View Full Version : Hey guys, need an opinion.

This is a serious question and would like a serious answer.
I'm considering buying a capped character. I've never actually owned one and actively played one but I want one for mechanical purposes.
Reasons:
-I don't think I'll make it to cap. I RP way too much and enjoy going to Fests and doing non power gamer crap.
-The mechanical advantages; especially after how Wyrom explained how the hoppers work, is too great a pull. I'm a gambler, period. I like playing slots and I like the thought of having a chance for a BIG prize. Apparently, this isn't possible on low level boxes.
-I want to see how most of you play the game. Most of you guys are capped or close to it and I'm very curious how you interact with others in-game. Although I'm certain the seller will alert everyone on the 'super cool kids' channel I don't have access to on which character I've bought, I am a completely different person in-game and take RP very seriously..to a fault.
What does everyone think? And if so, what class should I try?

If it's what you want, go for it. If someone is an ass to you IG because they don't like you here (which is the complete opposite of staying IC anyway), just don't interact with them.
I'd say go for sorcerer or empath or rogue, because they're pretty awesome and can handle most anything. Ultimately just go for a class you find the most interesting for RP since you're heavy into it.

You should buy foxs or demyse, or someone with a reputation equal to your own.... Maybe klaive, but I don't think he ever capped.

It's cute how you think those two would ever get sold.

If you enjoy the game as you do now, you don't need to spend the money on a capped character to do the same.

Whatever neat loot you get out of the over hunted capped hunting grounds will not sell for anywhere the cost of you paying for a capped character. If you like gambling you're better off taking your money to vegas or even just digging events in game. Remember some of Dreaven's older posts on the official forums about how the only cool thing he's ever got out of the hopper is like, a sephwir bow in all of his years of playing? That's what you'll be dealing with.

Plenty of the people your lvl 50-60 character interacts with are alts of higher people. You're not missing much. On a different note, no seller who takes hundreds of dollars from you for such a big purchase is going to badmouth you on the cool kids channel or whatever.
But seriously, save your money.

My 2 cents: I've bought about 5-7 characters, levels 21-60. Know how many I have left?...none. I've never ended up liking any character I bought. I like plugging away at my level 38 wiz, 22 Cleric, and 14 Paladin. I created them from scratch, and I love the names I gave them. It's the work you put in to it that makes you appreciate and love the character. I doubt it would have mattered if any of the characters I bought was capped.

Yeah, bought characters never really feel like they are "mine". I could have bought it at 20 and leveled it to 80 and I still know it was a bought character. I have several I've bought, but they are all support.

Right on. I agree 110% on this. It's just the dealbreaker was how the hoppers were organized. Even in dig and duskruin sewers manor or whatever it seemed like the 'better' stuff dropped for higher level or capped people. Like a golvern lance would never drop for my level 15 but would have a chance for dropping on a capped character.
So, purely for digs, arena, and games of chance(since I do gamble a bit) having a capped character would allow for maximum gain. Again, still debating if this is worth it though.

Stick to lower levels imo it's much more fun, there's more diversity, and I found the creatures and treasure to be much more interesting. It's difficult to trump the utility of a capped character especially a pure but I wish there was a way (other than inflicting death's sting on your self) to turn off xp gain. Levels 20, 30, 40 would have made nice caps to inflict on yourself, I did this with skyrim requiem and it made the game much more fun.

I've always thought the same. I wish there were a scaling mechanism so I could continue to hunt my favorite areas (shan, various parts of RR, greymist) even when capped. I'd be willing to take a loot/exp hit just to be able to experience those grounds in a challenging form again.

My serious answer:
If you're enjoying your RP, why are you even considering buying a capped character? My mind is boggled! The journey *is* the adventure.
I'm pretty much the definition of slacker. Yet I recently entered the beginning parts of OTF to hunt. 2 years ago, I would never believe that was possible.
I call this the oddest thread EVER!

Maybe someone else can confirm, but assuming you're at least level 13, I think any game of chance is based completely off RNG and everyone has the same chance regardless of level. Only the GM fed hunting hoppers seem to be somewhat level based. Maybe Wyrom or someone else can confirm.

This was 100% confirmed by Wyrom and others in regards to the EG style games of chance. As far as GM created "box found" treasures, Wyrom stated (paraphrasing but a bit of searching will find the recent posts) that there are multiple hoppers that generally cover a few ranges of levels (I'd take a shot and figure something like Reim, 0-30,31-60,61-90,91+ and each hopper distributes treasures in a generally similiar manner (think 1 per X boxes found) now due to the demographics of the game the most active hopper is the capped hopper. Items scale in power and materials as the level hoppers go up. So the best mechanical items are generally in the capped hopper but they are much harder to get because your competition pool is much larger.
His NDA prevents him from telling us exactly how it works but he didnt say no when a similiar system was described.

I think his point is that he wants the character for the chance to find some end-game loot, not to become that character.
I've bought a couple capped rogues to open boxes for me. They were exceedingly interesting, but I had no ability to hunt with them. The one was a guild master of everything, which was fun for a minute. I had a capped sorceress, but only because she came with another character I had to do enchanting for me. She was excessively powerful, but I didn't have the right gear and had no interest in pursuing that. I think a sorc would be a good capped hunter though. I had a couple wizards to do my enchanting bidding and the few times I hunted with them, they were also amazing. In the end, none of them were ever 'me', they were just essentially mindless bots for my main character.
I think it takes a lot of effort to try and inhabit more than one character. I tried to be aloof and evil once and I just couldn't stop wanting to be helpful. My little bard is a lot of fun, you might want to try a capped bard as well.

If I had to pick my top ten hunting grounds, probably eight of them would be in the level 30 to 78 range and the other two would be Wormwood Slough and the northern slopes of Wehntoph. At least those two are thankfully [i]so/[i] early (levels 3-9 and 15-20) that I can make new characters for them any time I want.

My opinion is the journey is what makes this game fun. To me, capping in GS is like the gamer equivalent of summiting mount everest, or maybe better put acheiving enlightenment as a buddhist monk. It's a massive feat. Not many outside of our little nerd group appreciate it, but its still significant.
In a game like WOW, getting to cap is where the game actually starts, the leveling grind was fun once, even twice, but after that it got old and I even bought PLing services back in the day before you could just buy them direct from Blizz.
But this game is different. Skipping to the end, in my opinion, would ruin everything. It would suck the fun and definately suck the feeling of "accomplishment" out of reaching cap. To me, it would cheapen EVERYTHING and even ruin the game. At that point, would you care to level any other characters again? Would you ever want to do any tedious grinding in the mid-levels? I doubt it, you'd likely just buy another account or trade for one.
I'm 54 and been playing this game off and on casually for like, i dont know 15-20 years. But my bard, who is 54, is only maybe 4-5 years old. Capping still seems like a huge mountain to climb. But i'm having fun! I hunt with my 51 wizard, and we do very well. Even coin wise and loot from boxes we are hitting maybe 100k every 2 hours or so. Its not alot and the enhancives i find are usually crap (finally found a decent one, which i sold here for 2.4m). But I love bartering, merchants, and running my little imaginary GS biz. Thats what makes the game fun for me, finding deals and bartering, buying selling making silver. I'm not a power hunter, but I probably fry and absorb 3-5 times a day.
So yah, maybe i'll cap in another 5 years, but at least then I will feel i earned it, and didnt just skip to the end in a game where it actually matters.
I would just like to add, I would consider buying a capped character myself, but only after I reached cap on my own first with one of my own characters.
