View Full Version : A I the only real new player in Gemstone?

Hello! This is my first post n this ancient Forum! As I noticed, this placed seemed smaller and older than the other forums I post in such as Maidens of the Kaleidoscope. I just discovered GDIV in like a month ago and I a pretty impressed `bout it! I never knew a game about words on a black box had me more interested than most Triple A titles. I came to Gemstone as a refuge and a curious guy. See, I like old things, old games, old books, old people and old knowledge. I wanna buy a full suit of armor one day even though there is no point to it and a person with more money would rather buy a Mansion or a Ferrari. But here I am, playing a game that is twice as old as me even though there is Runescepe, World of Warcraft or whatever. I came here from a video from Tolarian Community College.
Video in question: http://nazr.in/10pw
So that is how I discovered Gemstone. Now, since mid-September a clueless, Red-haired, Grey-Eyed Human Warrior named Hlendril is running around with no I dea what to do. Even goin` around in Silverwood for questions does not give much answers due to the complexity of this game. Now, I ask this question if I am the only one new here. Most likely its going to be a returning player who played Gemstone IV when Daria Morgendorffer was still a thing (God, those were the good days) and was born in the 80s, late 70s. So really, I a walking among giants. I am with people who played this game straight for 25-30 years straight and some people who returned after 15 or 20 years of absence. AM I the only new guy here? Should I be intimidated? Hec, I`m a F2P for crying out loud and I`ll be that way `till I graduate College and find a decent job. So what do ye veterans have to suggest and say?
Anyway, it is an Honor being part of such a old community that has stood the test of time. I hope it gets bigger and better!

Welcome. You're certainly in the minority as a new player, but I've run across several in recent weeks. I'd expect this:
- You'll be lost for a month and a half. We all were.
- After that time, you should have some idea what you're doing and what type of character you want to play
- You'll make some friends and start having fun
It's tougher at very low levels now; I find most people are just trying to grind them out, and there's not a lot of hunting partners. It gets much better around 20 or so, when the time to level starts to take longer.
If you need help, feel free to look up Rencelas in game. Are you using Lich? https://gswiki.play.net/Lich_(software) That's the best way to contact people in general.

Well thanks for the reply. Now I am not using Lich, though as I don't think such a basic class like a warrior may need it but I will try it. Now, my favourite part about the game is certainly the Roleplay aspect. It's so fun to just let you're character grow with the character grow and interact, develop and it's just so fun. In fact, Roleplaying for me is my favourite part of the game and it kinds of caused me to not gain experience because I am too busy looking for someone to RP with. Unfortunately nobody accompanied me at hunting that much and the people I wish to RP with are all capped and too busy with the current storyline wherein my character's level is too low. Who are the only novices out there I can meet? Is there a way to have a get together of people like me?

The best part of Gemstone for me was when I was first exploring. Enjoy.

I've encountered two different new players in the past couple weeks in Ta'Vaalor. Maybe there are always a few new players running around and I just haven't noticed. Hope so.

It is unfortunate that new characters start in different towns, but it's a left over from a bygone era where Gemstone was too crowded and spreading out the population was highly desired. Your odds of running into a new player is remote, but it is possible. Some of the returning players haven't played for so long they may as well be new players, so there's always that hope too.
Good luck in your quest.

Lich isn't really based on what class you play, some of the extra scripts you can download can be used more by certain classes though. The base lich has some really useful features if nothing else than the chat option in game and the overlay map you can use. It really helps with finding your way around. I would recommend not using go2 until you get very familiar with your surrounding. Go2 is a movement script that can take you to any location in the game automatically.
The chat function is really the biggest draw. It will allow you to get answers from out of character questions in real time without having to find a mentor. Maybe stay away from the lnet channel and focus more to prime channel, lnet can get very off GS topic where prime is mainly regarding GS related things.

Welcome aboard!
As a new player I had a slow time finding folks to group with because I was loathe to just ask others if they wanted to group, many players are lone wolves and I did not want to impose.
What I did was set a key to: smile and waves a cheery "safe hunting!" as he passes by.
I would hit the key and then move on. That way I would get folks to approach me if they were interested in RP or a hunt partner, it let them know I was approachable without appearing aggressive or forward, and it cut down on negative replies.
It is good to see another roleplayer joining the ranks, good luck and have fun!

I have lockers full of 4x gear when you are ready for them, give Askip a thought on the global crystal amulet channel (wear/rub a crystal amulet, ESP DEFault GLObal).
Also, do not let the learning curve bother you. I am still finding out about things I did not know. The game is that huge, which is part of the attraction for me.
:D
I came back recently after a break of two decades, and it probably took me at least a month to even get my bearings. I had to relearn everything. I imagine starting from scratch at this point would be arduous. My only advice, as others have said, if you haven't yet done so, install lich, narost, and all the useful scripts for it. They make the game much more manageable and immersive imho. And I say this as another warrior. Lnet (part of lich) alone is worth it, as there you can ask questions, etc.

I'd add that the GS Wiki is very good. It's been a great help to me since returning from a decade-long break (hello to anyone who might've known Loxik). Check it out: https://gswiki.play.net/Main_Page

Wow, who knew this thread will go to 2nd page real fast! Guess people now know who Hlendril is. Well anyway is using Lich easy? Does my sistem think it might cause a virus? Also how do you guys promote Gemstone to anyone? I heard that Tolarian video was good. Is anyone here planing to be a YouTube or twitch streamer? Thanks for the replies!

Whirlin has a few youtube videos on GS4.
https://www.youtube.com/user/LordWhirlin
Also, Lich is very useful for when you die and need a rescue. Can pretty much avoid decaying which comes with death string (slow xp absorption).
Before level 10, there's no penalty for dying. So you can depart right away and there's no ill effect.

1. Get Lich
2. Don't forget 1
3. Remember 2
4. Consider upgrading to a basic subscription, the $15/mo one. The limits on F2P will prevent you from being able to access a lot of things that make this game what it is.
Amerek

If you switch from F2P to subscription, you can't go back to F2P with that character - just a heads up. But I agree with Methais, $15 subscription is the best way to go.

Welcome, you'll surely have your hands full, my advice
1... What's wrong with your "A" key, you'll likely need it as a warrior to type attack
2. For someone in college your paragraphs read like the person that wants to send me a million dollars from India. I'd work on that too to play a text game.
all teasing aside on those notes, I really hope you enjoy it and I feel like a warrior is a good starting class

Well I am sorry for the crude words my keyboard sucks and I am typing all this in my cellphone. That being said, is it really true it takes 3-5 years to level to 100? Even as a subscriber? Does that time also take into consideration the Gift of Lumnis that happens every week? Man, I gotta subscribe. We really need to work on advertising and promoting the game too.

Depends how often you play. 1k to 2k experience per hour is pretty standard for someone hunting/rest to clear/hunting/etc. It's about 7.5 mil experience to reach level 100 so that's between 7500 hours and 3750 hours. If you play for 2 hours a day, even at 2k experience an hour, that's about 5 years. 4 hours a day and it's a mere 2.5 years.
This doesn't include Lumnis or RPAs so it could be a bit faster.

Well thanks for the information! I really thought it would take such a long time as stated by Whirling. I suppose the greatest hinderance to leveling up is me because I want to Roleplay. Also I often skip Adventurer's guild tasks that involve Gems and Skinning animals because I am not too good at them.
One thing I also noticed is why is GS more active at night than day? Are MUDs something people usually play at night?

Welcome! It's more populated at night basically because we all have day jobs :)
I recommend going on hunts with the Drakes Vanguard, they go out every night at 8 or 8:30-- it's always a good time, and it is a great way to meet people, and learn how and where to hunt. If you're in Landing, listen on the thought net (obtain, wear, and rub a crystal amulet) for announcements from Svardin.

Oh, are you a Game Master/Moderator? Good to hear from ya. I do notice most players are rather older than most gaming demographics. Now, with that being said does Simutronics have any plans to advertise the game to a new generation of players? Will we expect another video like the one that got me introduced here a month and a half back? What new deals are you offering to new and returning players to get them interested. I know it will be tough to advertise a text-based game but hey, people still play Dungeons and Dragons right?

I'm sorry if i came off harsh.. the things I'd do as a young warrior if you can swing the 15 dollars to pay a sub fee.. i'd start to make sweet with every empath in tsc.. I'd spend as much time as I could learning guild skills(can do this after you sub). I'd then start talking with people in helden hall (there are many houses but that particular one caters towards warriors and it's right outside of the guild). All of those included with the information about lich will give you ample chances to meet people and role play. One thing that i don't see mentioned is that you should think about the future and the stat cruncher will help with that before you are level 20 http://www.nitefallz.com/

Okay now I understand. Well, I`m still interested about the future of the game. I wish more thoughts are put to promoting this hidden gem. Perhaps if Simu tried to contact the D&D players and some decent Youtube channels without a cancerous fanbase maybe we can bring this community back to the size it used to be. It would be tough advertising a text-based game but nostalgia is big business now. maybe with all the reboots and nostalgia pandering, Gemstone has a chance to bring back old players and some new ones like me.

The game's population is down dramatically from it's heyday of the early 2000's. Ever since then it's been on a gradual decline. Over the past couple of years the population has been growing, it's probably now where the game was 5 or 6 years ago.
Here's a thread where I keep track of the game's population on a daily basis. Daily meaning whenever I remember and feel like updating it.

Sometimes the population of the game reached 2000+ people, although that was during peak times and died down during non peak hours. I used to see less than 100 people on a couple of years ago, but that was in the wee hours of the morning. I don't think I usually see fewer than 100 on now. The lowest population prime time wise was probably in the 300s. I don't think they game was necessarily more toxic back then.

The game used to have more people and a lot less area. So it was more in one place. Town Square used to be packed. Areas that no one even rests in anymore used to have a little community. Now the folks still around are spread all over.

Fastest 0 to cap I know of was the original Ryjex, who did it in around 5-6 months. But he played all day from work and then some more when he got home, and it was also during the time when Kenstrom was handing out RPAs like candy. It's definitely possible to cap in a year if you push hard for it and are ok with GS being your life. That said, there's no end game in GS like there is in most other MMO type games. You'll pretty much be killing the same capped creatures forever and leveling up your other skills once your main skills are maxed.
Well thanks for the information! I really thought it would take such a long time as stated by Whirling. I suppose the greatest hinderance to leveling up is me because I want to Roleplay. It usually only takes a couple minutes to fry, and a lot more minutes to absorb that exp, which is your best time to RP. Then when your head is near empty, run out and kill things for a few minutes and fill back up, then repeat this process 5823470298472047209 times. If you want to be a good skinner, train first aid and/or survival. Don't sacrifice any essential skills for it though.
One thing I also noticed is why is GS more active at night than day? Are MUDs something people usually play at night?
Depends. A lot of people can play from work, a lot can only play after work.

I just gotta get this out my chest but I feel legitimately at awe to be with this community. It lasted for 30 years. I don't think there are any games out there that will compare to the age of this game and still boast half s thousand players at peak. I find it impressive. Still, the population has really decreased over time as people got bored reading and typing and people cared less about social roleplay and more on statistical jerk fest in who is better than the other. I don't mind the lack of endgame content though as I just want someone to roleplay with. Such a thing will only happen if the population ever increases in size. I don't know if five years from now the community may have shrunk or expanded or if all the most prominent characters stay but one thing is certain: This is one incredible community spanning entire decades in age. Gemstone is a niche to hide from this world. A refuge, a enclave to hide in when time catches up. If Simu won't advertise the game then let us do it ourselves. Stream it, post videos and blogs just go crazy. Let this hidden gem shine bright like a diamond.
I am sorry for the rant. I do feel overwhelmed on what world I just stepped in. This game pretty unique as that the community is what defines it. Some people say that 15 a month is too expensive for a text based game and although I do think Simu must rethink how it charges people or how much benefits a subscriber gets, I'd honestly give that money to Gemstone than spend it on some loot crate and key wherein no matter how much I spend, I'll still have a chance to get something crappy which will force me to spend more.

Wait till your first event, they have loot crates for $$.
To you other point, why can't you have both? Bigger stats and RP. These two aren't mutually exclusive. I like having my character gain power and I enough playing out my character's actions. Just like real people like new and shiny things, so can your character.

I still have some questions. Suppose I try to be a subscriber but I canceled the subscription or did not pay the subscription fee anymore, will I lose my character forever? Also, what is your opinion on spell using warriors. What level do you advise I start learning my warrior spell circles?

Yes, you can cancel your subscription and your character(s), inventory and all achievements will be just as you left whenever you decide to reactive, even decades later.
Warriors don't have have their own spell circles, but they do have access to minor spiritual and minor elemental spell circles that are shared among a few professions. It is very expensive in training points though, most would not advise learning any (or more than a couple) before level 100 cap. It is more of a postcap or far postcap goal without gimping your warrior in other core areas.

Definately rare to find genuine new players but you're not the only one. I helped a real new player about a month ago in the landing. Spent about an hour explaining and giving tips and a bit of basic gear. Glad to have you interested in this archaic, relic of a game. Dust it off and explore. There is a lot to discover. If you like reading up and learning game mechanics or finer details check out the wiki. And I can recommend installing lich and some basic scripts once you get your bearings. These forums are indeed the best place still to get information but there are also plenty of mean trolls so prepare to have a thick skin.

I can jump in here: your account will still be useable but it won't include the features subscribers get it will just downgrade to a f2p account.
Warriors are not designed to cast spells at all. If you are interested in spells and melee strength consider a highbrid (semi) class like ranger, paladin, bard, monk. Warriors are pure physical/melee.

If you cancel a paid account you can't access it at all until you start paying again. But the account should still be around in the future if you decide to reactivate.

Is that right? Are you saying that an account can switch from f2p to sub and back again?
I thought once you took an f2p account to a subbed account you couldn't go back to f2p.

I still have some questions. Suppose I try to be a subscriber but I canceled the subscription or did not pay the subscription fee anymore, will I lose my character forever? Also, what is your opinion on spell using warriors. What level do you advise I start learning my warrior spell circles?
You cannot go back to F2P, but his question above was if he was a paid subscriber what would happen to his character (it would resume where he left it as he left it) upon returning/re-activating.

So I can return back to my character any time I want suppose I subscribe again. What about character purges? It is said if a character is not played in six months the system will remove the character from the database

They don't purge names, like ever.

The only way you're at risk of losing an account is if you do something stupid and get perma-banned or they close down the servers forever. They don't purge accounts.

Even when they did do a purge, they didn't hit character names above like level 5 or 10, and I think it was only ones from AOL days. They haven't done one in a long time though.

Well thats confusing, the policy of the game said it purges characters, its even at the wiki.

Well what explains the statement thats says if a character is not used in six months it will be removed from the data?

It is just to cover themselves.

What do you mean by "cover themselves"? If characters don't disappear then why do returning players always start anew,?

We don't always start a new. My mains were created 15 to 20 years ago. I take years off from the game but come back, open the accounts, and pick up where they left off

Reserving the right, not that it already isn't enshrined in other places.
Why do you think returning players start anew? Most do not, or they dip their toes in after extended breaks with free accounts now perhaps before activating their paid accounts.

I took a 7 year break ('08-'15) and my accounts were exactly as I left them when I returned.

A lot of people cash out when they quit, not expecting to return. And then they end up returning. Sometimes they're able to buy their character back, sometimes they can't so they either buy another character or start from scratch.
Another thing to keep in mind is a lot of "official" information is outdated and Simu just lets it rot on the website, unless they got their shit together sometime recently and finally cleaned it up, which I doubt.
Gemstone in a nutshell: Really awesome game, but could still be 47320478390x better if it weren't run by a company that's run by very stupid people.

One can only wonder if Gemstone was run by Wizards of the Coast... Or Jagex.

yes. I use it for login rewards, otherwise I wouldn't recommend using it for actually playing.

Don't play in the browser if you can help it. Stormfront is my favorite. Some people use Wizard, but I don't really see the upside besides nostalgia.
