A pair of blockbuster reports from the New York Times and the UK’s Observer released Saturday explained the scope of the problem: Cambridge Analytica collected the data not only of the approximately 270,000 users who agreed to take Kogan’s personality quiz but also their friends, thus harvesting information on tens of millions of people without their knowledge or permission.

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign also used Cambridge Analytica — according to the Center for Responsive Politics, his campaign paid the firm $5.9 million during the 2016 election. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign and Super PACs supporting him paid the firm millions of dollars as well.

The reports about Facebook have sparked widespread backlash and the company’s efforts to minimize the situation have fallen short. Facebook has tried to explain that what happened technically doesn’t count as a “data breach” and has hired a digital forensics firm to audit Cambridge Analytica. But it’s sort of too little, too late.

Don't even fully understand this new scandal/crisis. Seems some crazy billionaires started this company, put Bannon in charge, stole data, targeted folks with a well honed propaganda and go around the world offering their services (which include Ukrainian hookers and too good to be true financial deals) to blackmail pols and win elections.

This is the kind of thing they blame Soros for, but actually it was republicans doing it. Can't make this shit up.

I can't even follow it anymore; it's become so convoluted.

Who can follow any of this? There's so much shit hitting the fan it's impossible to see. I wonder who's running the country amidst all this chaos? Hopefully (fingers crossed) there actually is a deep state keeping the wheels on this miscarriage.

EXCLUSIVE: Cambridge Analytica bosses say they “ran all the digital campaign” for Donald Trump - including potentially illegal activities. https://www.channel4.com/news/exposed-undercover-secrets-of-donald-trump-data-firm-cambridge-analytica … #CambridgeAnalyticaUSA

This is really great news for trump. CA is calling him a puppet.

He said: “They don’t understand because the candidate never, is never involved. He’s told what to do by the campaign team.”
“So the candidate is the puppet?,” the undercover reporter asked.
“Always,” replied Mr Nix.

Man this shit just keeps getting worse. We already knew the troll farms were working. Even argued about "how could 13 Russians make millions of people vote for trump".

Turns out It was way bigger than that. Seth Abramson has a good thread on it. Here is one tweet from the thread:

9/ Despite this, Trump lost with voters. He ended up in the White House by 40,000 votes—40,000 voters micro-targeted by Cambridge Analytica *and* Russian propagandists in a way that makes one wonder how the Russians seemed to have the same data as Trump's Cambridge Analytica did.

Senators from both parties aggressively questioned Zuckerberg in his first ever public appearance in front of Congress over recent controversies - from data privacy to Russian disinformation. They demanded new detail about how Facebook collects and uses data and elicited assurances that it will implement major improvements in protecting personal privacy. The threat of greater regulation - not just of Facebook, but of the entire technology industry - hung over the first of two days of congressional hearings.

Apparently Cambridge got all the information from some 87 million users. Even private messages.
