<<The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 8.9.
The Indonesian quake struck just three days after an 8.1 quake struck the ocean floor between Australia and Antarctica,
Quakes reaching a magnitude 8 are very rare..
A quake registering magnitude 8 rocked Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Sept. 25, 2003...
An 8.4 magnitude tremor that stuck off the coast of Peru on June 23, 2001, killed 74.>>
That's considered rare?

Global warming has more to do with the distance between the moon and earth increasing annually, thus increasing the 23 degree wobble, than it has to do with environmental pollution.

solution: Nuke the moon.
They just said 11,000 dead at least. That is not a small number.
Artha

Reuters is saying more than 12,300.

This distance is decreasing annually, actually. As with most orbiting objects, the moon is in a decaying orbit, last year moving a few hundred meters closer. But yes, the closer the moon gets, the more wobble the earth has, and this is the root cause of much of the global warming we fear.

Ah, I see you are not a fan of the SE Asiatic population. Hate is such a beautiful thing, in its own way. Quick! Someone mod it out!

Actually, each one of the dead was by far a better specimen of human being than the disgusting excuse for a person that goes here by the name of Ben.
I wouldnt piss on him if he was on fire

I have always thought "to each his own" and never really got into the argument about Ben's racism. After that "people?" comment, I think he should stfu and leave. Thanks.
When do we get that person blocker on here?
Anyway, the last I heard the death toll was 23,700. That would be my entire county.

I read that as "my entire country," looked over to the sidebar, and wondered when Canada shrunk so much.

Good news, MissX! :)
That is good news, Miss X :)
Also, I just read something about how, in short, the Earth's rotation was fucked up by this quake, due to the fact that it had the striking force of 100 million atomic bombs..?
Any geophysicists care to elaborate on this?

I don't know, her cell phone isn't active over there so I haven't been able to call her, and she hasn't gotten back to my last e-mail.
Was Indonesia hit in only that one island area? Or was it spread out?

100 million A-bombs? I don't think there would be any planet left at all if the number were that high.

I heard it hit a total of maybe five or six different countries, the only ones that come to mind are Sri Lanka and Indonesia, though.

One million, my bad...

Somalia got hit and it killed 100 people. Somalia was 3000 miles from the epicenter. I'm thinking it hit lots of countries; the question is just how badly.

Here's a map of the area. Damn.. look at how far it travelled.
Death toll up to 44,000 right now. I imagine once this is said and done, it will be around 100,000.
:(
Edited to add: They said an island moved 100 feet from where it was prior to the quake. Esh.

GALLE, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - The sea and wreckage of coastal towns all around the Indian Ocean yielded up tens of thousands of bodies on Tuesday, pushing the toll from Sunday's tsunami past 50,000. From everything I have seen and heard, Jakarta wasn't hit by this, Edaarin. The damage (in the Indonesian islands)appears to be confined to the island of Sumatra, primarily.

UP to 60k+ now in over a dozen countries. Geeze.
And the mind just boggles about how bad it can and most likely will get with starvation, lack of clean drinking water, no power, upcoming disease...
Raven
I hear disgusting accounts of how, now, unfound bodies in the high hundreds are now being washed upon shore.
The death toll will probably exceed 100,000.

This was provided by Maia on another board...
The world is stepping up efforts to aid millions of survivors of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that has killed at least 135,000 people. Britain has boosted its pledge from $30 million to $95 million, and the World Bank added another $250 million.
