Have a friend new to the game who is dead set on a bastard sword for his THW palli. Was wondering what a perfect would go for. Preferably 7x, but I've got a wizard if I have to I can enchant it for him.

PS Are there any strong disadvantages to the bastard sword? From what I can see if you're looking for damage without any kind of weighting(he's using a sanc katana right now) bastard sword is the way to go?(he wants the consecration flares)

Thanks in advance

I find that for any desirable base, the cost of a 7x perfect is in the 10-15 million silver range.

Bastard swords are good weapons in terms of damage factor per second of base RT. While not exactly a disadvantage, they do lose that one advantage if you play a race with the dex/agility to bring slower weapons down to the minimum 5 second RT or 6 seconds ambush RT.

I strongly recommend against swinging any weapon that will require a longer than a 5 second base swing. Hard RT = death, especially at higher levels. Also, creature designs appear to be based around 5 second player RT, though this statement is largely based on anecdote.

Once you incorporate that concept into character design, the bastard sword is inferior to nearly every other two handed weapon of equal or greater base RT. If your friend is wedded to the RP and image of a two-handed blade, a flamberge would be right up his alley; it is superior to the bastard sword in nearly every area except for flesh and soft leather AvD, where such differences are largely inconsequential.

First I say, swing what your character sees themselves swinging. Second, as both Menos and BLZrizz point out, there are two things to think about; damage and RT. Are there two handed weapons that hit harder? Yes. But, and this is a HUGE but, when you swing a slower weapon and pick up that third box and it does not fit into the disk, you either go back and unload, leave it, or live with the RT and in my opinion that last is tantamount to death. My paladin can easily swing a lance in 5 seconds but he still uses a naginata for that reason, maybe not a perfect analogy since a naginata hits pretty hard for a pole but it makes my point.

Maul is the way to go, forget this silly notion of pointed weapons.

Thanks for the info everyone. It looks like he's going to go Two-hander(He really doesn't want to swing a hammer lol, RP wise). Now I just have to find him one!
