View Full Version : In search of the perfect pet...

I'm sick of being the only living thing in my home, so I am going to get a pet. I'm looking for suggestions on what to get.

I live in a 1000 square foot condo and have no yard of my own (though we have "community space"). I'm out of town one or two weekends a month, but I could take the pet with me most times.

I'm really leaning toward getting a small dog, but I don't want one that's yippy.

Suggestions (dog breed or otherwise)?

Miniature Schnauzer, they do not shed, they are small cute as hell and regardless of what some say they are not yappy. I own 3 of them and the only time they bark is when someone knocks on my door.

Every small dog ever is yappy.

I second that. I had one growing up and it wasn't yippy like most of the smaller dogs are. They have some energy - but calm down eventually.

Personally I'd never buy a small dog again. Once you've seen a 140 pound Newfoundland laying at the top of the stairs with it's paws hanging off the top step - you can't go back.

I  big dogs. I had black labs (yes, I know, not as big as yours) growing up, and I miss them terribly. I just don't think it is fair to keep a dog that size in a home the size of mine, especially when I don't have a yard to speak of.

Care to expand on this, or perhaps offer a suggestion of your own?

If your into large dogs but dont have much time adopt a greyhound. I believe them to be the most gentle and quiet dogs. Also low maintenance with the barely there coat. They wont need a groomer as often as the other mutts. They are quick to learn commands and are attentive to human needs as well. I'm in the process of adopting one as soon as my living arrangements get stable. They are the dogs for cat people. :)

Mini Dobermans

Adorable!

I have and used to breed full collies (blue merles).

I love my big hairy dogs!

But my bro in law has a mini dober and loves him. He is very good and little hair

I highly recommend the green tree iguana or veiled chameleon.

OR a cocker spaniel.

Yes, I think the barking hobbit is a super pet idea. Where can I get one in game?

Cocker spaniels are way too skittish. I love miniature dachsunds for some reason. Mini yorkies are good. Greyhound is nice, but not fair to keep them in a small condo. They need tons of exercise. All the schnauzers I've been around have been nice and well behaved as well.

I really like miniature dachsunds, I used to like mini yorkies when I was young, but I've heard they are extremely tempramental.

Personally I can't wait till George and I move into a bigger place, he's promised to let me have a puppy then. I want a great dane. :) :) :)

As for Jihna, Eiderfleur is known to roam the wilds of Ta'Illistim with all the other wild creatures.

Wezas, do you have any pictures of your newfie?

Dogs get awfully lonely when left by themselves for long periods of time. They really need people around them, and to be taken out for walks...stuff like that. If you can take the little critter with you when you travel, a dog is great. If you can't, you're better off with a cat, or some other animal that doesn't require so much personal attention. :)

No good ones recently. Here's one from last winter when she was just over a year old. And yes, that's a full-sized snow shovel.

And another, showing how much she enjoys just laying outside on top of (and underneath) the snow:

If I can get my camera & PC to talk nicely to each other tonight - I'll snap off a more recent picture of her.

I'd suggest going to the pound and finding a small to medium sized mixed breed.

You'll save hundreds of dollars, end up with a pet that isn't prone to health problems due to generations of inbreeding, and most likely save a life.

I have to say miniature dachsund too. Mine was the best dog I ever had. Smart, funny, and loved people to death.

Newfoundlands are so beautiful. Wezas, that snapshot of your dog covered with snow is lovely.
