I actually just watched Sword Art Online after watching Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (which I highly recommend... super quick watch).
I was also recommended to watch Log Horizon, which google considers related to both.

Way ahead of you on those, I can't wait for Grimgar season 2. I really love everything about it. The art is fantastic and I think the story is leaps and bounds above SOA. It feels more real. It is definately my favorite fantasy video game anime. Actually I would consider SOA my least favorite.
One you didn't list but was pretty fun was How to pick up girls in a dungeon. I know how it sounds, but give it a chance.
I got a subscription to hulu just for their anime selection. They have a pretty decent selection.

Have you tried the other mentioned? Especially Grimgar. Not saying SOA is bad, just out of these mentioned it has the most plot holes and inconsistency imo. Taste is subjective of course.

i loved, loved, loved SAO, so i want to be talked into this show if you think it's even close to the same caliber
here are my concerns
1. as an MMO player i am insulted by the premise that any character could solo a 100 man raid. that's not how this works. that's not how any of this works.
2. SAO's first episode saw thousands of players die. mostly children. this first episode has some low stakes @$$ b***shit about professional MMO contracts, applying for a nightshift job, lowbie boss drops.
3. the ostensible protagnist treats his girlfriend/sister(?) like a servant or a child. she runs everywhere, he walks. he literally pats her on the head as he dismisses all her concerns. not a good look.
4. the traditional combined with CGI vehicles animation style really grinds my gears. you don't have to address that, that's just personal preference, but i wanted it said.

Grimgar is brutally realistic and there is no OP character as of yet.

This is dependent on the game... Consider a game like TERA, which utilizes hitboxes, real time evasion, etc... as long as there's no rage timer, it is possible for a strong/adept enough player to solo dungeons meant for large groups if they can evade getting hit (usually much easier said than done)

That one's alright. The side-story that focuses specifically on her story is garb-o though.

That's the Web Novel. As a warning, the Web novel translation was all fan done, and you'll have to be pretty forgiving. It's comprehensible, but can be a little rough around the edges.

So, back to SOA...
So... Plot question... when he enters the second MMO, I thought he made specific comments about losing his... without spoilers... special achievement skill. But her he ends up using it twice in two separate fight scenes... Was the loss of his skills just mistranslation, did I mis-remember that scene, or just a plot hole?

He's special, he has a special connection to the dive machine unlike anyone else has (think Neo in the matrix). Also, the elf princess dies in the end. tee hee.

Odds are good it's something cut in conversion from novel to anime. I don't remember exactly how it played out in ALL, but I think he as just using twonswords and not truly dual wielding.
Also remember that skills are supposed to be the system doing things for you, but SAO players often learned to act off autopilot, if you will.

The second season is wrapping up but typically with the release of Anime, the Manga tanks in chapters mainly because the creator has to take time out to work on the anime. Berserk was at like... 1 chapter every 6 months at some point?
Tate no Yuusha isn't that far into the light novel but it's been a while since I've read it.

Was the loss of his skills just mistranslation, did I mis-remember that scene, or just a plot hole?I interpreted that as meaning that his skill was no longer unique to him (special) but available to everyone as a standard combat style, and as it was available to everyone it was necessarily available to him.

I wasn't arguing against your comments, they are fairly accurate. It takes a bit more of the usual suspension of belief. I was just suggesting the other options because they are much closer to SOA and based on your comments about this show I was narrowing down what I perceived to be your preferences.

The classic is pretty boss. I really like how animation has moved to a blend of CGI and art. But when there's too much CGI it looks awkward and there's only so much art can do on its own in animation without destroying the person behind the drawing.

I don't think it is the CGI but the "camera work" that they use. I couldn't place exactly why I didn't like the overall feel of it. I saw this video and it became clear. Whoever directed the new one honestly not that great, which is a shame. This video explained it great for me.

CGI was used to cut costs. If they just converted studio Ghibli to churn out exact copies of kintaro's art it would be heaven. Get the original english cast dubs and it's probably the best anime ever.
