Hey!

I recently reinstated my account, having been gone for a half-dozen years or more. One of my older characters is a level 22 ranger, who was OHE/Shield when I logged him in. I had my 30 day fixskill available (now expired), and wanted to be an archer, so I moved points to where I thought I needed them. In my head, I imagined a sniper would be an easier time than an open archer - I'm prone to dying in spectacular fashion, and I figured being hidden would enhance my survivability.

Here are my stats & skills:

My problem is that things take WAY too long to die, in my opinion. I'm using a 4x Longbow, with ebladed wooden arrows, to max out my potential enchant bonus of +40 at level 22. Hiding with 608, and aiming for an eye, same level (or slightly higher 24-25ish) are taking 5-8 arrows, sometimes more if the critter is carrying a shield. Is that normal for my level?

Here is a sample log:

A squat, stone guard house stands next to the small drawbridge. A stream gurgles cheerfully under the bridge. From here the rocky path splits off in three directions, the eastern option leading directly into the settlement. You also see a reiver and some full plate.

Of the 6 shots I fired, only 1 hit where I aimed, and the critter died to losing all it's HP instead of a critical death. So what can I do to fix all of this? I assume that I need more ranks in Ambush. Should I just go Open Archer, and reallocated the Stalking and Hiding points? Or am I just too low level to reliably kill things quickly, no matter which training path I take? I've looked into picking up a sighted bow, but I simply don't have the silvers to make that happen right now.

I'm new to all this Archery stuff, and want to have a solid plan in place for the Annual Fixskill in a month.

Thanks for any advice!

fixskills/fixstats are only available through level 20 now regardless of how many days.

Low 20's are still a little rough for archers.

Aiming for eyes isn't reliable until much, much later. You're probably better off aiming for the head.

Your training is ok, though it looks like you're overtrained in spells? I'd dial that back and distribute those TPs elsewhere, maybe to try and get ambush closer to 2x.

There's a fixskill next month.

Critters don't really have all that much health at that level. You could always just stance dance in the open with(out) aiming. You can probably attack twice and likely stun them. If not, you are pretty much guaranteed to be able to be in defensive for each of their attacks.

I aimed at legs and it worked well, even without kills they typically spent a round to stand up and in the open and strength from wiz I was shooting arrows at 3 sec per so open archery wasn't an issue. Although I did also 2x armor and was in chain as soon as I was able

Yeah, ditch the eye shots until you're 40-50 probably. Just open fire.

Leg and then head or neck. As a ranger you have it easy with 610. Vine everything and then shoot it in the head.

Legs and arms are piss easy to hit at the early levels.
