View Full Version : Capped Archer Mage

How viable is an archer mage at cap?

Since mages can only 1x Ranged, can they generate enough AS to hit capped critters?

Thanks!

Whirlin would probably have a strong opinion on this subject....

(The short answer is yes)

Viable. Fun. More viable if you invest more heavily in gear/enhancives. Not mutually exclusive to casting.

How about against greater constructs with a 4x bow and ebladed arrows?
I am slogging through getting 3x HP, and then looking for something else to train.

I am considering archery because of the inability to drag with constructs in the room, and I do not always have the 200 mana left to drop their magic barrier.

For now I carry a few charged crystal wands and I have a 1x major sanctuary item if need be, sometimes they will move off while the sanctuary is up.

Your Air Lore is a few ranks too low, but it looks like you have capacity to take it a little higher. I think it's 66 for longbow aimed in 1s.
Start enchanting a bow up to 7x now if you plan in training ranged.
Constructs are easy!

Was thinking about this when driving... depending on your STR and race, the Air Lore Requirement I quoted earlier may be much less. 66 is just when you only have +5 STR Bonus

You fire a wooden arrow at a water moccasin!
AS: +111 vs DS: +33 with AvD: +33 + d100 roll: +45 = +156
... and hit for 38 points of damage!
The water moccasin is stunned!

** As you hit, your arrow sucks away the air! **

... 15 points of damage!
Back strains under sudden decompression!
The water moccasin is sliced neatly in two.
The scintillating white light surrounding the arrow fades some.
Glancing shot. The wooden arrow flips over, landing behind a water moccasin.
Roundtime: 5 sec.

This is with 535 active, 1 rank ranged, aim left eye, 0x bow, ebladed arrow, not encumbered.

506 is what will help with bow RT. Try again with Celerity active

Going off of memory. But 66 Ranks of Air is required when your STR bonus is 5 (since 509 brings that to a +20 effective bonus). Since you have +15 base, the RT would be 1 less (-1 RT per 10 STR Bonus). I think I remember longbows qstrike stamina cost increasing at 20 stamina per RT reduction, so the 66 req would be reduced down to 46. There's some other flat rate qstrike stamina cost reducers built into celerity, which is why the linear progression doesn't start at 0.

Live and learn, added 506:

You fire a wooden arrow at a fanged goblin!
AS: +111 vs DS: -3 with AvD: +31 + d100 roll: +94 = +239
... and hit for 80 points of damage!
Strike through eye, the fanged goblin is lobotomized!
The fanged goblin falls to the ground, kicks several times and dies.
The scintillating brown light surrounding the arrow fades some.
The wooden arrow sticks in a fanged goblin's left eye!
Roundtime: 5 sec.
Roundtime changed to 1 second.

Thank you both!

Also, since you have >50 Ranks of Air lore, you should set 506 to Evoke rather than Incant, it'll auto-group cast at no additional mana cost. Bandit groups will love you.

INCANT will now use EVOKE for the Celerity spell.

You are the man, thanks!

Related question for Whirlin - Does the Evoke version count as self-cast for all targets (no cooldown)? I'm debating tweaking my wizard if so.

No. Everyone else gets the cooldown. If you recast, it'll simply bypass them if they're still under the cooldown period. However, since you're recasting at least every minute, it'll more or less auto-apply as soon as their cooldown is up.

I'm not the one who needs air lore just to drive!

And as bad as LA drivers are, MA drivers are still the worst.

I read this as "drink while driving," and was very confused for a moment how one could expect a Louisianan to not drink while driving.
