View Full Version : Actual Hacking

Hi All,
There is some actual hacking that is occuring via LNET and I'm trying to bring some exposure to it. It's currently happening in Dragonrealms but can easily cross over to Gemstone. It basically causes a critical error in the front-end which crashes the client. I informed Tillmen and he pushed a fix but the hacker is still circumventing. At this point Simutronics should get involved and ban all the characters involved. It's getting ridiculous.
Log tonight.

[01:32] [PrivateTo]-DR:Gallifreius: "what about lich logs? thats how i got the logs this time"
[01:32] [Private]-DR:Gallifreius: "it parses the data, overflows the register, and it's all ogre from there."

There's a good chance all of these characters are involved as the hacker is running 10-15 accounts. Maybe more.
[Knife Clan, Triage]
Low groans rising from the injured fill the cramped alcove as wounded hunters and warriors receive aid. Mattresses line the walls, about half occupied by recovering patients. The floor is almost entirely covered by a dark red stain, paying testament to the enthusiasm of the field surgeons. An ominous bone saw leans against the wall, obviously a favorite method of treatment.
You also see a glass reservoir and the surgeon Dokt.
Also here: Bastile, Oakbrother Raleembis who is lying down, Black Widow Giulietta, Hugglebug, Lorlia, Croatoa, Skrattik, Father Gratio, Sombasys and Shayanah who is lying down.
Obvious exits: east.

So... you get attacked by a player and hack them via LNET to crash their client. And you somehow think hacking is OKAY or justifiable? You need serious help.

You walk in and attack me, unprovoked, causing me to be in an area where I can no longer train because I'm paralyzed, and cannot get out of because I'm paralyzed. I confront you for attacking people, and you blame me for hacking you. I tell you I'm not hacking you, and you curse at me. Next, you quote me out of context, trying to make a point.

Love how DR shit bleeds into everything. DR is a PvP game, every facet of that game is made so you can lord it over people or abuse them if you have enough ranks or circles. It makes PC toxicity look extremely civil. Dumbshit DragonRealms GMs are still blind to this and are all scratching their heads, "Duhhhh why my game so fucked up?"

The chat talks about abusing the exploit via the gweth (that is the DR equivalent of the amunet)
It also mentions profanity (tillmen's console based front end) and glitch (which I'm not familiar with but i assume is another alternate frontend DR people have) are not affected, which means the problem lies in stormfront / the game engine itself not having proper input validation and/or overflow control.
As described, it is NOT a lich / third party issue. (although lich may make it easier for the attacker)

Assuming the person in the log is telling the truth, then it's a buffer overflow in Stormfront, which makes it nominally a Stormfront issue.
But if Simu servers refuse to send any lines over the expected buffer length, then it's only an issue if you get MITM'd. Which doesn't make it a non-issue, but does make it a smaller issue.
If you're actively choosing to MITM yourself by running Lich, then that's on you more than it's on Simutronics. We all run Lich at our own risk.
Until they have an active gweth/amunet exploit, then it's just someone talking big. Gemstone definitely enforces a message length, and I assume DR does as well.
edit: Of course, just because the exploit requires Lich as a vector for now doesn't mean Simu's not going to get involved. I doubt they want that kind of customer.

sure, that was assuming what they said was correct.
while it's not as if lich has robust security QA testing, i'm more inclined to believe sf/wizard which haven't been updated in eons are the culprit :D

It's definitely related to the front ends not having certain protections. Lich is just the delivery vehicle that the person(s) is currently using. It's entirely possible that there are other methods of delivery, such as whispers, private thoughts via amulet, gweth, etc. Right now it's just the ability to crash the client, but what happens when this user pushes the envelope to develop better techniques. What happens when they can make the attack invisible. What happens when they start taking control of your system or keylogging your passwords?
I don't want to go sky is falling but imagine a sophisticated hacker who would get your information and siphon off 1M here or there for a few months. Take a couple items out of your vault that you might not miss for 6 months. It would be impossible to put the puzzle pieces together.
In Dragonrealms there's also an ongoing incident with a player, which is likely the same person creating the hacking, who has for months, been continuously creating new characters with obscene names. Apparently the person has been logging in through Tor networks to avoid IP ban / detection. Simutronics had to disable Tor network logins and I don't believe this has stopped the abuse.
Hacking forces development time into resources to combat these types of abuses, makes systems less efficient, and is a general leech on the operations. Anyone who encourages or is dismissive of the type of impact this can have on a game, should really rethink their stance.
I can guarantee Simutronics would rather step in now when people are inconvenienced instead of trying to track down stolen items, silvers, etc. Just look at all the work that Wyrom had to go through for stolen credit cards, and that was far more visible. Or at the very least, they can start gathering evidence to try and track these players to make it easier to drop the ban-hammer. Simu may not have a lot of power to stop the hacking but figuring out a hackers main character and banning that character sure does stifle the players motivation to stick around.

the conversation from the initial post has been edited, which shifts the tone dramatically
the "attack" is a simple overflow via an extended private lnet message which causes stormfront to crash
only users of stormfront that are running lnet are affected
GS players seem to have always been immune
at present, changes to lnet make this kind of thing unviable (lnet will deny service when confronted with spam by issuing an escalating timeout duration in the face of repeated attempts)
all discussions of gweth theory or payloads were derived from tall tales and a fear of providing actionable information to the less than amicable amongst us

the Logical progression that begins with sending Overlong messages through Lnet and ends with the Wholesale destruction of the very societal constructs we rely Upon is as demonstrable as it is Terrifying

Also just blatantly false. I was hit by a minimum of 3 attacks in a 30 second window. You clearly bypassed the LNET timeout window. Or did you actually use 3 different characters all on different proxies. Try hard much?
Sounds like you are going to end up in federal prison. Dangerous enough to play with weapons, not smart enough to get away with it.

Or when you're at a bar, and you notice they have a Router/Wifi titled Linksys, so you access the router with the default admin passwords, and then enable parental controls to block their wired and wireless connection at the same moment you go to clear out your tab with a credit card.
Remind me never to grab drinks with you. :scared:

Why is this general Gemstone? Sounds like it should be Lich/Scripting Discussions, or General Dragonrealms. Or General Shit I don't care about if it doesn't have to do with a GS vulnerability.
And so it begins..............................

Is it really hacking if they can't access your data? Sure, it's annoying, but I don't really think of DDoS as hacking, not that I'm the Wikipedia of hacking or anything. Buffer overflow seems to be in the same category, it shuts you down, but it doesn't give anyone access to your data in this case. Or am I missing something?

Just because your data isn't accessed doesn't mean it isn't a hack, especially since a buffer overload is being used.

Seems to me this whole issue could be resolved by implementing a governor on LNet messaging. Thought there already was one? Guess not.

Moral of the story: don't be a hacker, or associate with hackers. That shit stopped being cool about the same time the movie was released. LAME

Definitely Inspire.
Goodwin's Law of the PC.
As the number of posts in a thread grows the probability someone accuses someone of being Inspire approaches 1.
