View Full Version : Disarming boxes at cap

Hi,

I have been thinking about maxing (2x) disarm traps skill so I can disarm and bash critter boxes.

I was just wondering if anyone has feedback on how viable this is? It seems like a cool idea but if someone was to tell me that at cap, even with 2x the skill, they can't disarm many of the boxes they find then I might think twice....

My perspective will be a little different, as I am doing the same on a paladin with call lightning. I find that with 202 perception and 50 or more disarming skill I can spot 100% of traps with the detect verb. As a side not, use detect and not disarm. When Ondreian's player told me that, it made opening my own boxes actually viable. Because it does not auto-attempt to disarm them, I can look at the numbers and judge if it is worth trying. I have since moved up to about 75 disarm ranks in a futile attempt to lower the RT (since I open the boxes while still hunting).

My goal is mostly to spot glyph traps to avoid deaths (before this about 95% of my deaths when hunting were from reflected 125s on boxes). I also keep an eye out for easy to mid ranged scarabs for the extra coin value. I am not sure how many traps are 125 safe and not bash safe, but I expect you could find enough trapless or safe boxes to make it well worth the effort. I would estimate trapless or simple ones I can get with my sub 1x disarm ranks account for a solid 3/4ths of the boxes I get from OTF.

You could keep a few fully charged Phase scrolls (or waveable rods??) on your person. If the box resists the spell, and isn't enruned or mithril, then it has a glyph trap.

Do you have any regrets with Paladin Menos? From what I can tell they are inferior to a fully grandmastered warrior in almost every conceivable way.

As a rogue, I currently run 2.25x pick/disarm, with 404, about +30 enhancives and one of those disarm enhancement vials. All that together and I can get practically any box I come across. It's really going to depend on where you're hunting. If OTF, then your boxes really aren't capped so you could probably run 2x disarm and get away with it. Same with warcamps. If you're hunting Scatter or SoS then you'll run into problems with the higher end boxes.

You will be able to see most of what you can't disarm. It would be better as a post cap goal rather than 2x disarm freshly capped if this is your case. (my opinion)

It's kind of hard to pin a % of boxes you will be able to disarm. 2x with my own lore as a rogue was not reliable enough for my own taste. (I'm a tight ass so I never used picking enhancive's and potions and stuff)

Sounds like you should just have me pick all your boxes for free (you can even keep the scarabs) if I can get Lockmastery reps off them!
