That guy is insane. I've always personally hated the chinese character tattoos, just because a million people have them and you can't do huge variations on them.

As the proud owner of 14 tattoos I can tell you that research, communication and trust are VERY important when getting a tattoo. I don't care how much you say that you can get it removed, the point is that you have to consider what you want, talk to the tattoo artist when you are ready for it and work with them to get it exactly the way you want. I have 2 kanji on the back of my neck and I know exactly what they mean. I was good friends with not only all the artists where I had my tattoos done, but I was also good friends with the owner. I saw more people than I wanted to come in and get a tattoo for the sole reason that they thought it looked cool.. no meaning or purpose.. just because it looked cool. I don't have anything against people with no tattoos.. but I am irritated by people who get them just because they look cool or because it's a trend. I think it's damn funny when someone gets a tattoo that "looks cool " and then they find out it means something they would have never gotten if they HAD known.
