The radio show I listen to at night was having a discussion about the possibilities of a pill that would change/alter your DNA and actually put a complete stop to the aging process. I got to thinking about it..and if this did come to pass..what age would you prefer to be for the rest of "your life" ?

Well, if it had to do with physical capabilities and health, I'd have to say 17 or 18. If based on looks only, I'd say 21.

The plastic surgeons out there would never let anything like that come to pass.
They actually have a cure for the common cold, they just wont release it because it would lose money for the drug companies (or so ive heard, this may or may not be true, but im gullible)

That's funny, I seriously wonder that about many diseases and whatnot. Think about how much money drug companies would lose if everyone got better....

Based on intellect...probably 13 (I peaked in 8th grade)
Based on health/fitness...17-18
Hell yes I would take it, I have no desire to be 60 and chomping down 12 pills a day to control my blood pressure, cholesterol, allergies, depression, arthritis, and Alzheimers.

I would take the pill, I look at the elderly and really get terrified. I do not ever want my children to be burdened by my health, or have to decide how best to take care of me when I become to old to do that for myself, physically or mentally.

<<<I wouldn't take it. I look forward to all ages.>>>
you could take the pill and still age, albeit only intellectually --- whis is TOTALLY cool with me. i, for one, don't want to be mentally viable but have a decrepit body that decays visibly during my lifetime, leaving me unable physically to accomplish my goals.
young people envy the money and wisdom of the elderly, and the elderly would give it all for the youth of the young. so hell, why not have both?!
i'm taking it the second it's available...which is hopefully soon!

Ha, that would actually be a *real* "Social Security Crisis." Take that, Bush!
Oh, and I would like to be able to grow old, get grey hair, and die, thank you very much.

I want my 17 year old mindset back. Good times.
And the physical buffness of all the different stages of ages from when I first began to excercise, up to my current physique (too lazy to target all the muscles in one sitting.)

How they have cures for all these illnesses like Herpes and the common cold and the flu and so on. Who knows... sounded believable.
I'd want to be age 21... that was a cool one.

I would take it.
We'll all die someday be it natural causes or murder/accidental death and the like. No pill can stop those. So it's not like we would NEVER die, we would just look better when we do.

oh!!
And this would also eliminate the need for things like social security. Healthy people can work longer. Since we're going to be social securityless by the time I'm old enough to get it, might as well just keep working.

Getting old sucks. Your metabolism slows down so you have to eat less and less and sweat more and more just to stay the same. Your hair not only gets grey, the texture changes and long hair that used to feel like spun silk now feels more like unspun burlap. Your eyes betray you, that once perfect vision now requires trifocals just to function... badly. Phantom aches and pains ghost throughout your body, nothing you can really put a finger on and nothing your doctor will do anything about. Speaking as a female, your sexual 'get up and go' functions as well as ever but generally by old age your partners has 'got up and went'. For those who have been robbed of their partner by time, one look in the mirror, at your grey hair, facial wrinkles, and sags where once there were perks is enough to put the kabosh on the idea of seeking a new partner.
Lemme see, what else? People start to treat you as if every grey hair represents an IQ point that has magically flown off into the stratosphere. Young people start to look very big and intimidating, and what you see of yourself reflected in their eyes looks very much like a target. You get diseases like arthritis, that keep you from doing the things that make life enjoyable. Your injuries are worse than they would have been in your teens and they take much longer to heal. Something like a memory lapse, which would provoke a snort of laughter in a younger person, leads to hours of worry that Alzheimers Disease is reaching out for you with its sly, greedy fingers.
If that pill really did come along, you bet your ass I'd take it. Turn my physical clock back to 17? In a heartbeat.
Kimm
Edited to add... And no I'm not quite this old yet. But some mornings... oh yeah, I can see what's waiting a couple of decades down the road and I'd stop it if I could.

No sagging yet, though. So I guess I would take the pill.

This pill will never come to be just as is. Healing is part of the aging process as well. Also, the DNA does not change with age. Secretion of hormones and enzymes etc.. cause aging to take place. The more natural possibility is of replacement of blood and bone marrow which would allow people to live unusually longer lives.

Of course it's not fun! When you're old you act that way because you're bitter and flacid. And that's what makes it so cool.

What causes aging is the accumulation of free radicals and lessening of ATP production. If this pill is what I think it is, it does something with mitochondria and has doubled the lifespan of test mice.
I thought it was living in an oxygen rich atmosphere that caused aging.

I'd stop at whatever age I can reach when I no longer get ID'd for cigarettes and beer,so in my case I'm probably going to have to make it to like....42. That is, assuming my facilities are all intact....because everyone knows how I like to get down....well, maybe just J........

Mitochondria are eerie little buggers. I'd take it as soon as I could as long as it didn't lead to the characters from Episode I-III of Star Wars showing up.
