From ABC News:

WASHINGTON Jan 8, 2005 — Newt Gingrich is taking steps toward a potential presidential bid in 2008 with a book criticizing President Bush's policies on Iraq and a tour of early campaign states.

The former House speaker who led Republicans to power a decade ago said he soon will visit Iowa and New Hampshire to promote his book, try to influence public policy and keep his political options alive.

"Anything seems possible," including a White House race, Gingrich told The Associated Press.

The quotable and controversial former Georgia congressman, who now runs a consulting firm in Washington, is promoting, "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America." He seemed to welcome the thought that a book tour will increase speculation about his political aspirations.

You can’t be serious. Spread the rumor to up book sales, sure, but he can’t possibly be serious, or rather, everyone can’t possibly be serious to suggest him as a candidate. The Republicans can do so much better.

I was shocked when I heard it on the Today show this morning. He has far too many skeletons in the closet to be a viable candidate in my opinion.

Then again.. Hillary is rumored to be running...

#1 reason I would not vote for Newt.

The people for Newt call me at home, in Illinois, for campaign contributions. WTF?!

#2 reason I would not vote for Newt.

Had the audacity to call for the expulsion of fellow congressmen because of extra marital affairs.

#3 reason I would not vote for Newt.

Was getting hummers from a married woman (not his wife) in 1977 and claiming he wasn't having sex with her.

Sound familiar?

Heh.. Tsa`ah said hummers.

I wouldn't vote, or want to vote, for Arnold either.

That's opening a can of worms we really don't want to deal with.

Oh, I would. Amend the Presidential requirements!

AHNOLD 08!

Are you talking about his skeletons or that he was born outside of the United States?

If it's the first.. I don't mind dealing with it.

If it's the second.. speak for yourself. I think that the Constitution should be updated to the 21st century and throw that antiquated law out.

I could care less about Arnold's past. I just don't think amending the constitution in this manner is very wise.

If we make this exception because Arnold is a great guy, what's the next exception? Who and what creeps in behind the exceptions we make?

Soros vs Ahnuld in 08!

:snickers:

It's funny how the Republicans would never accept anything like that until they have a viable candidate.

The law is antiquated to the 1700's when the media was nothing but a literary work or a weekly newspaper that most people didn't even read. Do you really believe that a creep could waltz into the USA and get elected.. only to be found out later that he really was a creep? And what makes you think that it wouldn't happen to someone who was born here anyway?

I have faith in the American people and to a certain extend to the American media.. that the 'creep' will be rooted out far before he / she is elected to the Presidency.

Has this actually ever been discussed or brought up prior to this current discussion?

I was thinking the same thing.

I agree that they should update the rules a bit, this is the 21st century afterall. And like PB says, I think the media would out anyone dangerous before it got too far.

Newt would never get elected, though I never thought Bush would never get elected, then re-elected.

Scary, scary thought.

It's easier to lump anyone who isn't a Republican into the Demo category.

It's a fucking conspiracy.

"And like PB says, I think the media would out anyone dangerous before it got too far. "

Seen either version of the Manchurian Candidate?

It's been discussed before, but not ever to the point of an attempted vote and not since the 1980's in any serious notion.

Call it my conservative side... in the era of massive outsourcing, I'd worry about undue influences on a naturalized President.

I wouldn't support an amendment that would grant anyone in the world the right to become the President of the United States.. but I would certainly support an amendment that allowed someone who was an upstanding member of this country for the past 30 years the opportunity to become President.

Only thing scarier was that Al Gore and John Kerry were almost elected.

Then you get into the symantics of what is upstanding, good, and moral.

There are very few upstanding, good, and moral politicians, Arnold is no exception.

I mentioned upstanding because I believe there is a law against someone who is incarcerated from running for President. Nothing more.

Arnold moved to the US in 1968. Granted he isn't considered a citizen back then, but he has been (will have been) living in the country for 40 (FORTY) years. Who is one to say he's not more American than you or I?

Warriorbird
01-12-2005, 07:12 PM
Then how do you qualitatively judge? Should a just naturalized citizen be able to run? 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years?

30 years after date of attaining official citizenship?
