I want to go camping...I know, it's the winter. Does anyone know any place good in the new england area for winter camping? Does anyone know any good places out in Alaska for camping in general?

You don't go caming in Alaska in the winter, but if you do, where can't you camp in Alaska?

I spent an awesome summer camping in Denali. It was one of the three most amazing camping trips I've taken (along with Interlaken, Switzerland and Uray, Colorado). I would advise summer camping and when you do it, bring some sort of eye covering for when you sleep. Also plan ahead and get the permits to actually enter the park. Don't do the pussy day trails and then just camp in the public sites.

Oh, and be sure to pick up the safety pamphlet on black bears. It's hilarious. You'll see.

Your not really camping if you don't back country, first off. Secondly, I hung my food pack on a tree every night I camped, out on a limb, suspended down some. However, one day, I saw a black bear scamper down a tree like it was a frickin squirrel, the bear was in Tennesee...also saw a coyote there...they are everywhere now. Boundry waters in Minnesota or Canada is a great place to camp...get lost in a canoe for a week or two and try to find your way back. Oh yeah, but moose are mean bastards. Your likely to have similair problems in Alaska, depending on where you are of course, there's much bigger problems. In Utah, Bryce is okay, but I recommend back country in Zion. New Mexico/Arizona go to Guadalupe and bring your own water (water purifier is useless when there's no water to purify).

I'm wanting to go to Alaska this summer, one of my hiking buddies is down with it. He does great research before we go anywhere. When he gets done doing his thing, I'll be able to tell you anything you wanna know. I mean, the guy will have everything from the average rainfall in the reqion during that period, to the expected mosquito count...1/3 of the crap is actually useful though. Since I tend to go head first into things, and he overprepares, we kinda balance out.

Agreed. My idea of camping is staying over at a friends or a motel.

Camping... Just go out in your yard and roll around in the mud.

My idea of roughing it is no cable.

If you insist, though, I know that Vermont and New Hampshire both offer year-round campgrounds. For non-campground camping in New England, I'd say the northwestern area of Maine. For slightly more civilized camping, the Berkshires in Massachusetts are always gorgeous.

I went camping... at a campground in Maine one winter when I still lived up there, I dont think I'll ever do it again. I dont care about the camping part, it was just too damn cold.

The best part was.. though it was at a campground.. this couple pulled in really late, and tried to set up their tent, and we watched them try to put up this little dome tent for like an hour... when we woke up the next day.... the tent pieces were on the ground and they were asleep in their truck... but I digress

I love Maine for camping up there.

My Mom use to drag me camping when I was little. But her idea of camping was a little askewed. We brought like 30 bags in the back of our truck. 3 different tents just in case, a portable plastic sink, lots of bottled water, 2 large ice chests full of food, a battery powered little T.V. radio and other random conforts. I always wondered why the hell she would drag us out there. And we always had to have a bathroom close by or no deal.
