master fletched arrows (+25), you get the AS equivalent to a 10x weapon. But good luck killing anything in plate. It's doable, but it takes forever, so you'll need to be selective sometimes with where you hunt (in OTF, I just pass over the stuff that doesn't play nicely).
I can attest to TWC being a fun build. I used it for 40+ levels as an ambushing rogue from hiding with dual shortswords and I loved it, but it is going to be more TP intensive since you have to 2x whichever weapon you use and 1x-2x TWC in order to boost your offhand AS and your chance to hit. I switched from TWC to range I think in my 80's so I forget exactly what I put into it, but I think I went either 1.25x or 1.5x TWC and I did just fine. I had no issue hitting with my main-hand, so I put my higher enchant weapon in my offhand to make up the AS difference.
I never played with UAC but I hear it's a blast with ambush as a rogue.
As for combat maneuvers at cap as a range from hiding rogue, I use vanish (an absolute must for me), shadow mastery, mobility, toughness (1 rank is cheap and gives you an extra 15hp), disarm (defend against being disarmed), and cunning defense (defend against all maneuvers).
I'm not sure how much dodge you need with 1x shield use and a smaller shield, but it adds directly to your DS and your chance to dodge attacks, so it's an important skill to consider (especially with how cheap it is to train as a rogue).
For picking, like it's been said already, you can get by with 2x pick and 2x disarm (other than the random critters that tend to spawn obnoxiously difficult boxes), and if you can't afford 403/404 for a while, having a caster friend will suffice. Until I was closer to cap, I only ever trained 10 ranks of arcane symbols and I was able to disarm every scarab on the ground without any issues.
For stats, decide whether you want to cap your prime stats around 50 or at cap and go from there. There's a spreadsheet around here somewhere that will show you stat growth by level and allow you to assign points accordingly to accommodate your style. If you want to set your stats to make your exp gain ever so slightly faster and max your prime stats earlier, you'll likely need a fixskill down the road (25m or so), but if that doesn't bother you, you can make leveling a lot easier. If you set your stats to hit 100 at cap, then leveling will be a little more tedious and slow.

Do you have some recommendations? Let's just say I play until I am 70. I don't need the perfect character because let's be honest, being imperfect makes the game fun.
Someone recommended I increase wisdom....what should I adjust?
Do I need better Const? I am Guardian of Sunfist.
Is Aura even valuable to rogues?

Wisdom contributes to your spiritual TD, Aura to your elemental TD. Aura also effects how much spirit you have, and aura+wisdom determines mana for a rogue.
If you play with the spreadsheet, you can plug in your starting stats and see how they work out over the levels, and then tweak them from there for where you want your gains aimed at.
Going for sub-optimal stats to have more fun is not a bad idea necessarily, if you hunt your bounties pretty religiously you will easily end up with over 1m bounty points before cap, which you can use to buy a fixstat potion.
My advice would be to educate yourself on the stats on the wiki (https://gswiki.play.net/Main_Page) and use the resources/spreadsheet on the nitefallz site, you will understand how the stats affect you and can plan your character effectively.

you get an annual fixskill , the only way you get a FIXSTAT is through earning enough bps, or simucoins, paying silver/usd for one someone else has earned/bought.
after level 20 of course, so get it the way you like prior.

That is a rock solid hunting build and a good picking build, for now you should be able to get all your own boxes, but you will find in probably 20 trains or so it will get tougher, it is also hugely dependent on critters. Not sure why but undead always seem to have harder boxes and anything from the Citadel in Rivers rest has even harder for its relative age. if you are in the tower and need lore, do not be afraid to ask any of the rogues in there, most of the older ones will likely have the spell.
I am not even going to show you my stats, my rogue is a GS3 baby and I totally missed the free fixstat after I had been gone several years so his are jacked up, but it does make him a much better hunter at expense to other things. He is way more maximized for physical vs mental training points.

Some cman stuff on the list I'd recommend is doing weapn spec up to rank 3 with a weapon(4 and 5 take too many points even at higher trainings to be worth the investment). What I did to make up for that gap without the rank 4 and 5 there was invest 3 ranks in spin attack, with 3 ranks you will get +9 AS each time you attack with it and it is a low stamina cost maneuver. Surge of strength is always nice for more offensive attack and being able to carry more. Some l like it, some don't be I'm fond of shadow mastery. Cunning defense and evade mastery are good on the defensive end, I'd pick just one of them if any at all. Combat mobility a lot like and for your training it is a good investment for a long while, just I don't recommend having it past 90 trainigs(too much can knock you down and you auto stand and they knock you down again and repeat until you are stick in rt for a minute, my last 3 deaths hunting I attribute to this but just a side note once I got rid of it I'm on a 2 year stretch without dying hunting). And my favorite for when you get enough multi-ops training is you MUST get whirling dervish stance as a two weapon combat user. Being able to ambush and kill two targets at once never gets old.
I'll post my cman list just to give an idea what a post-cap rogue has for you if you ever reach there or for others readying this thread to compare to theirs.

So I took around 9 months off and looking to update my hunting. I am now level 44 and have been hunting the ship in Rivers Rest which has made me pretty wealthy 14 mil+ since level 34. I am not sure what else would have similar wealth in which I can pick there boxes. So basically looking for next place to hunt.
Also, haven't trained in any spells and I think I am going to need to since I only 2x train in picking and disarming

Swamp hags in Oteska's Haven and then Tomb Trolls in Marsh Keep. You might be able to jump right to Tomb Trolls. I remember them being pretty easy. Read up on the Swamp hags before going there. They do something weird, but I can't remember what. There's also a node there that I think creatures can come in, but they won't attack. Enjoy the rich hunting in River's Rest while you can.

Swamp Hags drop a kettle that will explode and cause lots of damage/death. I would not jump to tomb trolls at 44 unless you have a full spellup and will be willing to run like hell from the necromancers and golems and even then, it would be extremely risky. Remember getting rescued in the Rest is not always the easiest thing, that being said, it is my favorite spot in the game to hunt.

Kiramon are easy at that level, even if you're underhunting a little bit. If you want to stick around the landing, that's a decent option. If you can handle undead, Bonespear is there too, as well as the whatchacallit with undead in between. Somethingorother. Varunar?

I still say Rivers Rest, just stock up on crystal amulets and the landing is no further than Varunar with better loot. With that build if you can get blesses you can hunt the outer keep all day long, just do not think you will hide from the undead. Just have to be selective and totally ignore the snakes, no loot, only thing you get from them is skins. The good thing about bounties in the Rest to is NO ESCORTS, which now I do not mind so much actually, but then I hated them.

Pickpocketing is easier than ever! Nobody curses gems or carries needles anymore, nobody closes their containers unless they have an auto-closing container, and even if you get seen there's a 95% chance the person or persons who saw you are asleep at the wheel. I usually make more money resting than I do hunting, and my pickpocket isn't even halfway to cap. He gets seen constantly and nobody has ever actually noticed.

As it has been for all of its existence, it's just a matter of picking the right marks. Before it was picking the ones who you knew didn't curse their gems. Now it's picking the ones whose scripts stockpile gems but don't use a script to jar them. Or warriors who stockpile gems for sheaths. There are more of them than you'd think, considering pickpocketing is seen largely as a thing that doesn't happen anymore.
Even now if you run into one of my characters, it's almost guaranteed to have at least 200k worth of gems in an open container on it. I stockpile diamonds and rubies and emeralds for bounties and in case I get stuck in Zul Logoth without silver or forget that my bank account in a town wasn't enough to cover whatever item I was buying from a vendor, and fuck jars. And I should know better, seeing how much my pickpocket lifts off of other people.
Protip: Attend one of HoTA's bi-weekly afk-script fests. You will make all the money. Even if they weren't all afk, it's hyperspam for two straight hours even with their special squelch script running.

My metric for whether or not picking pockets is good is whether I make more money putting those points into picking pockets or twice as many into skinning. Picking pockets wins pretty soundly. If I were a ranger or being really careful about skins, it'd be a wash or come out ahead with skinning, but I'm not, and it doesn't. I'm still 1x/1x with the 2x picking pockets and skin decently.

If they choose to do that, it is their choice. Personally I killed a little rogue that got mouthy with my 88 train wizard because he was just being a brat, not in an RP way, just telling me to mind my own business, so, he got to die. If he had tried to RP his way out of it he likely would have been left alone. I only recently discovered that verb, prior to that I thought all you could do was accuse.

Well, as a younger thief, I'd recommend making friends with other thieves that can help back you up (or anyone willing to back you up, really.). Not in a PvP fashion, but RP wise, and for the stealing bonus. Also, +PP enhancives are fairly cheap and not too hard to find in player shops. In fact I have tons myself that I could sell.
As for my thief, the attacker is the one that will end up asking themselves whether it was worth dying over a few silvers.
I think you and I may have a different idea on what is "good money" then.
If you are trying to maximize your XP gain, then you will have to rest at a node. Pickpocketing IS good money, if you consider that you are making 0 silvers when resting, otherwise.
Granted, I ultimately think stealing should be more of an RP thing than purely to make money. No matter how good you are, you will get caught, which opens up the way for good RP.
And honestly, don't take my original comment too seriously - It was largely in jest. I understand that pickpocketing is not for most people, and is especially tough at lower levels. But I also hate how it ALWAYS gets recommended to drop, when a person SHOULD bloody choose it, if they want to RP a thief. If it's fun for you, that is ultimately more valuable than most things you could train in.
You'd think training PP is a mutant build, anymore...

If you are trying to maximize your XP gain, then you will have to rest at a node. Pickpocketing IS good money, if you consider that you are making 0 silvers when resting, otherwise.

Well in your case, and I am sure if my rogue was trained in it as well, the only person that might see you would be another rogue that is close to your train.
I have no issue with the mechanic being in the game, it can be a lot of fun. There is someone, and I forget his name right now, who used to try and pickpocket in the tower, not a very smart place to try. We caught him and in the process of dealing with the situation I meant to just cut his leg off but it turned out I killed him. He was a good sport about it and even sat and talked to me while I served my time in the stocks, I had never done the the stocks so I wanted to see. So I see a lot of potential for fun and RP from it. I would never discourage someone from doing it, I would say that most of the suggestions here to not do it were an attempt get the most efficient hunting build you can at younger trains when TP's are tighter and still be an efficient picker. You know as well as anyone that it is easy to get lost in skills since most of them are pretty darn cheap for a rogue.
I wish I could remember that guys name, it started with a C I think. A lot of people disliked him but he was always nice to me.

I used to catch people all the time, as a rogue or not. I always had a cursed diopside or so, and when I noticed stuff missing I'd look around. Pretty easy to spot a thief when they don't have stealth put and are constantly putting items away.

So lack of knowledge on blessed items......
How do I tell if an item can be blessed? Again, I swing with 2 weapons, so what type of weapons should I use?
I imagine I should go to Dreaven for blessings?

If I recall correctly pretty much anything that does not have a flare is now blessable and there might even be some that can if it is in the script slot I think. For sure if it can be enchanted by a player then it can be blessed.

Players can enchant flaring items!
Weighted crap can be blessed now, and so can anything that could be before with adequate Cleric ranks or Voln steps. I believe weighted items become impossible to bless after Heavy weighting.

That's true, flaring can be enchanted now, my bad. But flaring cannot be blessed, unless maybe it is in the script slot, I would have to check for that. I know that the number of swings from a bless go down dramatically on anything over heavy, someone did research on it somewhere.

It depends on the flare, yeah. Some of the newer ones are different. The basic old ones, fire, cold, etc, cannot be.

So my two shitty weapons:
You remove a lime green vultite falchion from in your weapon sling.
(Change your default item by selecting ready list.)
>ready shield
You remove a maroon imflass longsword from in your weapon sling.
(Change your default item by selecting ready list.)
should be blessable now?

If they are plain magic metals, they always were. You just need someone of the appropriate spell rank(40 cleric ranks) or voln step.

So basically, dreaven can do it. Interesting, I always thought it was more of a challenge with blessable weaons.

Well if needing 40 ranks of cleric spells is more of a challenge, then yes it is but not all that hard to get blesses now. If in the landing go to TSC and if there is not a cleric then there will be a Voln master almost certainly. Of course you can always get pure potions too and pour it if you need some swings to finish a hunt.

Heh, you don't even need to be level 40. If you're a cleric training for the highest CS from the start, you'll have 40 cleric ranks at level 20.
