Ive just got back from a bit of a vacation from Gemstone. My ranger (52) is currently a two-handed weapon user, stats and training below. Hunting is kind of dubious. At times effective, but incredibly vulnerable to multiple enemies. I re-trained from archery because I found it difficult to be effective from hiding (hard to stay hidden), blessing arrows was a pain in the ass, and it took a ton of arrows to kill one mob. Any suggestions on re-training as a lone ranger hunter? I thought about going back to archery, and perhaps trying two-weapon combat.

Drop your perception to 1x and train 40+ ranks of ambush. Then, ambush the leg and then the head. Alternately, use 610 and ambush the head. You'll have a similar DS with TWC, and you'll have particular issues with Bolt DS. If you train ranged, you'll have better DS and kill things faster. With a 25 STR bonus, 606, and 509, you can fire a longbow aimed in 3 seconds.

Personally, I love my two hander using ranger. Haven't really had an issue with him, even with multiple opponents at once, provided I kept my wits about me and timed my swings appropriately. I've tried various other alternative weapons, and honestly wouldn't fixskill him to anything else. Granted, it helps to have some really fun two handers to keep yourself entertained.

In the end, I would say it really boils down to your personal playstyle, and how you see your character.

edit: And yeah, 1x perception and more ambush definitely doesn't hurt

Archery is considered OP, but only if you pick your prey. It sounds like you were hunting undead, which are notorious pains in the asses to hide from and crit kill. 52 is past the level where many archers consider hiding to be unnecessary if they're hunting sufficiently squishy targets.

I would give the advice of those above me a good shake first, but if you wander your way back to archery see if you don't have more success/less pains in the butt going the open archery instead of the sniping route on a more carefully cultivated critter list.
