With the sad death of legend Johnny Cash, it got me to wondering what kinda sad songs really effect me or make me think.
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony is definately a "low" song, but it always seems to uplift me - it keeps me fighting in a way.
Live - Lightning Crashes, a song based on a real life event of a mother dying during childbirth - the lyrics and the emotion are just...breathtaking...
"lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door
lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now, to the baby down the hall
oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it.
lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored iris,
presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide"
There's so many others as well: Beth Orton - Stolen Car, Ocean Colour Scene - The Waves, REM - Everybody Hurts, U2 - With or Without You.
What pushes your sad buttons musically?

Amazing Grace and Going Home played on a bagpipe, The Theme from Schindler's List, In the Living Years by Mike + the Mechanics, Paranoid Eyes by Pink Floyd,
The Show Must Go On by The Alan Parsons Project, Everything I own by Bread.
I can't get though any of those pieces of music without tears, espeically now.
My dad passed away last month, and I'm the oldest child. Even though my dad still has living brothers and sisters, the "older" generation is gone in my imediate family. That's something that takes a long time to get used to.
Ray
You sheltered me from harm.
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, Set me free
The finest years I ever knew
were all the years I had with you
I would give anything I own,
Give up me life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own,
just to have you back again.
You taught me how to love,
What its of, what its of.
You never said too much,
but still you showed the way,
and I knew from watching you.
Nobody else could ever know
the part of me that can't let go.
I would give anything I own,
Give up me life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again.
Is there someone you know,
you're loving them so,
but taking them all for granted.
You may lose them one day,
someone takes them away,
and they don't hear the words you long to say
I would give anything I own,
Give up me life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again.

Most of the songs from the musical "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon". I cry like a baby.

OMG yeah! Its been an age since I saw that movie. Jane Sibbery - It can't rain all the time - the theme from The Crow always gets me too.

The Verve Pipe- Freshman
Pearl Jam- Jeremy
The song that will ALWAYS make me cry, no matter where I am when I hear it, is Tupac's Dear Mama. Good thing it's an old song and it's not macho enough to have lots of rotation on the rap stations.
Maybe I just relate to it. It's Tupac's apology for making his single mother's life a lot rougher as he was growing up. I think I start cracking when he sings about hugging his mother from a jail cell.
Oo, or wait, tie! This one doesn't make me cry immediately, but it's still a freakin' sad song. Tupac's Baby Don't Cry. About an eighteen year old girl with three kids who gets raped and the singer is trying to comfort her.
Alot of rap music is pure crap, odes to the rappers themselves, and how many bitches they've got and how many guns... but those two up there are really good. The rhythm, the well-chosen lyrics, the emotion behind 'em that comes through.
Go out an' get 'em and cry!

I have a couple of songs that just get me, since my father died.
The day of his funeral, I had been dreaming about him, that he was still alive..it was a wierd dream. When my alarm went off, Paul Simon's song Father and Daughter was on. The song said
"I'm gonna watch you shine, gonna watch you grow, gonna paint a sign, so you always know, as long as one and one is two..there will never be a father that loves his daughter more than I love you."
It was like he sent me a message, as hokey as it sounds.
Then of course, Dance with my father by Luther Vandross.
Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved
If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love to dance with my father
again
Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear her, mama cryin’ for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know I’m prayin’ for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don’t do it usually
But Lord, she’s dyin’ to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream
-A :(

DCSL has got two really great ones. Tupac has quite a few songs that make me think on a sad-tip. One really good one is "I Still Love You" by T.I. He has a verse dedicated to his ex-girl (his baby-moms), a verse dedicated to his deceased father, and a verse dedicated to his children. One older one is "If I Could Change" by Steady Mobbin and... Master P (Yes, he actually made a FEW decent songs).
On the R&B tip is "I Miss You" by Aaliyah. The song itself is sad, but if you've ever seen the video... you can see how deep it goes. (DMX opens the video with a speech dedicated to the late Aaliyah, complete with tears)

And Earl Simmons isn't a crying man.
My list:
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton.
Mass Pike - The Get Up Kids.
Every Breath You Take - The Police.
Screaming Infidelities - Dashboard Confessional.
This Used to be my Playground - Madonna.
Sometimes it Snows in April - Prince.
One - Metallica.
Hardly Getting Over It - Husker Du
Candle In the Wind - Elton John.

One of the saddest yet uplifting songs I've ever heard was I'll be there by the Escape club. It was popular for a brief moment in time...
I'll also have to agree with Crystal Tears that most songs from Les miserables are sad indeed.

the winter here's cold , and bitter
it's chilled us to the bone
we haven't seen the sun for weeks
to long too far from home
I feel just like I'm sinking
and I claw for solid ground
I'm pulled down by the undertow
I never thought I could feel so low
oh darkness I feel like letting go
if all of the strength and all of the courage
come and lift me from this place
I know I could love you much better than this
full of grace
full of grace
my love
so it's better this way, I said
having seen this place before
where everything we said and did
hurts us all the more
its just that we stayed , too long
in the same old sickly skin
I'm pulled down by the undertow
I never thought I could feel so low
oh darkness I feel like letting go
if all of the strength
and all of the courage
come and lift me from this place
I know I could love you much better than this
full of grace
full of grace
my love
That's one of my favorite sad songs

Oh wait! Got another one. Also by Sarah McLachlan but not as well known and I think a bit darker. (also, when I'm mad at a guy I like songs such as Hillary Duff "So yesterday" and a Celine Dion song... and I will Survive, of course)
The ice is thin come on dive in
Underneath my lucid skin
The cold is lost, forgotten
Hours pass days pass time stands still
Light gets dark and darkness fills
My secret heart forbidden...
I think you worried for me then
The subtle ways that I’d give in but I know
You liked the show
Tied down to this bed of shame
You tried to move around the pain but oh
Your soul is anchored
The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
Offer what you can, I’ll take all that I can get
Only a fool’s here...
I don’t like your tragic sighs
As if your God has passed you by well hey fool
That’s your deception
Your angels speak with jilted tongues
The serpent’s tale has come undone you have no
Strength to squander
The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
Offer what you can, I’ll take all that I can get
Only a fool’s here to stay
Only a fool’s here to stay
Only a fool’s here...
Oo, thought of another one! "Yesterday" by the Beatles. Always makes me melancholy.

Yeah, I agree with Tears from Heaven, I Miss You, Dear Mama, Bittersweet Symphony....
Another one is Wind Beneath My Wings....I heard it in the car this past winter and started singing it, and then cried like a baby...and another poster on this board who will remain nameless proceeded to laugh and call me a "lame ass." http://hometown.aol.com/fungimagi/images/tired.gif

Yes the Dixie Chicks so no mockin' me over it. :P
Country music never fails at singing out the blues of breaking up.
"You Were Mine"
I Can't Find A Reason To Let Go
Even Though You've Found A New Love
And She's What Your Dreams Are Made Of
I Can Find A Reason To Hang On
What Went Wrong Can Be Forgiven
Without You, It Ain't Worth Livin' Alone
[Chorus:]
Sometimes I Wake Up Crying At Night
And Sometimes I Scream Out Your Name
What Right Does She Have To Take You Away
When For So Long, You Were Mine
I Took Out All The Pictures Of Our Wedding Day
It Was A Time Of Love And Laughter
Happy Ever After
But Even Those Old Pictures Have Begun To Fade
Please Tell Me She's Not Real
And That You're Really Coming Home To Stay
[Repeat Chorus]
I Can Give You Two Good Reasons
To Show You Love's Not Blind
He's Two And She's Four, And You Know They Adore You
So How Can I Tell Them You've Changed Your Mind
[Repeat Chorus:]
I Remember When You Were Mine

Personnaly, i think song made for crying sux... Too much "commercial"
Prefer songs that says something, and on one person means something because the text, the mood, the rythm means something for him/her.
(say something, say something)
Personnaly I feel "sentimental" with songs like
Love song, the cure
Losing my religion, r.e.m.
La langue de chez nous, Yes duteil (a french speaking of us)
etc etc

Love Song is a great song *nod*.
I'm a huge Jim Morrison/Doors fan, I love the End and Riders on the Storm; really deep songs, and if you know anything about The Lizard King, you know how much of his soul is in this music:
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end
Butterfly Kisses. ::sobs::

Well music can make me tear up rather easily, but here is a short list of those than nearly always succeed in doing that.
Miss Clare Remembers-Enya
The Highwayman-Loreena Mckennit
Biko- Peter Gabriel
Family Snapshot- Peter Gabriel
Adagio in G organs and strings-Albonini
Good Enough-Sarah McLachlan
My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys-Willie Nelson

Enya's rythm + really in-love-feeling = good orgasm

Ish. I hope I can type this without tearing up. Music does that to me.
"Memories", from the musical Cats
"My Heart Will Go On", from Titanic
"Knights in White Satin", Moody Blues
"Coming Back to Me" and "Talisman", Guess Who
"Riders on the Storm", The Doors
I know there are more. I blubber like a baby over sad songs. The first time I heard My Heart Will Go On on the radio, I was driving and had to pull the car over to the side of the road. ::sighs::

Sure enough. Just the memory brought the tears.
Talisman by The Guess Who
Trinket worn with colours matching saddened eyes has lost its magic touch
People from a distant hill have crossed an ever-stretching sea of sand
Artificial flowers cannot die for life within them is illusion
(chorus)
Talisman, talisman grace my hand
Talisman grace my hand
Figures made of pedigrees control the non-existent soul of John Smith
Walk the creature let it run but slacken not the rope to which it’s bound
Ships in bottles cannot sail and neither can a tombstone kill a feather
(chorus)
Kings are nothing more without the glory and the wealth behind their thinking
Let me feel the choice of seeing dawn or setting sun before I die
Myriads of painted faces rush behind the eye of the uncertain
(chorus)
Let me live only to do and let me do only to live
My steel image comes with the sun and that’s where it slumbers now
(chorus)
HarmNone...pardon me, I am blubbering
Man you have no idea how much Dear mama has helped me out in life.

Anything from ICP makes me cry. Not because it's sad, just because people actually listen to it.
Sad music for me.. lets see
Aaliyah - I Miss You
TLC - Waterfalls
Wu Tang Clan - Tearz (Bout RZA's lil brother getting kiled, Ghostface Killah's best friend getting AIDS.. just sad really..)
Aesop Rock - No Regrets (Oh my god.. Words don't even describe.. its sad, but its SO deep and SO good... it gives me the chills every time i hear it...)
thats it for now.. i suggest picking up Aesop Rock - Labor Days... big time.. great album for us 9 - 5'ers

For me it's Sweetbox - Everything's gonna be alright.
The writer of the song wrote it to come to accept her husband's death.
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Whoever thought the sun would come crashing down
My life in flames, my tears come greet the pain
Until the end, the darkest deepest riverbed
My book of life ain't complete without you here
Alone I sit and reminisce sometimes
I miss your touch, your kiss, your smile
And meanwhile you know I never cry 'cause deep down inside
I know our love will never ever die
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be okay
Everything's gonna be alright
Together we can take this one day at a time
Can you take my breath away?
Can you give him life today?
Is everything gonna be okay?
I'll be your strength, I'll be here when you wake up
Take your time, and I'll be there when you wake up
I never thought my heart would miss a single beat
Carress your hand as I watch you while you sleep
So sweet, I weep as I search within
To find a cure, to bring you back again
And the sun will rise, open up your eyes
Surprise, just the blink of an eye
I try, I try to be positive
Yo a fight is a fight, wake up and live
Everything's gonna be alright....
I'd give my life to only see you breathe again
Hand in hand as we walk on the white sands
To hear your voice, rejoice as you rise and say
This is the day that I wait and pray okay
Today's silence as time it just moves on
You can't hear it though, but I'm playing our favourite song
I miss you much, I wish you'd come back to me
You see I'd wait a lifetime, 'cause your my destiny
Everything's gonna be alright....

1. Lightning Crashes -Live.
Makes me cry everytime I hear it.
2. Take it easy -Eagles I believe.
Was played at my family members funeral.
3. Just the two of us - Will Smith.
It was the song playing when my son was being born. The words of it are about him and his son. It's just a wonderful song.
4. Desperado - Eagles.
To me it seems to be about a gambler or a loner someone who takes all the chances no matter what the fall.
5.Daddy never was a cadiliac Man - I think Kentucky headhunters.
It's a very sad song but it shows how much a person misses their father and realizes what a simple yet hard working man he was. How he gave up everything to give to his children.
6.Loss of Me - Written by a very close friend of mine.
I can't even begin to put it into words. But its a very beautiful piece.
Here are the lyrics to the Aesop Rock song No Regrets i mentioned earlier..
Lucy was 7 and wore a head of blue barettes
City born, into this world with no knowledge and no regrets
Had a piece of yellow chalk with which she drew upon the street
The many faces of the various locals that she would meet
There was joshua, age 10
Bully of the block
Who always took her milk money at the morning bus stop
There was Mrs. Crabtree, and her poodle
She always gave a wave and holler on her weekly trip down to the bingo
parlor
And she drew
Men, women, kids, sunsets, clouds
And she drew
Skyscrapers, fruit stands, cities, towns
Always said hello to passers-by
They'd ask her why she passed her time
Attachin lines to concrete
But she would only smile
Now all the other children living in or near her building
Ran around like tyrants, soaking up the open fire hydrants
They would say
'Hey little Lucy, wanna come jump double dutch?'
Lucy would pause, look, grin and say
'I'm busy, thank you much'
Well, well, one year passed
And believe it or not
She covered every last inch of the entire sidewalk,
And she stopped-
'Lucy, after all this, you're just giving in today??'
She said:
'I'm not giving in, I'm finished,' and walked away
(Chorus: x2)
1 2 3
That's the speed of the seed
A B C
That's the speed of the need
You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it
Now Lucy was 37, and introverted somewhat
Basement apartment in the same building she grew up in
She traded in her blue barettes for long locks held up with a clip
Traded in her yellow chalk for charcoal sticks
And she drew
Little bobby who would come to sweep the porch
And she drew
The mailman, delivered everyday at 4
Lucy had very little contact with the folks outside her cubicle day
But she found it suitable, and she liked it that way
She had a man now: Rico, similar, hermit
They would only see each other once or twice a week on purpose
They appreciated space and Rico was an artist too
So they'd connect on saturdays to share the pictures that they drew
(Look!)
Now every month or so, she'd get a knock upon the front door
Just one of the neighbors,
Actin nice, although she was a strange girl, really
Say, 'Lucy, wanna join me for some lunch??'
Lucy would smile and say 'I'm busy, thank you much'
And they would make a weird face the second the door shut
And run and tell their friends how truly crazy Lucy was
And lucy knew what people thought but didn't care
Cuz while they spread their rumors through the street
She'd paint another masterpiece
(Chorus: x2)
1 2 3
That's the speed of the seed
A B C
That's the speed of the need
You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it
Lucy was 87, upon her death bed
At the senior home, where she had previously checked in
Traded in the locks and clips for a head rest
Traded in the charcoal sticks for arthritis, it had to happen
And she drew no more, just sat and watched the dawn
Had a television in the room that she'd never turned on
Lucy pinned up a life worth's of pictures on the wall
And sat and smiled, looked each one over, just to laugh at it all
Now Rico, he had passed, 'bout 5 years back
So the visiting hours pulled in a big flock o' nothin
She'd never spoken much throughout the spanning of her life
Until the day she leaned forward, grinned and pulled the nurse aside
And she said:
'Look, I've never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do, but still haven't pursued
I knew what I wanted and did it till it was done
So i've been the dream that I wanted to be since day one!'
Well!
The nurse jumped back,
She'd never heard Lucy even talk,
'Specially words like that
She walked over to the door, and pulled it closed behind
Then Lucy blew a kiss to each one of her pictures
And she died.
(Chorus: x2)
1 2 3
That's the speed of the seed
A B C
That's the speed of the need
You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it
1, 2 ,3..
A, B, C...
Shieeet I got goosebump's just typin that out....

Only song that ever made me cry was Brandy's "Have you Ever"... which was probably mainly because I had just gone through some rough love-life times around when I first heard it.. But I still get all upset everytime I hear it.

I've got a song that brings tears to my eyes and goosebumps to my arms everytime I hear it. It's a song that was written around WWII. It's a father asking God to bring his son home and allow them to switch places, and it talks about the child getting on the boat and kissing his mother good bye for the last time. It hits home. I'll see if I can't find the words to it, I could try and quote it but I wouldn't do it justice.

As for the sad songs, we should consult cowboys.
I'm going to cry. That stings.

I can't listen to anything that deals with fathers.
Right after my dad died, I went to the store to buy a carton of cigarettes so I could chain smoke, and I heard Fuel's "Hemorrhage". Yeah, that song stabs me.
Memories are just where you laid them
Dragging the waters til the depths give up their dead
What did you expect to find?
Was it something you left behind?
Don't you remember anything I said when I said,
Don't fall away, and leave me to myself
Don't fall away, and leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands again
And leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands
Love lies bleeding
Oh hold me now I feel contagious
Am I the only place that you've left to go?
She cries her life is like
Some movie in black and white
Dead actors faking lines, over and over and over again She cries
Don't fall away, and leave me to myself
Don't fall away, and leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands again
And leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands
Love lies bleeding
And I watched as you turned away
You don't remember, but I do
You never even tried
Don't fall away and leave me to myself
Don't fall away and leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands again
Leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands again
Leave love bleeding in my hands, in my hands again, oh

heres the lyrics to that song i was talking about
So denied so I lied are you the now or never kind
In a day and a day love I'm gonna be gone for good again
Are you willing to be had are you cool with just tonight
Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well
Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon
Put your name on the line along with place and time
Wanna stay not to go I wanna ditch the logical
Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well
Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon
All my time is froze in motion
Can't I stay an hour or two or more
Don't let me let you go
Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well
Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon

I never thought of Lightning Crashes as a sad song... maybe it's just me. Good tune though.
Song that kills me is "Dosed".
It's the 4th track on the Red Hot Chili Peppers last CD By The Way.
Flea and Anothy sing together. It's an amazingly powerful piece of music.
Good thread by the way. Props to StrayRogue.
How bout the popular 80's power love ballad.
George Micheal's- Careless Wishper
Keep in mind the sultery sax playing going on
I'm never gonna dance again
guilty feet have got no rythm
though it's easy to pretend
I know your not a fool
should have known better not to cheat a freind
and waste the chance that I;ve been given
so I'm never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you.
.... beautiful.... lol
it really is though

Here is one by the Dead Moons one of my favorite Pearl Jam covers:
For in those reckless moments
When doubt is creeping in your head
Feeling like you've lost your youth
And the dreams you had are cold and dead
I can't reach you anymore
That's gonna take a different man
I can't protect you like before
You've slipped beyond my hands
But it's okay.......
I wish that I could light the path
That leads to a life of no mistakes
Hold you from the damned be done
That living out of safety seems to take
I remember still the child in you
As if only yesterday
It was easy to break through
I only had to kiss the pain
But it's okay.......
This is my chance, this is my life
And my opening hour
This is my choice, this is my voice
There may be no tomorrow
This is my plea, this is my need
This is my time for standing free
This is my step, this is my depth
In a world demanding of me
But is's okay.......

On the coast of somewhere beautiful - Kenny Chesney
Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams (It makes me sad, because as you grow up you realize how things change so much and how great and carefree things used to be when you were a kid.)
