Some of you know that my husband, Jake, is a teacher. Last November, one of his students got stabbed by his mother's boyfriend. What happened was that the boyfriend was attacking the mom. This thirteen year old kid who is like 4'10'' tried to protect his mother, and he got stabbed in the process. Some people in his apartment complex found him wandering around in a daze with the knife blade sticking out of his chest, where it had BROKEN OFF during the struggle.

His mother died. The guy who did the stabbing is set to being trial tomorrow. The really shitty part of all this is that the kid had only lived with his mother for about eight months. Since he was three, he had lived in NY with a foster family that had been trying to adopt him. Instead, his mother tried to get him back, and won.

Now that his mother is dead, his father is unknown and none of his blood relatives want to claim him, the most logical thing for him to do would be to go back to his foster family, right? That's where the kid WANTS to go. They WANT to adopt him. This is the family he's known for ten of his years.

Instead, the stupid fucking Navajo Nation is trying to sue for custody. Because his mother was Navajo, they say that the tribe has a claim to the kid. Tell me, what the fuck are they going to do with him? Stick him in a trailer on the reservation to live in squalor? I grew up an hour away from the Navajo reservation and used to drive straight through it all the time on the way to Lake Powell, Colorado, etc. It's no pretty picture.

Alcohol is illegal there, but it's the most-abused substance next to methamphetamine. 60% of girls on the reservation have sexual contact with a family member by the age of 14. The average adult doesn't work. I can't imagine why anyone would think it's a great place to thrust a kid who already has a safe, happy, secure home that he is FAMILIAR with, especially after the trauma of watching his mother get stabbed to death.

Tell me, what the fuck is wrong with these people?

However, I think you get free money from the government if you're part Native, so that's pretty cool.

He's 13 so hopefully the judge or whoever rules on the case will allow the kid to speak for himself on where he wants to go. Of course they will place him where the courts decide in the end but hopefully this doesn't turn into a fiascle just because he's Native American instead of a young boy who needs a home, family and love. Situations like this are so complicated even though the answer is right in front of everyone's face.

That poor kid, having to go through that ordeal. I hope the Judge takes pity on him and asks him where he wants to go. Let him go back to the family he knows and loves.

Maybe you missed the part where his mother took him away from a loving foster home to bring him into an abusive relationship where his life was in danger.

I agree with Skeeter to a point, actually. I have a big problem with single mothers who parade boyfriend after boyfriend through their children's lives with seemingly no regard for how that can affect the child, either emotionally or physically (or both in this case). I don't think that means single mothers shouldn't be allowed to date, but your children should always-always-always come first, no matter what.

I also have a tendency to think that if this guy was a wacko knife-weilding psycho, he would have shown it in some fashion (perhaps more tame outbursts leading to the stabbing) before this incident. People that are unstable or questionable like that should not, in my mind, be allowed to be AROUND the kid or kids, much less LIVING with them. It's tough to blame a dead person, but I do place some fault on the mother for exposing the kid to that garbage.
