I think i know the answer to this but wanted to double-check:

If i have an armor ASG that does not cover the head, and I buy a helm that has HCP on it, does that mean I now have HCP head coverage?

Was always a bit confusing to me how armor accessories work in conjunction with regular armor.

Yes but it basically becomes the higher up tier, so if you put a HCP helmet on reinforced leather, you have double leathers with HCP on the head.

If you wear a HCP helm on ANY armor you will have HCP on the head (except if you already have damage padding on your head in which the HCP would be halved). In your example your head will be covered by "augmented chain" level of defense but you would have the penelties of chain hauberk (since you are in chain armor with your head covered.) and need 80 armor use ranks to negate the penalties.

Your whole body will be aug chain, with the penelties of Hauberk. It's a super confusing aspect, I hope I am explaining it well.

What do most pure bards do about their head coverage then? Without increasing their spell hindrance? It's quite the Achilles heal at the moment.

Of note, uncovered parts of an armor are NOT "naked", the uncovered parts are considered covered by the previous armor group.

Mechanically your torso and limbs are in Aug chain, your head is covered by brig.

The other option is to wear brig and the HCP helm. Maybe even find some padded greaves. adding accessories to already covered parts has no effect defensivly, they are basically a flare/padding/enhancive slot. Also I am fairly sure you would have better head protections in Brig+Helm than in Studded Leather+Helm. A small bit.

A HCP greathelm is so pedestrian, get MCP. A MCP greathelm (which applies to head, neck and eyes) with brig is some good protection and the spell hindrance is about the same as augmented chain

For best results if going for a crit padded helm route, you want to avoid your base armor having pretty much anythning from slots 3, 4, and 7 (refer to charts of clarity https://gswiki.play.net/Charts_of_clarity) to avoid having the greathelm padding halved.

That means the base armor can be fusion, voln, ithzir, enhancive, crit padded, high enchant, bunch of good choices.

The only reason why you would ever wear accessories is to get padding or flaring. You can wear accessories over full armors like hauberk or full plate (go figure) and get the full benefits of padding for those areas (arms, legs, head, eyes, neck).
