Not one DR, Shattered, or Platinum character ever said anything to me. After a while, I realized I didn't have to ban them. Why didn't I just gag them so they could at least see the channel? So that's what I do now. Sometimes I'll look at the list of banned characters and see if they're logged in so I can change them from a ban to a gag.

Yup. Erelim is fairly well known in Gemstone and she got the Mogonis DR Ban hammer. His initial justification was that he didn't want people to be talking about the wrong games on Prime and get everyone so confused. But then it turns out its a 'character' ban and not a 'player' ban. I appreciate the psychoanalysis, but I assure you, nothing has changed. IRL is in fact, better then ever. It's simply easier to hate and attack someone then to look at something objectively. I had a runestaff altered into a fluorescent tube for my wizard, and then Godzilla came in, smashed up a school bus, and a GM made me a backpack that looked like the school bus or something.

When the GMs stopped coming around, I stopped playing, but there was still a lot of Shattered chatter (and drama) on LNet. It wasn't relevant to me, because I wasn't in that instance anymore. I created the Prime channel so there could be general chat with just the people playing the instance I was playing. Over the years, I would periodically check who was tuned and ban non-Prime characters without any pre-emptive notice. But no one ever said anything, but I suspect most people weren't aware you can see who's tuned to a channel and see who the moderators are. Anyway, call it whatever you want, but that aligns with the reason the channel exists. I think I banned them because I considered gags to be temporary. I hadn't thought about gags being indefinite. Last year it occurred to me that I didn't have to ban, so now I gag non-Prime characters with a notice as to why. That way they can still see the channel. Some people take it personally and go ballistic.

Everyone has LNet if they want it. Shattered has Shattered. DR has DRPrime. Plat has Plat. There are numerous other channels. This is tiring. People aren't "being removed," and it's not about people being a problem, unless they're being a problem. From the day I created the channel, I've intended it to have only Prime characters tuned to it, because it's general chat for Prime characters. I created it awhile after Shattered was released. I played Shattered for its first two weeks or so. The GMs were free to do anything that came to mind, and it was some of the most fun ever. I had a runestaff altered into a fluorescent tube for my wizard, and then Godzilla came in, smashed up a school bus, and a GM made me a backpack that looked like the school bus or something.

When the GMs stopped coming around, I stopped playing, but there was still a lot of Shattered chatter (and drama) on LNet. It wasn't relevant to me, because I wasn't in that instance anymore. I created the Prime channel so there could be general chat with just the people playing the instance I was playing. Over the years, I would periodically check who was tuned and ban non-Prime characters without any pre-emptive notice. But no one ever said anything, but I suspect most people weren't aware you can see who's tuned to a channel and see who the moderators are. Anyway, call it whatever you want, but that aligns with the reason the channel exists. I think I banned them because I considered gags to be temporary. I hadn't thought about gags being indefinite. Last year it occurred to me that I didn't have to ban, so now I gag non-Prime characters with a notice as to why. That way they can still see the channel. Some people take it personally and go ballistic.

Everyone has LNet if they want it. Shattered has Shattered. DR has DRPrime. Plat has Plat. There are numerous other channels. The spotlight is just always on Prime, probably because it's one of a few channels actually moderated, and it's intended for the most populous instance of GemStone. When no one was moderating, people hollered. When I came back to moderate, people hollered from both sides. I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. I've lost the respect of some people. I've made enemies from it. But I'm going to stay the course.

Well this thread suddenly got a whole lot better towards the end, so I guess I'll respond to some of this, and also the first thread of this topic, since they should have been the same thread anyway.

First, about how Mogonis moderates the Prime channel.

In short: I don't care.

I set up Lichnet so that people can create channels. Whoever creates the channel is the owner of the channel. They can do whatever moderators can do, but also add and remove moderators. They are free to decided how to moderate the channel. The rules of the channel can be fair, unfair, or nonexistent. They can be enforced consistently or randomly. You could write a script to ban a random person every 10 minues, or only allow people to chat if they show their boobs first. It doesn't matter to me.

The reason is simple. You've got options. If a sizable group of people are displeased with their moderator, they will go to another channel, creating a new one if needed, and subject themselves to a different moderator. If you're the only one displeased with the moderator, then you simply went to the wrong channel. It doesn't mean you're a terrible person (it doesn't rule it out either), but everyone is going to hate some moderators, so go find one you don't hate or go be one so people can hate you. Of course this course of action doesn't sit well with trolls, because they generally want to be where they're not wanted. I'll cry for them later when I get time.


Second, how Mogonis moderates the LNet channel.

This is a little tricky. Since LNet is my channel, I have to set the rules and make sure moderators stay within them, which I don't wanna do.

In general, the recourse for a single character sending you private messages that you don't want is to ignore them. If that spills over into multiple characters and especially fake characters, then that becomes a server issue and I'll have to get involved with a server ban (I'm not saying that's the case here; it isn't).

The tricky part comes when this happens to moderators. You can't moderate a channel if you're ignoring someone on that channel, so ignore isn't really an option until after they're banned or gagged. A new feature that allows you to ignore private chats but not channel chats would fix this little issue (which I'm considering adding), but as things are now, private chats to a moderator have to be fair game for banning from all channels the moderator moderates.

I haven't given the LNet channel moderators much direction, because as I may have stated before, I dun wanna. But here's some, I guess:

Any topic is fine except merchanting. The screen scroll from buying and selling just craps all over every other topic. Of couse, this hasn't been an issue for a long time thanks to Rozy (and some people cried bloody murder then too). Now you can have merchanting without the filth of LNet, and you can have the filth of LNet without reading a bunch stuff you don't want to buy, or you can have both, if you're into that sort of thing.

I hate trolls. Certainly the trolls enjoy what they do, and even some bystanders enjoy watching the carnage, but at the very least we'll say there's a time and a place, and it ain't the LNet channel ever. Now, that doesn't mean everything is sunshine and unicorn farts all the time. There is no such thing as a right to not be offended. Someone may tell you everything you believe in is stupid, and odds are they're right. It's when the person doesn't even themselves believe what they're saying, but rather they're just saying whatever will get a rise out of people, that they're trolling and killing all real conversation to amuse themselves at the expense of (most) everyone else. This is probably the hardest thing to moderate. Some trolls are more subtle than others, and it can be pretty difficult to tell the difference between a troll and an idiot. But hey, if you know they're trolling, get rid of them.

Bans and gags should start small and get bigger. Most people are perfectly happy staying within the lines once they know where the lines are. Other people will have... a different reaction. If you ban someone for 5 minutes, they may come back and contribute to the conversion in an acceptable manner. If you ban someone for 5 minutes and they continue to do the same thing, and you ban them for an hour, and they continue and do the same thing, you've probably discovered which type of person they are.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of rules. Just some direction for the moderators. Some things will be too offensive to this channel, and some people will be too annoying, but it's hard to write down exactly what that means.

I don't have the energy to respond to every false claim in this thread, so I'll just pick out a few.

Mogonis has been banning non-GSIV characters from the Prime channel for as long as I can remember. I think he may have even asked me if it was ok before he started, but it was too long ago to be sure.

Mogonis didn't lie to me to get me to do something. He asked me to do something, but everything I know about this situation came from Haldrik's own words or me seeing it first hand.

I didn't disconnect Haldrik's LNet... I mearly forced everyone else to ignore his chats, as punishment for not heeding his words. And I, for one, hope everyone has learned their lesson.

Well this thread suddenly got a whole lot better towards the end, so I guess I'll respond to some of this, and also the first thread of this topic, since they should have been the same thread anyway.

First, about how Mogonis moderates the Prime channel.

In short: I don't care.

I set up Lichnet so that people can create channels. Whoever creates the channel is the owner of the channel. They can do whatever moderators can do, but also add and remove moderators. They are free to decided how to moderate the channel. The rules of the channel can be fair, unfair, or nonexistent. They can be enforced consistently or randomly. You could write a script to ban a random person every 10 minues, or only allow people to chat if they show their boobs first. It doesn't matter to me.


Prime is default now, so it's really not quite that simple.



Bans and gags should start small and get bigger. Most people are perfectly happy staying within the lines once they know where the lines are. Other people will have... a different reaction. If you ban someone for 5 minutes, they may come back and contribute to the conversion in an acceptable manner. If you ban someone for 5 minutes and they continue to do the same thing, and you ban them for an hour, and they continue and do the same thing, you've probably discovered which type of person they are.


I agree with this. There is also the flip side, when moderators are being unreasonable you are going to end up in a much bigger shit storm then any initial actions. And I know you hate shit storms.



The tricky part comes when this happens to moderators. You can't moderate a channel if you're ignoring someone on that channel, so ignore isn't really an option until after they're banned or gagged.

This of course makes sense, unfortunately Mogonis certainly didn't think of that when he banned Kalros from LNET. His reaction and justification was more revenge and retaliation, and "I'm all powerful."



In general, the recourse for a single character sending you private messages that you don't want is to ignore them. If that spills over into multiple characters and especially fake characters,
