Not sure if this is the right spot to post this but....
Ok I do enjoy using stormfront and have been for quite some time. For some reason every session my computer freezes and this occurs only when I'm gaming using Stormfront.
Questions:
1. Is anyone else experiencing or have experienced it?
2. Is there a remedy?
Info:
This occurs on my PIII IBM ThinkPad A22M running Windows XP (Service Pack 2?). I usually run Trillian, Norton AntiVirus, & Norton Firewall while I game.
I'd rather not go back to using Wizard but it does seem more reliable.

Are you using scripts? If you are where are they being stored. This can be an issue in freezing Stormfront

Actually I am using scripts and they have mysteriously dissappeared as of the other day. I looked around to find them and it showed they were being stored on my hard drive.

If they get over 1028KB then it stops storing them on the server.

If your links are on in SF it sucks up a ton of memory / speed.

Hotlinking on words and such. You can go a lot quicker without it and still use the decent features...then turn it on at merchants and quests.

Another reason why the Wizard reigns above all.

yeah it runs much smoother on a less technilogically advanced machine. i'd love to use it at work, but i cant get my scripts to work on wizard, so i'm stuck with SF, which brings my whopping 200mmx box to a halt

Well the above problem still exists and is now happening more frequently. I've upgraded my memory to 512MB.
This occurs in Wizard as well. Especially when I hunt or runt a script like .cast or something.
the only programs I'm running while playing are norton firewall, antivirus, and sometimes Trillian or AOL IM etc...
Really pissing me off. Any help out there in Forum land? :?:

Are you sure you're free of adware/spyware, etc? That's the only thing I can think of that might be causing the problem on both the wizard and Stormfront.

Well I've updated CW Shredder and it ran clean thank goodness...
I ran spy bot and it keeps coming up with DSO Exploit as a problem. I guess this must be the issue.
Anyone ever experience this?

Yeah. DSO exploit comes up a lot. It's some Microsoft tracking thingee, I think. You can probably Google it and find out more. Just to be on the safe side, I'd run a virus check, and spysweeper, and probably AdAware. Be sure to update the databases before running if you have these programs resident on your system. I tend to over-protect. ;)
You can also install Spyware Blaster to keep a lot of spyware, adware off your system. It's worked wonders for me. :)

Do a Control-Alt-Delete, just for the heck of it, and post what's running.

There's also a program called HijackThis! that will generate a list of all the stuff in the current Windows startup process, current running programs, and a lot of other stuff like the search hooks that spyware tends to latch on to.
The program will also allow you to remove those things, if you wish, but that isn't recommended unless you know what you're doing, or know for certain that something on the list is spyware or malware. Most people run the program, generate the list, then post it to a forum for other people that know what all those things are so they can determine what might be causing trouble.

LOL I can't run Norton AntiVirus. My puter keeps freezing during the process... Woo Hoo!
Maybe I should just start from scratch and just clean re-install windows. too bad I'll lose all the software that i don't have copies of etc...

Nooo. Run Norton in Safe Mode. :)

Hijackthis, Adaware, and Spy Sweeper is a good start. Then you can try Panda antivirus.

Refresh my memory on how to get in safe mode?

Restart your computer, then just keep hitting F8 until you get a black screen with 3 choices on it. Choose Safe Mode (I think it's 3, but it'll tell you).

DSO exploit is a worm from my understanding. If you're patched, it shouldn't cause any problems, but I removed it manually using the registry keys on a few computers here. Better safe than sorry.
Sorry I couldn't be any more help, but I would definitely get it off your machine.
-Melissa
edit to add: if you remove it via spybot it comes back. Again, if you're patched, not a real problem, more a nuisance of having something you don't want running in the background.

I'm now pondering on taking it in to COMPusa for diagnostic and repair. I've about to give up hope!
Could it be my hard drive is bad?

Possibly. Just a DSO exploit isn't gonna knock you out. All those programs I suggested have free versions.

I'm pretty sure it is the hard drive. I've downloaded all those freeware programs you mentioned and my puter is pretty clean besides the DSO Exploit.
My computer only freezes when I run a macro or a script or occasionaly when I scroll down to read a web docs before they finish loading.
Does that sound like the symptoms of a bad hard drive?
