It seems you fucked up, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...
So uh.. its been awhile since I tried to open boxes with my sorcerer... what are the approriate steps again?
I did 408 and thought the message I got meant all clear.. but then uh yeah.. it wasn't.
Anyone wanna enlighten my dumb ass?

If you have it... 416 it first to see if there's a trap. I sometimes do it twice to be sure. If there's no trap than just use 407. I can't tell you about 408 because I don't even bother if there's a trap.

What will gaze say if there's a trap? I've never even used it before!

It will show you something is amiss. It's a different message based on the trap. but you'll know it when you see it.

You can't use 408 on incinerator traps either. Those, rods, and the onyx scarabs, I just 125 them open, or find a picker. It's not worth the effort to me.

I always cast 416 at least three times, I am still not seeing the rare trap until the third cast. This is with 1x Perception at 88, on like-level (OTF Aquaduct) boxes.
I also do not attempt to disarm if a trap is found, I leave that to the pros.

After missing an incinerator on three casts of 416 and subsequently killing myself, I 416 4 times now on like level boxes. I'm 1x perception and I always have 402 up when I 416 (I have no idea if this actually helps, it just makes me feel better).
Some traps I've found to be pretty safe tp 408 (435 traps, poison needle traps obviously, fire goo, spore cloud, green and blue scarabs) and some I don't touch at all (black and red scarabs, rods, scales, and of course sulphur).
416 won't set off any traps at all...except for glyph traps. Rare occurrance, but hope that there isn't an Ithzir waiting to smack you when you get there.

My wizard is 2x in perception, I just have him manually disarm the boxes to check for traps, I haven't missed one so far.
When popping the boxes, do you cast 403 and then 407 or do most folks just do 407?

I would 416 the boxes anyway. I drop trapped boxes in the Silverwood bin if they do not contain a nice boxfound.

Well he's double-trained, seems to work pretty well on like level stuff, I'm thinking of picking up five ranks of so of disarm just to help spotting them. And your first disarm just checks for traps, you have to disarm again after you've spotted one to set off a trap.

There is zero chance of setting off the trap the first disarm attempt and any subsequent attempt where you haven't seen a trap.
Once seen the attempts will be to disarm it and can set off the trap in a failure or a fumble.
Depending on class and cost it might be a better idea to train disarm since its pure bonus when considering finding and disarming traps. And at the least with 10 ranks of disarm or so you may be able to disarm some newbs boxes someday.
