Shitty G4, but very cool.

Saying "shitty G4" in the same breath is near blasphemy. Macs are great computers, which is why we have both in our home. The PC for all the popular software and games, and the Mac for ease of use and nifty stuff.

My brother has a Dual G5 2.5, which is damn near a year old already. Hence my comment of shitty G4, as his computer is probably about 10x more powerful than this.

And that G4 probably out performs many current PC's.

you know, that mac mini, at 500$ a pop is better then 100% of the e-machines out there, that use celeron processors..

besides that.. now all u coders who wanted to buy a l33t MAC to use Warlock FE for GS can now get a cheap one!

Mac Minis also do not come with monitors, keyboards, nor mice.

They'll flop.

I don't think they'll flop at all.

I'm even considering buying one, and the last Apple computer I've owned and used was an LCII. Since then, I've been a PC man, as I couldn't stand the Mac OS at that time.

I've been keeping track of Macs, though, and I know that their OS has gotten loads better through the years. The only reason I've never gotten one is because I can do everything on my PC that I could with a Mac. That, and the absurd price.

I think the whole concept behind the mini Mac is to get PC owners to buy one and give it a try, to see how Macs work and whatnot. $500 is a very attractive price, and chances are they already own a keyboard, monitor, and mouse. And if they don't? They can just go out and buy a video switch and a $10 mouse and keyboard. Not exactly a prohibitive barrier. And since the size of the computer is so miniscule, they won't need to find any desk or floor space for it. Hell, I could fit that mini Mac on top of my subwhoofer that I keep under my desk.

I'll probably wait until some unbiased reviews come out until deciding whether I'll purchase one or not.

They'll only flop if they're crappy like the cube. I'm betting Apple learned their lesson with the cube and has made a very reliable computer.

Not coming with a monitor, keyboard or mouse is hardly a big deal as most users already have these things. This is by far the most affordable Mac ever made, and most tempting to people who have never wanted to spend alot of money to buy a Mac.

I'm probably going to order one.

I, having never owned a Mac (does an Apple ][e count?), would not buy a Mac system without a keyboard, mouse or monitor. It's a shitty deal if its 500 bucks for the computer, then another 500 for a nice flat screen and keyboard/mouse.

Single 1.25 Ghz processor, max 1GB RAM... not a bad price, but you'd really want to max the RAM.

This has to be marketed to PC users. Great idea too. Anyone that already has a Mac from the past three years has a better machine.

Also, I don’t see anything about upgrading this thing yourself. But Apple usually has a way.

Ok, the first one was lame, and majorly untrue.

But Chappelle is always gold.

I fail to see how ease of use and a one button mouse fit in the same sentence. I have five, count them, five fingers, and I'm not afraid to use them. Plus its not even ergonomic so forget all that crap.

Mac may have started the whole GUI thing, but for a good ten years they were retired from the game and coming back now they need to catch up. OSX is a pain in the ass to work with, every action requires me to mouse all the way across the screen, and with the lousy default mouse this is tiresome and tedious. The heart of the problem is that the multidocument interface sucks, Microsoft learned this a few years ago and they are going away from it now, and everything in OSX (well the Apple originated software) is MDI.

This isn't more or less expensive than any other mac offering, my only concern with this is its main selling point its small size, its plainly out of scale. Also its a hardware deadend, you can't upgrade that hunk of plastic, even less so than the iMacs.

Edit:
Hah, that first video is fucking funny, sounds like my first experience with them. Dragging and dropping my disk icon into the trash R GREAT interface! haha

simple solution, buy another mouse. they even make ones with multiple buttons and a scroll wheel designed much like a mac. I hate the standard mac mouse, too

The logic required to use a macintosh system is no different then that of a PC. You were trained on a windows/ms-dos based computers, so that's what you know.
I was brought up with ms-dos 3.1, and windows 3.11, etc.. But have switched over to a mac without a problem.

OSX is a unix-based OS, which some 'coders' appreciate. My mac crashes less then the 2500$ pentiums at my college.

Well, it's less expensive then a ton of those celeron e-machines out there. It's very space effecient, which is great for college dorms. Since the cost is low for the box, you can get a decent monitor for under 100$ and a keyboard/mouse for 50$, speakers for 40$. That's if you don't want the high-end stuff.

I can see this being effective at outfitingt schools who don't have a large IT budget.

This is more for the people who use their systems for surfing the net, budgeting, word processing.. basically the stuff you would other than game. I know, the horrors of doing stuff OTHER than gaming, but yes, people out there do it. :D

It's small, it's lightweight, it's portable, it's easy to use, it's affordable. I don't see how someone can say that OS X is hard to use. It's pretty user friendly. And from 10.2 on, they've been adding features to accommodate the PC user. The search engine alone on the Macs far outweight anything the PC can offer, as in including the PC terms in it and it pinpoints to where you would need to go to make the adjustments. I think these computers are a great idea to introduce Macs to the PC generation.

Now if only the rest of the gaming community would build their games like Blizzard and make them cross-platform, I'd be set.

only thing that makes me mad is that most games are not crossed over to the macintosh.

WoW is, though..

The browser: Safari, destroys every other browser on the market. Unfortunately I have just grown to love my diesel 4.5 year old laptop.

If you seriously can't operate OS X you should have your computer taken away and be given a football helmet and a big red ball to play with.

Also, Safari is by far the best browser around.

have you ever run multiple apps on a Mac... they suck.

Back
01-14-2005, 07:26 PM
Unless you are talking about one of the earlier models... I usually have at least 5 apps running at any given time. And that is using OS9. Now, I admit, if one app needs more memory, or if the system bogs, I’ll quit uneeded apps.

OS X however, can open multiple programs at once. Lets see a PC do that.

CrystalTears
01-14-2005, 07:30 PM
The nice thing about Macs is that you can assign how much memory each individual program can use to run. So if you see a program is running too slow, you can just up the memory for it. Macs can multitask way better than PC's can, plus they don't crash quite as often, if ever.

I've found that most people who talk bad about a Mac are either talking bad about pre-OS X or don't really know shit. OS 9 compared to Windows 2000 did suck, but when you compare OS 7.6 to Windows 95 or 98, the Mac wins. Of course, if you don't know shit about a computer, you'd think a Mac sucks because of games, but in all actuality, most of the IT security people I know, myself included, use OS X religiously for things like built-in ssh, vi, not having to worry about viri and spyware and the ability to Fink apps like nmap, nessus, ettercap, etc.
