Hey guys, I just came back after a 6 year break and both my AIM screen names stopped working. It will not let me login or reset the password.

I left before and this never happened, so it is a new thing.

I called them and found out they disable your account if your inactive for 180 days. They claim to not be able to reactivate it once its deactivated.

I can not make the same screen screen names either because they already exist. I called twice and got told the same thing twice, cant fix it.

I am kind of not surprised since AOL/AIM is a thing of the past. I read they only survive because thousands of people forgot to stop their billing for AOL LOL.

Anyway, I know a lot of you still use AIM so I figured I would let you know. Losing 20 years of contacts for me was a real bummer. :hammer:

That's really stupid on their part.

You have to get the newest version of AOL/AIM. You can't log on with the old versions anymore. I honestly think they are closing it down slowly though.

They also disabled support for (most) third-party clients at the end of March. Pidgin at least still works.

Trillian does as well... for now. Time for everyone to migrate to Slack!

I downloaded the newest version from AIM.com, it will not log in. They disabled my account for being 180 days inactive. I am positive of it. I called twice and talked to 4 different people.

Thanks for trying to help though. I wish that would have worked. lol

It's really not that inaccurate if he calls and speaks to a supervisor.

I believe many AoL customers are older folks who don't use the Internet except for email and just never cancelled their 1990s billing. Some even still connect to the Internet via a 56K modem. To each his own.

I'm just blown away that calls about AIM were both placed and answered.

Set up mobile device forwarding. You are always signed in at that point. Now you can't be deactivated again after 180 days.

Obviously this doesn't help the OP, but it might help anyone else who could encounter this issue.

I also got a notification they were going to drop the API that Pidgin uses, so I'll probably be on AIM a lot less (never), after that happens.

Groupme is a better service. Should probably start a GS groupme, it'd be great for working out deals.

Discord offers group chat and VOIP and I believe it is free. I think Whirlin has a discord channel setup for GS.

I haven't logged into 2 of my AIM accounts in over 7 years, and I was able to just now.

They discontinued use of one of their protocols and everyone had until March 28th to get the new API they are using.

I agree that AIM is a dinosaur though, and people should start moving to other communication venues. I only keep AIM around due to GS.

I can also confirm my wife was able to log on to her old account. So I called a third time. Now I have a ticket in the system. They can't explain why my screen names were disabled for inactivity but others were not or why they can't access them in the system. I agree, lots of people started playing back in aol days so naturally they migrated to using AIM. many people still use it simply because everyone else does. Would be nice to have a better way to contact each other that isn't so old and clunky. Thank you for all that checked their old accounts for me. Wish me luck on the ticket :)

At some point, AIM itself went through a migration where they created email addresses for everyone @aim.com, where AIM had previously just been an instant messaging service. I don't remember exactly when that was, but it was probably early to mid 2000s. It's just a guess, but if you had logged out for the last time prior to that migration, and not logged in until now, you may never have been migrated to an email account, and your account may have been disabled as a result.
