When I turn on my computer, the only thing that shows up is the background..the taskbar and all icons are gone. For some reason though, when I press alt+ctrl+delete and click restart, it restarts Windows normally.

It's not computer threatening but it's annoying the hell outta me right now. Any clues?

There is no task bar at all? Or the task bar is just blank?

OMG it's a MS conspiracy to sell you more MS products because perfect products make for less spending!

I bet it's because you suck at computers. People like you are the reason spyware and other malicious programs exist.

Ok, I had a client with a problem like yours, I have (somewhere) the solution for it.

Few questions:

1) it does it every time you start up? but a restart fixes it? or just some times?

2) if you don't restart, and do a shutdown then turn back on, does it still do it, or does it boot like normal?

3) What OS are you running?

I'm with D1. You can accidentally hide the taskbar.

You probably have some kind of virus (most unlikely), spyware (Most likely) or a hijacker (somewhere in the middle of probability) that's making your explorer.exe file go retarded sometimes. Run a system file checker from the system tools menu. If that doesn't find any altered files you might want to go to webroot.com and download spysweeper and scan for any spyware. Also if you have anti-virus software, make sure it's up to date and run it. And if you come back to me with you have that free AOl crap, I'm going to hunt you down with Methais who will be armed with Goatse and Tubgirl pictures, because those things don't work like <insert ethnic group, Arkans> If the system file checker does come back with a altered file, run spyware removal and anti-virus anyways.....basically run them no matter what you do.

If all above fails and it still happens (Even if it's random) just run a repair installation with the XP CD. boot from the CD, at the setup screen press enter, then F8 and finally R. Let that run and finish. You may have to set up certain devices like display, sound and maybe network, but those are the easy parts. Also make sure only the keyboard, mouse and moniter are hooked up or you'll run the risk of screwing up other things. Best way to replace a windows installation without losing data. If all else fails, call me and buy a new system loaded with a bunch of crap you will never really need for a really retarded price.
