Premiere is tonight! The premiere will be on CBS at 8:30pm EST, all episodes after are behind the CBS All Access paywall. Outside the US and Canada it is on Netflix.
I hope it doesn't suck!

Sorta, but not really. It is only 10 years prior to Captain Kirk, so the Federation Exists and all that jazz.

They should do a serious Warhammer 40k show on HBO or even Showtime with GoT like production values, maybe about the Horus Heresy, I would cut off one of my testicles to see that.

It had pretty awesome production value. As far as the tone, I'd say it is about 3/4ths of the way between TNG and the movies. Not quite as gritty as the movies, but not as Utopian as the TOS or TNG or any of that. I'll be continuing my all access for it.

I'm a Star Trek nerd... I'm halfway through the episode right now. So far, it's meh. The acting seems clunky. Hopefully, because it's the pilot... shit might get better.
And why do the Klingons look SO fucking different in every reinvention of Star Trek? I get some subtle differences.. but sheesh, they don't even look like Klingons in this one.

I think they look more alien and menacing here. In TOS they were basically just humans with some weird facial hair, they changed them a bunch for TNG to make them look more brutish and alien, and now they've done it again.

I didn't see the first half of the episode but, the reviews I've seen were mostly positive. I'm hopeful anyway and will be watching. The only thing that bugged me about the bit I did see was the reliance placed on camera angles. They heavily utilized the trick of angled camera views to increase the dramatic impact of scenes. I think they overdid that a bit.

Yeah it is pretty gay, but they have a lot of other shows on there, and it allows me to watch my local CBS affiliate online. And btw, Episode 2 was quite a bit better than Episode 1. I liked 1 alright, but 2 is where the good parts are. They definitely intended for both to be seen together.

An opener comprised of a yak vomiting would be better than Enterprise's. Then they went and redid it for Season 3 by adding stupid little rhythm beats to it.

So I watched the three available episodes on CBS Access and I'm loving this outing of the Star Trek franchise. So worth six bucks a month. I only hope they do away with the Klingon subtitles. I don't like not being able to look away from the screen while the Klingon's are talking. And, for a combative species, they sure like to talk a lot. Hopefully the show's writers "teach" them English soon.

What character was that? I'm not being snide...I seriously didn't notice. EDIT: never mind, I must have missed this because I was multi-tasking while watching the show (which is why the Klingon subtitles annoyed me.)

I think Lorca might be a bad guy in disguise. And, if he has a problem with light hurting his battle damaged eyes then why the fuck doesn't he wear sunglasses outside his dimmed office?
I know it was a storytelling device but come on, a convicted mutineer and traitor is really going to be assigned to bunk with a cadet? Not likely.
I will be very disappointed if that monster Lorca took from the other ship for his private menagerie doesn't, at some point, get beamed onto an enemy vessel to wreak havoc.
The new technology being created for faster travel is obviously going to fail as there is nothing like it in later franchise series history but, maybe it will be adapted to create holodeck technology?
Who the fuck is the actor who plays Sarek? He seemed so familiar. Apparently, if you slap a set of pointy ears on someone, it's enough of a disguise that it will fool me. The Clark Kent's of the world are safe from me.

Good to know. Is there any other show that is Access only that is worth watching? Otherwise they will probably see a rush of cancellations after this series goes on break. It's supposed to be like nine episodes for the first season of Discovery, right?

Absolutely about Captain Lorca. Maybe not a bad guy persay, but probably a guy who believes that the end justifies the means. Didn't like how he allowed Stamets to talk to him in front of others.. or how Lorca belittled him in front of everyone as well. Doesn't seem like a good leadership quality in a Captain.
Pretty sure he's either the villain (it's not really the Klingons) or just a bad Captain.

That was a big surprise to me. I mean, she was a major character in Battlestar Galactica so I was certain they were setting her up as a regular on Discovery. I hope they don't pull a "oh hey, she has a twin who is joining the crew now!" story arc.
I'm so tired to subtitles. I wish they'd stop. I don't like reading my TV entertainment.
I felt sorry for the monster but it's a pretty ingenious way to incorporate new technology that isn't in later Star Trek series since the inhumane treatment of a sentient being would never be acceptable by later Trek standards.

Yeah, I figured there was going to be some sort of way that they explain away spores not appearing in later Star Treks. I was thinking they were going to be limited or something, because it seems to me that a different Civilization, like the Klingons, would one day figure out this whole spore thing and not give two shits about some critter suffering. I'm sure there'll be an explanation later though.
The subtitles are annoying, I wish they'd use the old way where they spoke mostly in English still with klingon words tossed in for flavor.

Yeah at the timelines add up. Taken "capture" at the battle of the Binary Stars... That was the last place he was at before he vanished. He was also told by the female klingon he'll need to "destroy them from the inside". And then of course, he picked a ship the he knew was destroyed as the one he came from.

I think this episode was one of the best of the entire Star Trek franchise. The quality of the production, the writing, and the acting almost made me feel like I was watching a movie. A lot of people were saying Tyler was Voq, from the moment Voq stopped appearing and then Tyler showed up. That they were played by the same actor helped continue the rumor. There were still many who doubted it though. Even sites trying to "prove" it wasn't true.
