What's the deal with Old vs. New when it comes to Katanas, Claids, naginatas or other weapons? It sounds like Old is better but I don't know why and I don't know how to tell if any of my gear is old style.

For claidhs, older ones have -10 AS but +10 AvD, and inspect differently. I believe they were originally modified two-handed swords before becoming their own base.

Katanas I think had different weighting to them, not sure.

They shared the same AvD and df numbers as two handed swords, which are superior to the new style claid numbers. The old style katanas were similar to falchions I think, but I'm not 100% sure.

most katanas were falchions, a few were other bases, and thus required only one type of training to use. Old style claids are more desired for several reasons, AVD being one, specializing in greatswords requires one not two slots when using old ones, thus giving you a base that also can be used for a blessable weapon
