There's only one feature which we will begin working on AFTER Beta starts, that we hope to be ready for live. But it's a special one, so we're gonna forgive ourselves.

We've kinda hinted about it up until now, but I do want to officially confirm for everyone that Katanas and other oriental-style weapons will be a GemStone IV feature.

Katanas themselves will be a new weapon type.

I'm so glad I didn't buy that black imflass katana for 7m......

I would like to restate that the first person I see that talks in idiot Chinese-accent mocking speak will get deeded. I really wish they had thought this one through before making Monks an option. Ugh.

I bet everyone will have them now. There goes the rarity value. I hope the GMs limit their release incredibly.

I saw this coming. Both good things and bad things will result from the decision. I hope the good outweighs the bad, but...well, somehow, I doubt it.

I'm glad. Why? It'll maybe help hold some of the anime generation until they can be converted into decent gamers. Most of the "Ice Age" weren't thrilling when they started, and same can be said of the AOL folks who are now regarded as icons, often.

Haha. I hope they make them pussy weapons.

At least those guys on the official boards that claim to "need a katana for RP purposes" will be pacified

I'm making a halfling monk named Perspicuity.

Perspicuity will speak like so...

"Perspicuity say, Virginity like bubble. One prick - all gone!"

"Perspicuity say, Man who fight with wife all day, get no piece at night!"

I can't wait to meet you in game Edaarin!

"Perspicuity say, man who stand on toilet, high on pot."

Hard act to keep up. Good luck and eat chinese every week.

I was going to be buying a Faendryl one yesterday, but I couldn't sell the damn shield for the extra coin. The prices have been dropping for a while now as people have been suspecting this to happen. Ah well, thank God I didn't buy one...

I'm sure the base will be a toned down bastard sword, switchable OHE/THW that only slashes, with no puncture or crush crits. Fairly straightforward. And I will have to check whether or not it will be worth it to have my adamantine katana converted to the new base.

That wouldn't be very realistic.

Traditional katanas are slender, medium length, one handed blades. I know I've heard of a two handed 'dai-katana'.

I'm guessing the base will be closer to longsword base as it can puncture and slash, but not crush.

My little monk is human and has no chinese accent. I have most of her background story worked out and there is nothing oriental in her aside from her clothing. She wears wide-legged silk trouser and a long ao-dai style tunic. The tunic is actually described as a robe and the only giveaway sign of oriental influence is the frog-closures.

Oh I forgot to add that she will definitely use katanas.

A Dai-katana has a 30" blade with a hilt of at least 10". Ample enough room for two-handed use.

Except the part where YOU CAN ALSO SWING IT WITH TWO HANDS, huh? You need to watch Kill Bill Vol 1. And maybe actually use a katana.

Talk about reviving a dead topic...

But yeah, katanas can be swung one or two-handed.

Dai-katana's are basically just really big katanas, with blades around five feet long, sometimes more.

Something I've never understood is how you can comfortably have 5 feet of steel on you. Sheathing it must be a bitch.

They were probably carried around like the normal daisho set. On the left side of the hip, tucked behind a sash, with the blade end pointing behind you like a tail.

Just to note Katanas are Japanese and not used by the Chinese.

So, if you want to role play a Ninja, learn how to speak Broken English with a japanese accent.
