So I decided to channel my inner McGuyver based on a conversation on slack last night/this morning. Who wants a horse to ride around in game? I know I do! I know I've seen messaging that infers horses do exist in our game, yet we don't have access to them. I know DR has this coded and even has customizable options that include riding a broomstick! So, what can we do to get them in our game? Do we even want them and if so, can we make our voices heard?

Classic elf, wants to bring back ponies to kill them again. VERY SAD!

Real talk, I don't really see a point to them.

I'm not a coder but my understanding is DR doesn't have coding as arcane as GS, so new systems are different/harder to develop for GS, and you can't transplant them between games.

Nobody owns them unless it's an auction quality win. Let them be wild and you have to train accordingly to even be able to get them to trust you and eventually let you ride them. It'd be almost like a guild skill you'd have to work towards. First you feed them, then they get used to you, etc. etc. And make them rare in the wild.

Also, on Savants, Simu should just offiially announce that that project is shelved indefinitely. There are so many other areas to be worked on in game, we don't need them working on a whole new class right now.

We should all get flying mounts instead. Maybe dragons? Then we'll fly on our dragons of elanthia.

Some thoughts to ponder:

Elves, Humans, Half-Elves can get a standard horse.
Halflings get their ponies.
Gnomes get roltons.
Giantkin get 1. Nothing because they're too big and would wreck the poor steed's back or 2. Oliphants. If there is a gnome in the room, there is a chance of instant death from being crushed upon entry, subject to town justice.
Aelotoi don't get steeds. Based on their past history of enslavement, they feel to to force a beast to bear their weight as a burden would be akin to slavery. They are adamantly against this.

But what do mounts do? Would they sometimes be able to act like urchins and whisk you instantly or near-instantly to a fairly far away room? Move two rooms at a time? Attack stuff? Would they be subject to getting attacked? Would they carry bags for extra storage (but don't piss it off or it'll run away with all your nice stuff)?

Also, giantkin get effing mammoths! And we can step on gnomes.

I think dragons are the only viable way of travel. Too much stuff to climb for a horse... it just wouldn't be possible. Dragons pew pew pew! Sounds like a good idea for a game.

Horses Released!

What was thought to be the sound of thunder roared from the direction of Whistler's Pass, loud enough to be heard within the gates of Ta'Illistim. A young elven lad quickly dashed out the city's gates expecting a chance to play in the rain. It had not rained in days and he greatly enjoyed waddling about in his smallclothes playing in the mud. When he arrived along Whistler's Pass he noticed not a cloud in the sky. Yet curiously, he noticed fresh tracks through the dirt were hoove-shaped. All of a sudden a feral herd of horses plodded past him in a wild race, nearly trampling him.

Elsewhere in Elanthia very similar events were happening outside various cities and towns.

I am extremely pleased to announce that horses have been released for use within the game.

The MOUNT verb has also been updated to reflect this.

In order to obtain a horse one must first buy a length of rope, now sold in general stores all across Elanthia, and also in smaller outposts. It would also be wise to purchase carrots and apples...

Once a rope is acquired the player must then locate a herd of horses that are randomly genned in appropriate hunting areas. When a herd is found the player must then THROW ROPE AT HERD in order to try and corral a horse for capture. At this point the character's STR and DIS stat will come into affect, and also perception for aiming the rope.

Once roped, the player must then try and MOUNT the horse, which will involve a roll that includes the DEX and AGI stats. A successful mounting will allow the player to sit atop the horse. But that's not all. The player must then urge the horse to be his or her companion for life...until death. INF will greatly play a role in the character's chance to win over the horse.

Now you ask--since you probably have a horse by now--what can you do with your newfound friend?

Horses will be able for use in combat. Most weapons used while riding a horse will have their DF increased by 1.5x. There will also be a little bit higher chance for the foe to evade the attack, which can now be mitigated by the character being more dexterous. Of note, lances have become even more powerful when used from a horse and will now see a 3x increase in their DF.

Not only can horses be used in combat but they can also be used for quick travel throughout the lands. A player may now be able to tell their horse to CHARGE <town> and the horse will dash off in the general direction of the chosen town, moving as if the character were using 25 type-ahead lines to move from room to room. Be forewarned however: HORSES CAN DROWN.

Horses will also require a daily upkeep. One cannot just leave their horse standing around in the open when they decide to log off for the night. A horse must be taken to a local stable, now located in every town and outpost, and a fee must be paid for the night. But fear not, fees can be prepaid for a year at a time and there are several tiers of upkeep fees depending on how well you want your horse kept. Be forewarned: Being cheap with your horse is likely cause for a stableboy to accidentally kill it or steal it.

I'd like to thank all the helpers in the design and implementation of this. Great thought and lots of planning went into this release. I'd also love to give my immeasurable thanks to today's date, for which without it horses would still be hidden.

Before they closed AOH (a different Simu game) they had recently introduced horses. And they were stupid AS FUCK. For one thing, in AOH a playable race was Centaurs. Soooo you either have an entire race excluded or some semi-freaky pornographic stuff going on. For another thing, instead of people standing around as zombies, they were literally up on their high horses as zombies. Can you imagine? Basically take all the "pets" people currently have (kittens, ranger companions, wizard familiars, spirit servants, etc) and hey let's RAMP THAT SHIT UP. In AOH the population at the end was like 7 or something so okay, but in GS it would be super annoying. If you want to live out your horse fantasies, here you go. http://www.brony.com/

Make discs look like horses. Allow some verbs for sitting on, a couple ambient zests, make it rare so people feel superior, done. Next song!

I think Simutronics should take Tillmen's Lich ;go2 script and turn it into a horse/steed riding script. That way it looks more appealing and entertaining when traveling. You can mount a horse/steed. Then when traveling, you go faster than you would just walking of course (non Lich-wise). And in Room Description it could read... _Nihrvanah, Allereli, Dalnirath who is sitting, Loralaii, Richaard mounted on a brown steed, and Nyatherra._ I would so buy this type of thing with Simucoins.

That is what started it in Slack. To me, it makes for more RP as well. I was actually being serious in the slack comment. Then it turned comical like it is here now. It's not a bad thing as I had a good laugh on Slack and in this topic. And the idea was just an opinion I had. Running from town to town is fine. But it brings in more entertainment and better medieval realistic traveling. I'll just keep dreaming. :)

I'd like them for the roleplaying, but when you consider how many hunting grounds require steep climbs or going into caves or castles or portals to other dimensions, it's hard to imagine them having a ton of real function. They'd just be fluff.

The mount system in other MUDs makes sense because in those games, you have movement points as well as health and mana. Using mounts takes less movement points so that you don't have to camp/rest as often.

For only 5,000,000 Simucoins you can turn your horse into a unicorn or pegasus! And another 100,000 Simucoins you can make them gay!

Visit the Simucoin store today!

Unicorns would be Ronan alters, so obviously it would have to cost 10 mil simucoins.

I know DR has this...

And they gave up on horses years ago in DR. Yes, you can ride a horse, but there's no group kept, you can do very few things on the horse, and it's a huge pain to get across natural borders and stuff. People just don't use them.

Ships now, they use those a lot more in DR. What few ships there are...
